Alright. We're going to tell the guards that we're here to talk to King Kilnore. Let's hope that this works.

The carriage makes a sudden stop. I heard voices coming from outside of it.

"You here for a delivery?" someone asks.

"I am. I've got some food here for His Majesty," the driver answers.

That's our cue. Let's go out.

With a great leap, I move onto the road outside the carriage. In front of me is a massive castle. Two guards with spears stand at its gate. Their jaws drop to the ground the moment they see me.

"By the gods, it's Princess Aithne!" one of them shouts.

They point their spears forward, aiming for my face.

"I'm not here to fight you. I want to talk to King Kilnore," I said.

"More like, you want to kill him!" one of the guards replied.

"He has something I want. If he gives it to me, there won't be any violence."

The guards narrowed their eyes.

"You want his head, is that it?" one asked.

"No," I answered. "I want a ring."

"There's no damn way you of all people want to marry King Kilnore! He's a pathetic loser! Only the world's most desperate woman would even consider being with him!"

Well, things aren't going as planned.

"I don't want to marry him. I want a ring that helps resist fire," I explained.

"Do you think we'll believe you? You've been at war with us for a very long time! We're not letting you pass!"

Don't worry. I have one last desperate plan that probably won't work. On second thought, that is a pretty good reason to worry.

"If your king is so pathetic, why not work for me?" I ask.

"Because he's richer than you are," the guard answered.

Right. King Kilnore has one of the best early-level currency farms in the game in his territory. Like I said, it's early-level, but the high-level spots are hard to get to. And King Kilnore had this place for a very, very, very long time.

Basically, he's completely loaded.

"Now, die!" one of the guards shouted.

He thrust his spear at my face. I was caught off guard, and he hit it.

-100 hp.

Out of what, 30,000?

I swung my sword, cutting the guard in half. His companion looked on in complete and utter shock. So, I stabbed him through his heart while he was in a trance.

Okay. It looks like we'll have to do things the violent way. I don't want to kill these guys. But the world would be better without King Kilnore anyway.

Moving forward, I stepped into the castle. Several guards had heard the commotion outside and were already running towards me. They brandished their spears in a defensive formation as I came at them.

"Don't move!" one of them shouted.

I stopped.

A moment of silence passed between us. Eventually, I broke it.

"So, what's your plan now?" I asked.

"Well, to be honest, I didn't think you'd actually stop," the guard answered. "

"Oh, I see."

I jumped forward with my greatsword and stabbed him in the face. He fell dead to the ground. His comrades stabbed at me with their spears, but I jumped back.

My chest started burning with the basest embers of flame.

The guards ran forward at me. I cut one of them in two with a single blow. Another scraped my shoulder with his spear.

-50 health.

I swung my greatsword wide, cutting through several guards with one swing. Another enemy came at me, but I ducked under his spear and ran him through.

There was just one guard left at this point. He gazed at me with a look of complete and utter terror.

"King Kilnore isn't paying me enough for this!" he declared.

The guard started running.

Okay, we're going to have to kill him. If we let him get away, he'll tell the other guards about me. Then, King Kilnore will have the whole castle coming at us. I'd rather not kill someone who's running. But we don't have much of a choice.

I jumped forward, swinging my sword. The guard's spine was sliced open, and he fell dead to the ground.

There. Now, no one will tell the other guards that we're here. Even if someone finds the bodies, they won't know who killed them. As long as we...

A sigh escaped my mouth as I looked down the hall ahead of me. Its left side was lined with windows that gave the courtyard a view of the hallway.

I'd forgotten about all the windows. It isn't the sort of thing you remember all that well when you're playing the game. The guards can't actually see through them in the game, but they will be able to here.

I lowered myself to the ground and started crawling, moving under them.

The noise of footsteps came to my ears. They were from outside, just beyond the windows. If I hadn't crawled, the people there would have seen me by now. Still, I hastened my pace. Someone could come into the hall at any moment.

As I got halfway through the hallway, I saw a large door to my right. Inside of it was a large feasting hall. A knight in full plate armor walked down it. There was a halberd in his hand.

Alright. I remember from the game that this room is actually a trap. When you walk inside it, the knight jumps back and makes the floor collapse under you. You're then sent to an underground area where you have to fight a boss. We're not going down there. It would waste too much time.

I waited until the knight passed and then crawled past the door as fast as I could. Thankfully, the act of crawling hadn't been strenuous enough to make my chest burn.

