After Bill overcame the initial surprise of discovering that he was not a human anymore, mainly with comfort from Sam and having to forcibly find Sam too. All he had to go off of was the engine he presumably died in and a somewhat intact railyard with scattered unloaded freight cars. The odd thing was the way to board or open the cars seemed oddly tailored to his new biology. After searching the entire yard for Sam while Sam told him if he was getting closer or farther, while saying something about distance and how loud he could hear Bill. It was only when he returned to The Daylight Sam only said he was getting closer. Bill didn’t want to say it but he suspected the locomotive to be Sam.
As the day transitioned onto night the temperature rapidly plummeted, which resulted in Bill lighting up the firebox to keep himself warm. This made the rest of the Locomotive to fire up, as gauges rose and fell, valves seemed to turn as if it were magic, making optimal conditions for steam. “Ayo Sam, would you know why the Daylight suddenly started on it’s own engine after I lit the firebox?”, Bill asked quizzically, suspecting Sam to be the Daylight.
“Well you see, after you lit the firebox- wait, no it’s impossible.”, Sam responded, beginning to sound desperate.
“Why not test the idea Sam? Like if you think of turning on the headlight of the locomotive?”, Bill suggested a make or break moment. Soon enough the light turned on, and for the first time Sam announced that he could see. After Sam had his realization Bill started, “So how is it to be the Daylight?”
“Unexpected, and not a welcome truth, but at least I can see.”, Sam said with a monotone, it was obvious he wasn't all there.

“Well you're gonna have to deal with it if we are to live, as you remember I got turned into a lizard Mr. Train.”
“Oh fuck off Bill, at least you are still technically alive.”
“Well how do you say we get through the night, then see if we can get you moving, maybe hook some of the cars from the yard up?”
“Fine, I'll try to work on it while you are sleeping, have a good night Bill.”
“You too Sam.”

The sun was up, the firebox was still burning, and Sam was practicing how to move. Earlier he had found out he could see through any light on the train, namely the headlight, cabin light, and rear light. Sam had recently figured out how to move, apparently all he had to do was to “push” himself forward and he went forward. The problem was that he was limited to the short stretch of track he was on, for the point up ahead needed to be flipped or else derailment loomed.
“Ayo Sam, you up? Cause I got an itching to get outta this yard.”
“I have been up the whole night Bill, and I have figured out how to move, I just need you to switch some points.”
“Well better done than said, I am thinking we should bring some of the cars in this yard, just in case we need to move things around.”
In response to that Sam just grumbled. The fire box was still burning and boiler pressure was high, so Sam and Bill just “walked” side by side throughout the yard. Bill was switching points and guiding Sam to picking up four 50 foot box cars and two 25 foot flatbed cars. (Locomotive, Flatbeds, Boxcars) Finally, Bill led Sam to the yard exit, got in the Daylight’s cabin, leaving the two to leave the yard and begin their journey.
