A0 - Chapter 1
After calming down his heartbeat and rubbing his forehead, Kyle finally answered the message ignoring the stifled giggle the feminine voice produced after hearing him squeal and bang his head on the top of the capsule.
“Yes please”.
-The scan on your iris and your body (not to mention your girly scream) have determined that you are an unregistered user. Do you wish to create a new account?-
Please be an extremely smart AI and not a GM, though Kyle uselessly. After spending two hours in the capsule his mind wandered about his future in the new world. The voice had just startled him. The fact that the AI/GM noticed him screaming like a girl and banging his head on the top of the capsule was just embarrassing.
“Are you really an AI? Oh, and yes, I would like to create a new account, and it wasn't a girly scream!”.
-I am indeed an AI and I am in charge of welcoming new players to Versailles, even the ones that squeal when I greet them. Please, select the name of your avatar-
What the hell? That is one advanced AI. And why does it make me feel like i'm back in highschool? Best ignore it for now.

“Woah”. Kyle was speechless. They were all good, amazingly so. In fact, finding the right combination of races would probably yield absurd bonuses, but the penalties were downright contradicting to the goal of Royal Road to ‘become the emperor’. Kyle read all of them over and over again and it was the last warning that made him hesitate.
“So scary, is this a BDSM only race?”. He couldn’t help but mutter, then an idea came to him.
“Hey, do you happen to know how many classes possess the ability to tame monsters?”
-...-
“...”
-Please wait while i contact the administrators-
Hey, what's with the awkward pause. Though Kayle as he went through the heritage descriptions once again.
Dark Elf-Black Dragon and Dwarf-Bronze Dragon are the only compatible races. I can think of that probably gain more than they lose from the mix. human is probably the safest bet.
-Sorry for the wait- Said the voice right next to his ear, making him jump once again. Thankfully he managed to hold the squeal that almost came out.
“Now you’re doing it on purpose, aren't you?”. He accused the empty space, embarrassed of letting AI get a reaction out of him.
-Not my fault, you just make it easy, and you have such delightful reactions too- She chuckled, the bloody AI actually chuckled.
-Anyhow, I have been allowed to inform you that the ability to tame monsters is restricted to secret and hidden classes only. You can play without worrying that a cute girl will enslave you to follow her around like a cute puppy.-
“That's not what I was worried about! And aren't you and AI? What´s with the crappy treatment?”
-You are the first player I've attended, I was bored before you came and you are fun to mess with. Now, have you decided which race you wish to be?-
“Half Human and Half Red Dragon”. The AI managed to annoy and embarrass Kyle to the point that he decided to forgot the race analysis and go with the safe bet.
-Humf, where is your sense of adventure? Well, you are almost set. Anything else I can help you with? It is my utmost pleasure, trust me-
Scary, how can the game designers make this monster the first thing one encounters on Royal Road?
“Nope, i’m good. skip everything and let me get to the game already.”
-Delightful, bye bye Kalthier, hehehe-
A sinister laugh followed Kalthier as his vision went dark. It was only at this point that he remembered two very important aspects the AI forced him to skip over. He didn't get a chance to alter his appearance or chose where to start, or to be more precise, he was tricked by the evil AI to pass them.

Kalthier opened his eyes as soon as he heard bells ringing. Noticing and ignoring the system messages that popped out, he angrily cried out.
“System contact support”
-Hello?-
“Your bloody AI didn't give me a chance to alter my appearance, or choose my starting city!”
-Please wait for verification-
Not good, they’ll see I passed on the chance to do both.
Spotting a fountain while he waited, Kalthier went to see if he could at least see his reflection. All hope and excitement regarding vanishing at what he saw.
No way
What the reflection showed him was indeed his face, and yet... His eyes, his draconic menacing-blood-red--slitted eyes were big, round and so innocent looking it hurt him to see them. Somehow the AI had managed to alter his appearance, even when he passed his chance at doing it himself. Other changes, included the fact that, despite the low chance, he’d acquired both horns and a tail, only his horns, the majestic horns of a dragon barely extended an inch over his forehead. His tail was smooth, red, thin and long and it ended at its end was a spike make from the same material as his horns, and it looked just as dangerous. His fangs appeared to have elongated, but once again they seemed to convey playfulness, not danger.
Cute. The thought sent rage coursing through him.

