Chapter 9 - The Source

Changing the subject Henri put a hand on Nezani’s shoulder and laid her flat so that her entire body was touching the grass.

“First lesson, connect to your roots” Henri said softly.

“Start by just taking some deep breaths, you noticed earlier the vibrations under you when you touched the grass. Bring your awareness back to that vibration and back to the beat of the vibration. Letting your whole body feel that vibration is step one. Let me know when you feel it over your entire body” Henri directed staring down lovingly at Nezani.

Hmm should be easy enough, I felt this vibration earlier.

Nezani dug her hands back into the grass feeling the vibrations immediately. She tried to expand the senses in the rest of her body to feel the vibrations underneath her but every time she began to, there seemed to be a competing energy out of rhythm that would disrupt her.

“Henri, I feel the energy from the ground with my hands, but when I try to feel it in other places in my body a different energy comes forward and its out of sync with what I feel in my hands.”

“Gooood” Henri said.

Confused Nezani opened one of her eyes to ask Henri for clarity.

“Let me explain, the competing energy you feel is the mana that is naturally occurring within your body and soul. It is out of sync with the vibrations of the mana here. In order to connect to the source, you need to sync up the rhythm of your energy to that of the source.”

“The way I remember doing this was first tuning into the rhythm of the flow of energy in my body, and then slowly synching up each of my limbs and then my center to the mana roots. As you get better at doing this you’ll be able to do so without even thinking. Give it a go” said Henri.

Following Henri’s instructions, Nezani focused her attention on herself trying to find the pulse of her mana within herself.

Zim zi zim zi zim zi zim zi zim

She began to feel her pulse at the center of her chest. She took a moment to get used to this feeling before attempting to feel it throughout the rest of her body. Starting at her finger tips she laid both her hands on her chest. Nezani felt the pulse vibrate through her chest and into her fingertips.

Zi zim zi zim zi zim zi zim zi

“Good, keep going.” Henri whispered.

Slowly the pulse moved through her fingers to her hands, from her hands to her arms, to the center of her abdomen, down through her pelvis, into her thighs, and eventually ending in her feet.

Filling her entire body with the rhythm of her internal mana her body began to feel like it was suspended in air and light as a feather.

“That’s it! Now try to feel the pulse of the mana roots below you and slowly concentrate on matching your internal pulse to match. And when I say slow, I mean slow. It could take a while to sync your entire body.”

Taking her guides words to heart Nezani went slow, falling asleep.

Henri watched closely as Nezani slept. Her chest moving up and down to her own rhythm, hands still grasping the blades of grass around her.

In her slumber Nezani could visualize in her minds eye two golden pulsing orbs, flashing in differing rhythms.

She noticed that one of the orbs was following the beat of her breathe. She slowed her breathing and then quickened it to see if the orb would follow her lead. It did.

If I could just control my breathing to match the other orb.

She began to control her breathes to the pulse of the other orb. The two orbs slowly started to move toward one another as they began to sync in rhythm.

Just a little closer.

As the two orbs began eclipse Nezani felt something warm in the center of her chest, the warmth grew all over her body until her entire body was getting hot, reallyyy hot.

Now in her minds eye there was only one orb and it was brighter and larger than the two that were previously there. Her veins began to feel like they were on fire traveling up through her feet all the way to the top of her head and ending behind her eyes. Her eyes shot open in agony.

“Ahh! My whole body is on fire!”

“Breathe, breathe! Control your breathing! You’ve connected to the source and it’s going to take a little bit of time for your body to get used to the feeling of the raw mana in your veins” Henri said.

Clutching her chest Nezani focused on the huge golden orb pulsating in her minds eye. Taking deep breathes, the sizzling in her body began to fade slightly. The feeling was still hot but she was getting used to the feeling of it. Beads of sweat dripped off her forehead onto the grass below.

“I need something to drink, I’m so hot” She walked toward the small bowl of water in the center of the training space. She knelt over the bowl scooping water into her hands to bring it to her mouth for a drink.

Looking into her hands Nezani saw her reflection. Her eyes were glowing a bright golden glow, and she could see the glow of the energy running beneath her skin etching beautiful golden paths into her brown skin.

Woah

She dropped the water back into the bowl and spun around to get Henri’s attention.

“You did it Aní!” she said smiling.

“You’ve connected to the source.”

Aní I like that, if I can shorten her name, I guess she can shorten mine.

“Will I glow like this forever?” Nezani questioned examining the golden glow tracing her arms and hands.

“No, the more you connect, your body will build a tolerance for the heat of the mana and and the layers of your skin will thicken, and the mana will no longer be visible. Your eyes however will always glow while you are harnessing the source.” Henri said gesturing towards her head.

Bringing her fingers to her eyes, Nezani felt the heat emanating from her eyes.

Kind of cool, also kind of scary.

It was the first time she was scared about what be happening to her, what she might be capable of, who she might become.

Reading Nezani’s expression Henri spoke “Don’t worry, the source wouldn’t have let you tap into it if it sensed that you would do harm. Plus, if by some chance you do go rouge, there are ancient forces that will take care of you”

The mention of this ancient task force sent chills down Nezani’s spine. Deciding to change the subject she asked “Okay what now? I’ve connected to the source where do we go from here? Where do I learn to fight”.

“Easy, you will learn your defensive techniques with your next trainer. For now we need to focus on your capability for holding mana in your body and keeping it stable and calm. Once you master that, your options for defense are endless. We’ve done enough for today, lets start again tomorrow. Walk back to your room, take a cold shower, grab some dinner and meet me back here tomorrow when the sun is eye level in the sky.”

And with that Henri returned to the base of her tree and placed her hand on the tree bark. Her soul shooting up the trunk of the tree into the branches leaving spirit standing there.

Let’s walk home, you need to rest.

With that Nezani strolled back up the brick path into the hotel, and into her room. After following Henri’s advice Nezani sat staring into space wondering what the next day would hold.
