Chapter 5

I sat up abruptly, my heart pounding as the distant, piercing shriek of one of my Parasite Queens echoed through the cavern. The sound ripped through the stillness, carrying not only fear but the unmistakable finality of death. One of my queens—gone. The oppressive weight of the loss pressed on me. Something had entered my domain, and it was deadly enough to kill a queen.

Pushing aside my fatigue, I reached out mentally to the hive. The connection was instinctive, not words or emotions, just an awareness of their presence. The threads where the fallen queen had once been were now silent.

The hive’s tunnels erupted into chaos as the queens unleashed their broods in a frenzy. The original Parasite Queen sent her lizards scrambling forward in an uncoordinated tide, their claws scraping against the stone as they surged toward the intruder. Dozens of infected frothfangs charged after them, snarling and snapping at anything in their way. Bats swarmed above in a chaotic flurry, their shrill cries blending into the cacophony of the advancing horde.

The other Parasite Queens joined the rampage, their broods flooding the tunnels with reckless abandon. More lizards darted through the chaos, colliding with frothfangs and tripping over each other in their haste. Bats careened wildly, some slamming into the walls as they scrambled to obey their queens’ commands. The hive was a storm of movement and noise, the queens’ collective rage driving their forces into a bloodthirsty frenzy.

The Flesh Queens were no less chaotic. The original Flesh Queen sent her blobs rolling and slithering forward in an undulating wave, their grotesque forms merging and separating as they barreled through the tunnels. The larger blobs crashed into the walls and floor, their weaponized appendages lashing out indiscriminately. The two-headed flesh bat screeched as it launched itself into the fray, its four wings beating erratically as it sought a target.

The other Flesh Queens unleashed their broods with equal ferocity. Blobs of all sizes surged forward, colliding with the Parasite Queens’ forces in their haste to reach the intruder. The tunnels became a battlefield before the enemy was even in sight, the queens’ creations thrashing and fighting amongst themselves as they jostled for position.

The intruder emerged from the shadows, its sinewy body low to the ground, its movements fluid and predatory. Its mottled skin shimmered with patches of thick scales and slick flesh, giving it a grotesque, patchwork appearance. It paused, sniffing the air, its glowing eyes narrowing as the cacophony of the queens’ forces drew closer.

The Parasite Queens’ lizards reached the creature first, their jaws snapping and claws scrabbling as they swarmed it. The intruder reacted with a feral snarl, its claws flashing as it tore through the first wave of attackers. Lizard bodies flew in all directions, but the swarm was relentless, more piling onto the creature in a frenzy of bites and scratches.

Bats dived at the intruder, their shrill cries filling the air as they tore at its eyes and wings. The creature lashed out, snapping at the bats and flinging them aside, but the aerial assault only intensified. Frothfangs barreled into the fray, their bulky bodies slamming into the intruder with bone-crushing force. The creature roared in frustration, its movements growing more erratic as it fought to fend off the relentless onslaught.

The Flesh Queens’ blobs arrived moments later, their chaotic advance adding to the carnage. Smaller blobs latched onto the creature’s limbs, their gelatinous bodies clinging tightly as they were shredded by its claws. Larger blobs slammed into it with wet, heavy thuds, their weaponized appendages flailing wildly. The two-headed flesh bat swooped down, its screeches piercing the air as it tore into the creature’s back with its twin mouths.

The tunnel devolved into utter chaos. The queens’ broods attacked in a disorganized frenzy, their sheer numbers overwhelming the intruder. Parasite-infected lizards and frothfangs clashed with blobs and bats in their eagerness to reach the enemy. The queens themselves hissed and shrieked, their mental commands barely cutting through the bedlam.

The intruder fought like a cornered beast, its claws and teeth carving through the queens’ forces with brutal efficiency. It spun and lunged, scattering bodies and ichor with every movement. Yet, for every creature it killed, two more took its place, their attacks driven by the unrelenting rage of their queens.

The battle dragged on, the tunnel floor slick with blood and ichor. The intruder’s movements grew sluggish, its roars weakening as it succumbed to the relentless assault. A particularly large blob slammed into it, pinning it to the ground as the two-headed flesh bat descended for the final blow. Its claws sank deep into the creature’s exposed neck, tearing through flesh and bone. The intruder let out a final, shuddering gasp before falling still.

The queens gathered around the fallen creature, their broods chittering and hissing in victory. The tunnel was littered with the remains of the battle—broken blobs, torn lizards, and the scattered ichor of the intruder. The queens converged on the corpse, their movements driven by instinct.

The Parasite Queens’ forces descended first, ripping into the carcass with snapping jaws and shredding claws. Lizard and frothfang alike tore off chunks of flesh, their frenzied feeding reducing the creature to little more than scattered remains. Bats screeched and dove, carrying smaller pieces of the intruder back into the darkness to consume.

The Flesh Queens approached with a different intent. While their broods feasted on the softest tissue, the queens themselves began harvesting the choicest pieces. Flesh blobs rolled forward, their gelatinous forms absorbing and merging with strips of meat and sinew. The Flesh Queens manipulated the collected scraps, shaping them into new, pulsating blobs.

The tunnel floor became a feeding ground and a workshop of grotesque creation. The remains of the intruder disappeared piece by piece, consumed or sculpted into new forms by the queens and their broods. The hive swarmed with activity, the victory fueling their instinctive drive to grow and prepare for the next challenge.

I lingered in the shadows, watching the scene unfold. I didn’t need to intervene; the hive worked as one, driven by purpose and instinct. My queens and their broods had proven their strength, and the intruder’s defeat sent a clear message: this was our domain, and it would not be trespassed upon without consequence. Yet even as the hive devoured and reshaped the remains, my thoughts lingered on the unanswered question—where had this creature come from, and was it truly alone?