He was in the middle of a huge plaza. The ground was paved with smooth stones of random shapes that somehow managed to fit each other. But by far, the most impressive sight was right in front of him. Taking up half the horizon was a church, more of a cathedral really. It appeared to have been carved from a single piece of white marble. A frightening monument of masonry and sculpture. A white cathedral of humongous proportions carved to such an incredible detail that even from a distance he could see beads of sweat on the sculptures adorning it. Surely built using vast amounts of magic and the greatest artists in the continent. It was beautiful enough for Kalthier to forget about his dreadful appearance for a while.
You have seen Regus’ Cathedral of LightBuilt centuries ago, this is the only church in Versailles dedicated to all the goods of light. This cathedral was built in a joint effort by uniting the resources from all the churches.
The names of both the sculptor and architect have long ago faded from memory. this cathedral is their only legacy.

For ten minutes Kalthier just sat on the fountain absorbing in the wonderful sight in front of him. He also noticed different types of people going about their business. They all managed to fit perfectly in the medieval setting marking them as NPC’s to Kalthier. He also noticed the covert looks they gave him, the ranged from curious to suspicious.
It was as he was reading this messages that he came upon a shocking realization. Somehow he could feel his tail. It was swinging back and forth in the water behind him, sending small ripples across the fountain and cooling him down, helping him relax. After spending ten minutes of intense concentration he managed to move it according to his will. He also got a system message.
*Ting*
You have gained a new stat: Concentration.
Being able to move his tail and the way it felt to move it, not to mention the system notice he got after so little effort, lifted his spirits. It also managed to make him a little bit curious and intrigued about his race, despite his appearance. That, added to the astounding beauty this world seemed to be filled with, was enough for him to recover some of his resolve. After all, this was a new world, never again would he let himself be shackled in hopelessness and despair.
“Show info Concentration”
Concentration: StatAbility to keep focused when performing a task
For magic users, concentration can prevent them from failing to cast a spell after being interrupted. Spellcasting assistance basically, possibly an increase in Magic Attack as well.
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
For non spell casters this could have a similar effect for skills, allowing the skill to go through should it be interrupted, possibly increasing attack as well.
Not long after he recovered his enthusiasm he started to see multiple flashes of white appear around the plaza. Now the first system messages he got made sense. Given that he skipped half the character creation process, he somehow managed to be the first player to log in whose starting city was Regus. And, given the difference between game time and reality time, close to half an hour passed by after he logged in before other players started to join.
Whoa, asides from the way they are acting right now they look just like the NPC´s. I truly can't tell the difference. Finally deciding, despite his monstrous appearance, to at least give his avatar a try, Kalthier left the plaza in a random direction, hoping to avoid unwanted attention to his appearance by the other players. The system warning about tamers hunting his steps was making him nervous.
After walking around the city for a couple of hours, Kalthier noticed that two bars at the edge of his vision steadily decreased. The longer he walked without stopping for a short rest, the faster his stamina seemed to deplete. And, despite not knowing what it meant, soon Kalthier decided to associate the satiety bar to his rising hunger. Remembering the list of commands he investigated during his research he whispered.
“Inventory”
A translucent window appeared in front of him. It gave details during his current equipment, consisting of a set of very simple clothes and a knapsack, which contained ten pieces of rye-bread and an empty canteen. He searched around his knapsack, taking out what soon proved to be to be the hardest piece of bread in existence. A more inquisitive search probed all his rye-bread to be in such condition. Slowly, and with great trepidation, he slowly took a bite out of it.
“Urgh...” Spiting the mouthful with with a grimace he ran as fast as he could towards the closest water fountain, taking both his stamina and satiety levels dangerously low. As soon as he was within reach of the fountain, Kalthier dunked his head inside, drinking as heavily as he could in order to remove the aftertaste of such a hellish flavor and restore his stamina and satiety levels.

