Chapter 3

*one year later*

“Mama! Training!” I said, trying my best to sound like a 1-year-old child.

“I know, but your father isn’t home from working yet,” Mother replied. She rubbed her eyes and continued working on the dishes. I watched in fascination as she used her water magic to rinse and clean the dishes instead of the sink.

Probably saves a lot of time, I mused. Anyway, I should check my status screen.

“Status,” I whispered. The familiar holographic screen appeared in front of me.

Not bad at all, I thought. However, I haven’t used either of my new Skills since I haven’t had a reason to, so the proficiency of both is still at 0. Never hurts to look back over what they do again though. Also, good to know that this system gives me anime-based Skills. I wonder what other goodies it’ll give me?

“Not bad at all,” I mumbled quietly. “Now I just need a few attack Skills so I can properly utilize these two Skills.”

Walking out of the spotlessly clean white kitchen, I thought about what to do next.

“Maybe I should go train in the backyard?” I thought aloud. Walking outside, I wandered around in the bright green grass. Dropping down onto the ground, I began doing push-ups. I kept doing them until I received a system message.

“My leveling has never been fast, but it’s really slowed down since I reached Level 5,” I muttered. “Also, I got my first Skill, [Ki Control], when I reached Level 1, and got my second Skill, [Chakra Control], when I reached Level 5. So maybe I get a Skill every 5 levels? That doesn’t seem too good.”

Sighing, I decided to just continue my exercises until Father gets home. I did sit-ups until I received a message.

I then ran laps around the perimeter of the backyard until I received a system message.

Huffing a bit, I then decided to run a few more laps.

“Hey, kiddo. Couldn’t wait to start training, huh?” Father asked, leaning over the fence. “Just let me get changed into some clean clothes and we’ll head to the gym.”

“Dada! Yay!” I said. He chuckled and went inside. When he came back out a few minutes later, he was no longer wearing his sweaty, dirty work clothes. I rushed towards him and he lifted me over the fence.

“You ready to go?” He asked.

“Yay! Gym!” I exclaimed. He chuckled again and started carrying me to the gym. “Down! Please.”

“Okay. But stay next to me,” James said. He put me down on the sidewalk. I excitedly walked beside him, ready to get to the gym as fast as possible. It took us about ten minutes to walk through the neighborhood to get there. “Alright, let’s head inside.”

Father opened the door and greeted Spencer. We then went into the kids’ area and I immediately started running to the gravity chamber. However, I was cut off by another kid.

“Oops! Were you heading there too?” The boy said sarcastically. “Little brat.”

He stuck his tongue out as he approached the machine. Grabbing onto his shirt, I tried to pull him away.

“My turn!” I said. He just shook me off.

“Go away, kid. Go bother someone else,” the boy said. He pushed me down and climbed into the machine. Pouring, I sat there and stared at the machine. James then walked over and picked me up.

“I’m sorry that happened, Son. Let’s go do something else in the meantime,” Father said. He then carried me over to a treadmill. “This looks fun, doesn’t it?”

“Guess so,” I replied, still pouring. He sighed and placed me down. Turning on the machine, he then took a step back. I started running, matching the machine’s speed. But with how much I ran earlier, I wasn’t getting any benefit from the treadmill.

“Hmm, it doesn’t seem to be really giving you a challenge. Let’s turn up the speed some,” James said. He pressed a button on the treadmill and the conveyor belt sped up. I ran faster, doing my best to match it.

“Better?” Father asked.

“Yes,” I answered. I was still a little upset, but I was willing to let it go. However, it wasn’t long before that kid showed up again.

“Hey! I want to get on the treadmill now. Get off,” he ordered.

“Um, excuse me, but my son is using it right now. Please wait your turn,” Father said.

“Buzz off, old man! I want to use it, so I will!” The boy shouted.

“I’m sorry, but no. Wait your turn,” James told him. The boy stomped and walked off. He then came back a few minutes later with a man who must’ve been his father since they both had ginger hair and blue eyes.

“Excuse me, but are you being mean to my son?” The man asked.