Once again ignoring the system messages, Kalthier realized his good mood had been broken by the hell-bread.
“Sadists, the bloody developers of this game are sadists” Not even in his college years, eating burnt ramen a couple of days old had he ever tasted something so vile, repugnant and plain ass evil.
“Do they seriously give this hell-bread to every new player? Or is it just mine, probably some sort of sick joke by that evil AI.”
Even if the AI from his capsule seemed to hate him for some unknown random reason, changing his bread into a hellish concoction went too far. But just as he was about to call the system admin, a terrible thought came to him. What if all the players get hell-bread instead of normal bread? What if it is not a mistake but a feature designed by those maniacs? In order to test his theory, Kalthier decided to compare his bread with the one carried by another player. Looking up from the fountain he saw a girl who was busy filling a canteen across. Since appeared to be wearing the same beginner clothes as he was, he decided she was probably a player and slowly approached her.
“Excuse me, miss? Are you by any chance a player?”
The girl looked up to see him and froze, after spending an unusual amount of time staring at him with wide eyes she finally seemed to remember his question.
“Err, yes, yes I just started, I'm Myla, Hi”.
Having completely forgotten his current appearance due to his traumatic experience with the hell-bread, Kalthier simply marked the girl as shy.
“Hello, I was wondering if you happened to get some bread at the start of the game, and if you, by any chance would mind trading some with me?”
The girl looked surprised for a moment. After giving an almost silent, high pitched squeal, she answered in a soft, kind voice, the kind you would use to approach a wounded animal.
“Well, yes, you see, everyone gets ten pieces of rye-bread along with an empty canteen. And, seeing as though I plan to learn the cooking skill soon, you can have one of mine, here”. Myla handed Kalthier a lump of rock that upon further inspection, appeared to be another piece of hell-bread.
Mentally preparing himself after giving her a mumbled “Thank you” Kalthier slowly nibbled at the hell-bread. Instantly his stomach revolted, his tail froze pointing skyward and he ended up with his head into the fountain once more.
So, on the bright side, the whole there is an evil AI that hates my guts theory is busted. On the other hand, it appears that the whole development team of Unicorn Corp is evil.
Completely ignoring the kind girl who was currently giving him an amused, perplexed look. Kalthier started mumbling his ramblings to himself.
“There is no way I'm ever eating something like that again”.
Kalthier then took all his remaining bread and threw it at his feet. He filled his canteen with water and marched off with a new goal in mind.
“Food, I need to find a reliable source of food. Didn't that girl say something about a cooking skill? Need to get that, and fast.” Completely ignoring the girl, whose name the hell-bread wiped from his memory, Kalthier started walking.
For around five hours, Kalthier cruised the city. He went from restaurant to restaurant, the poor and the rich, looking for someone who would teach him the cooking skill. But try as he might the best offers, he got involved washing dishes for a week, then a series of tedious tasks in order to be deemed ‘worthy’ the skill.
“There is no way i'm spending my first week here washing dishes. Someone´d got to be able to teach me that bloody skill.”. His muttering, having reached a normal tone of voice, turned heads wherever he went. His simple minded obsession with the search of food making him oblivious to all that went around him.

Finally, after hours of searching, he came across a small, rundown bakery. He was now searching under the assumption that the shabbier the place, the easier it would be to convince someone to teach him.
“Welcome” A cheery voice greeted him as he walked through the door. An old, heavyset woman with a kind, chubby face smiled at him from behind a counter.
“Hi, I'm looking for someone who is willing to teach someone completely inexperienced in the art of cooking with no conditions attached” After hours of asking, insisting and begging, Kalthier finally decided to ask for what he wanted in the bluntest way possible. Either they hired him or not, that way he saved himself hours of failing to charm those useless NPC’s..
The kind woman laughed, surprising him. Everywhere else he was received with scorn and suspicion, but this woman somehow didn't seem to mind the way he asked for such a huge favor, in fact she seemed amused by it.
“Oh i don't mind teaching you young one, but allow me to ask a simple question. What has driven you to such desperation to learn, as you call it, the art of cooking. My shop is not the first place, or the last people look for when hoping to learn how to cook. So tell me, did someone direct you towards me or where you simply driven here after exhausting all other roads?” The woman´s cheerfulness and happiness was in complete contrast to her words. I knew this place was shabby but it sounds as if she is the worst cook in the city.
Kyle decided to go with honesty, as she so easily deduced, he had exhausted all other options and at this pace he would be forced to cook the way he did in college, heat, broil or fry whatever you wished to eat until it looks somewhat edible.
“I got ten pieces of something called rye-bread when i got here, but it´s taste and consistency was so disgustingly vile i feared for my life after taking a single bite” Kalthier answered the old woman with hateful passion coating his voice. Only after he finished speaking did he notice that her demeanor had changed. she was gripping a rolling pin with so much strength, her knuckles were white, and the wood was beginning to splinter as she advanced towards him.
“I MADE THAT RYE-BREAD!” The woman´s scream was close to the wail of a banshee. Her presence started to increased and he barely got a glimpse at the system message that popped out.

Doing the best to overcome the fear this monster of a women somehow put in him and hoping his ears would stop ringing, he slowly beat the fear down. Once calm, Kalthier finally caught on to what the woman actually said, her scream having distorted the words. Realizing what that meant he screamed with disgust.
“ Nevermind then!, who would like to learn such a half-assed cooking skill, more like how dare you even call yourself a chef, i wouldn't feed that stuff to rats, much less humans” Kalthier then turned around and ran to the door. But before he could reach it something hit him in the back of his knee, causing him to stumble and slam head first into the wall besides the door.

“Huh” surprise at both the attack, and the unusual system notice caused Kalthier to miss his chance to escape. The furious woman was now standing over him, blocking the door and looking at him with tear filled eyes.
HEY, you’re the one who hit me, how come you are crying?. Seriously, are all women NPC’s this randomly violent and vindictive?
“Do you think i make such a thing with joy? i had no choice, by order of the king all foreigners must be given ten pieces of bread. The cheap bastard is not willing to pay more than three coppers for each. Three bloody coopers!” The woman took another huge breath, and seeing Kalthier about to reply hurried on with her lecture.
“Do you have any idea how of hard it is to create such a thing, the materials for the simplest of breads alone come at five coopers. That i managed to, not only create something that was actually edible for such a meager price, but that i completely fill the consumers satiety is nothing short of a miracle. And you, not only do you come to my shop, demanding that i teach you my skills, which, i might add, i was more than ready to accept. But you had the nerve to criticize my skills as a cook based on such a lousy piece of work, something that, had i had the chance i would have never made in the first place?”
Now Kalthier felt bad. True, the hell-bread was indeed worthy of its nickname, but now that he had time to notice, the smells inside the bakery not only indicated the presence of high quality food, but where making his mouth water.
“Look, i...” A threatening glare silenced Kalthier.
Why does a cook possess such fighting spirit. Bloody developers.
“Shut up. Do not move a muscle” the old woman quickly went behind the counter and threw Kalthier a single slice of white fluffy bread, it smelled heavenly.
“EAT!” Cowed once again by the sounds coming from the rolling pin in the cook’s hand, and more than a little intrigued by the mouthwatering smell coming from the bread, Kalthier took a big bite of the bread.
Shocked, he looked at the bread in his hand and, not finding what he was looking for turned to stare at the woman who now sported a shit eating grin.
“Surprised you didn't I? That bread combines the tastes of and oven baked meatloaf, the crispness and taste of roasted potatoes and the smell of freshly baked bread. Yet, as you can see it’s texture and color differ in nothing from an ordinary bread. go ahead, finish it. you're in for a shocker” She nudged his hand, which was holding on to the piece of bread like it was the holy grail.
Slowly eating the last of the bread, and savoring every every second of it, Kalthier received a jaw dropping message.

“...”
“So?, how was it?, my cooking” She asked, eagerly awaiting Kalthier's verdict. but judging by the grin she directed at him Kalthier was certain she knew exactly what he felt and saw in the message. or maybe it was his tail, waggin uncontrollably behind him.
Not knowing what to say Kalthier meekly answered “Otherworldly. I am truly sorry for my behavior, my foul mood is no excuse for my comments on your hell-bread. Now more than ever i wish to be your apprentice, it would be an honour and a pleasure… If you’ll have me.”
“Hah!, hell-bread, i like that, an apt name if i ever hear one. Look kid...” Sensing a denial Kalthier rushed to interrupt her.
“Kalthier, my name is Kalthier. Please, by this point i’m certain i’ll do anything you require of me, i’ll wash the dishes for a weeks to no end, just please, reconsider teaching me. I must know how to make food that tastes like that even without the bonus it provides. Hell, I’ll even give you my oath to never stop searching for way to make hell-bread tasty or at the very least edible” To think she could do such wonders with a simple piece of breath. Imagining what a real meal from her would taste like made him dizzy.
“Oh Kalthier, you do not know what it is you promise to do. For three months i worked day and night, using every skill and resource available to mei and even then the best result i managed to make, was that foul tasting hell-bread. I really like that nickname by the way, too bad the recipe already shipped across Versailles under rye-bread. Hell-bread was the best i could do with the king’s meager budget and every cook in the continent was tasked with it’s creation. Sadly, there are no dishes for you to clean here, you are the first person to ever take a bite outside the kitchen” Now Kalthier was worried, it sounded like a denial.
It seems living in this world is going to be harder than reality.
Somehow his eyes must have managed to convey his feeling, for she gently cupped his cheek and spoke with a smile. “Don’t look so sad my boy, that just means we can get right on to the cooking, and i’ll hold you to that promise, impossible as it may sound, no matter how long it takes i’ll wait for you. My name is Evangeline by the way, but anyone with the balls to nickname one of my dishes, even the worst i’ve ever made, hell-bread gets to call me you can call me Eva”

Also feedback on the story, characters, events and anything else is more than welcome.
Thanks for reading.
O.o and i'm looking for someone willing to Edit/PR this FF since i no matter how many time i go over it i still miss lots of spelling, consistency and narration errors. {[999aba}]