“No, I’m merely telling him to wait his turn while my son is using the treadmill. Especially since he already pushed my son down so he could get into the gravity chamber first,” James explained. But the man didn’t seem to care.

“Hey! You don’t get to tell my son what to do! Stop being rude and back off! Besides, can your son even use any of the equipment here? He’s a toddler, after all!” The man yelled. Father sighed and beckoned me over to him.

“Come on, Charles. We’ll let these buttholes have their way. Besides, this means the gravity chamber is open now,” he told me.

“Okay,” I replied.

“Hey! Who do you think you are, calling my son and myself buttholes?!” The man shouted. “You can’t treat me that way! I’m a mid-level mage! I bet you don’t even have any Mana, you or your son!”

“Is that so? Then I guess you wouldn’t mind having a duel with me, would you?” Father asked. His voice was cold and emotionless, like the edge of a knife. The man who was just acting so confident took a step back, his eyes somewhat fearful.

“W-well, I-I mean, I wouldn’t want to embarrass you in front of your son,” the man replied.

“Oh? I didn’t realize they let cowards become mid-level mages these days,” Father said, his voice still as cold as ice.

“I’m no coward! Fine, I’ll accept your challenge! Just don’t get too upset when I completely destroy you!” The man shouted. Father nodded and walked to the front desk.

“Hey, Spencer, this gentleman and I would like to have a duel in your sparring room. Is that alright?” Father asked. Spender sighed loudly before responding.

“Yeah, I guess so. Just don’t make a mess of it, alright?” Spender replied, scratching the back of his head.

“I’ll do my best,” James told him. Spencer rolled his eyes and went back to the book he had been reading.

Our group of four walked into a large, empty room that was all white. Father and I stayed on one side while the other man and his son walked to the other end of the room.

“Son, why don’t you go stand at the wall,” Father advised. I did as he said. “Alright, let’s get this started! I’ll count down from three, and when I reach zero, we’ll start.”

Father’s opponent nodded to show he understood. Father then counted down, and as soon as he reached zero, an icicle shot towards him. He casually side-stepped the projectile, making it look easy.

“Guess you’re really raring to go,” James said casually. The other man merely clicked his tongue before shooting out more icicles. I watched in fascination as my father easily dodged every projectile. Except for the last one, which he caught in his left hand and crushed. “Come on, I thought you said you were a mid-level mage? Try something better!”

The man just growled and began chanting. However, instead of trying of interrupt him, Father just stood there and watched. His opponent, clearly angry, formed a large drill-shaped icicle. The ice creation started spinning and shot towards Father. But then something strange happened.

As soon as the missile came near Father, it crumbled into powder as if crushed. However, nothing touched it and Father hadn’t moved at all. He smirked and pointed a finger at his opponent. Watching with fascination, I saw that the other man suddenly lay flat on the ground as the floor beneath him cracked.

“I-I surrender! Y-you win!” The man shouted. As soon as he said those words, the invisible pressure crushing him vanished. He coughed and climbed to his feet. Eyes full of fear, he grabbed his son’s hand and ran out of the sparring room.

“What that?” I asked, referring to the invisible pressure. Father just smiled and said nothing as he turned to leave. Pouting, I followed after him. However, my frustration completely disappeared as I ran over to the gravity chamber. Climbing inside, I waved to James to signal to turn it on.

“Alright, I’m turning it up to 2x, Charles. Let me know if it’s too much,” he told me. I heard humming as the machine started up and I felt weight pressing down on me. However, I wasn’t planning on just standing there and enduring it. I began jogging around the chamber.

“Up!” I shouted. I saw Father nod as he turned to the controls.

“Alright, it’s at 2.25x, but that’s as high as I’ll put it for today,” he replied. I continued jogging, determined to increase my stats further.

I then collapsed, exhausted. Father noticed and turned off the gravity chamber. Opening the door, he picked me up.

“Let’s go home, bud. You seem pretty tired,” he said. I nodded tiredly.

While I’ve been able to make this body fairly strong for its size, it’s still really young and tires easily, I noticed. Closing my eyes, I fell asleep, my head on my father’s shoulder.