More guards passed through the courtyard on the outside of the hall. Some of them stopped to take a glance inside. I held my breath whenever one of them did that, and they thankfully didn't hear me.

Then, I reached the end of the hallway. There was a door to the left and a door in front of me. Both were closed. I stood up, looking behind me to make sure I wasn't followed.

The door to the left leads to the courtyard, if you haven't already figured it out. It's the shorter route to King Kilnore. But it's also more dangerous. And it isn't on the way to the fire-resisting ring.

Now, the door in front of us leads to the castle's roof and battlements. It's longer, less dangerous, and leads to the ring. It should be obvious which way we're going.

I opened the door in front of me. A set of stairs, shrouded in darkness, was behind it. Stepping inside, I began my ascent. Bit by bit, I got closer to the top. A faint burning in my chest crept in once more.

Alright. We're not going to be able to avoid combat when we get up there. There is a knight guarding the roof at the top of the stairs. From there, we'll have to fight our way through several patrols. None of these guys are any match for Princess Aithne.

After that, we should reach King Kilnore's Tower of Knowledge. There is a Deathless there, but he should run away the moment he sees us. In the game, he's an NPC that sells the player magic spells.

From there, it's one parkour challenge, and we'll have the fire-resisting ring.

I make it to the top of the tower. Opening the door, I come to a strange sight. The knight on guard duty lies on the ground. A nudge from my foot confirms that he's dead.

Has someone come here before us?

Walking past him, I moved down the ramparts. The patrols there are all dead.

Convenient, but it makes me worry about what killed them. Still, I should be able to...

Before I can finish that thought, the dead men get back up. The soldiers all look right at me.

"Princess Aithne's here!" one of them shouts.

I ram my sword through his mouth. His head is cut in two. Before any other guards can react, I swing my weapon around. More of them are cut to pieces.

Pushing myself hard and fast, I cut down these low-level guards in a few seconds. There is a great burning sensation in my body, a horrid pain after that. But I endure it.

Then, I hear a chorus of war horns blare throughout the castle. They are followed by the ringing of alarm bells. I feel a headache that has nothing to do with the Ember of Longing in my chest.

Great. It looks like the guards that we killed earlier have been resurrected. And now, they've told everyone I'm here.

I'm guessing you must be wondering how this happened. Well, whenever a Deathless rests at an Ember of Longing, most enemies return to life. Bosses don't. There are also some unique non-boss enemies that stay dead. But all minor enemies resurrect. They also revive if a Deathless dies.

This confirms that the person who killed the knight and patrols is a Deathless. Considering how people who weren't in the game have shown up, we shouldn't be surprised.

The dead patrol around me comes back to life again. I cut them down as fast as I possibly can. My chest is in incredible pain at this point.

Judging from the time it took for them to come back to life, I'm guessing the Deathless died. We should hurry. If we can get to them soon...I'll have to ask you what we should do then. I'm not sure.

I run over the ramparts as fast as I can. My chest burns more and more as I strain myself. Another patrol comes at me ahead. They cut get to tiny pieces. Then, one more arrives. Soon, they are a pile of corpses as well.

Up ahead, I see a set of steps that leads to the top of a tower. I rush to them, climbing up them before stopping.

In the center of the tower top is a floating orange ember. It hovers above a pile of ash. Yes, this is an Ember of Longing. Benches sit around the tower's edges. There are no enemies there and no sign of any Deathless.

I sit down on a bench taking heavy breaths. My body is in an incredible amount of pain.

It isn't anything I can't handle with the training I've done, but I've really pushed myself. Right now, the best thing is to rest.

No, wait, I can't rest! King Kilnore's men will be on me soon!

I get up and start to move when a man suddenly appears next to the Ember of Longing. He is about 5'8". On his chest is a piece of black plate armor. His arms and legs are adorned with steel that is coated with bronze. There is a frog-mouth helmet on his head, and I can see the faintest hint of purple eyes when I look down at its visor. They convey complete and utter terror.

"Oh. Princess Aithne. You're not supposed to be here..." the man takes a step back, pointing a longsword at me in a defensive stance. "But...ummm..."

Okay, things just went from bad to worse. This means that all the patrols I killed came back to life. They'll tell the other guards where I am, and we'll be swamped.

This Deathless is even worse. He's a low-level Deathless, yes, but we're at an Ember of Longing. If I kill him here, he'll just come right back to life. I don't know how many times I'll have to kill him before he dies for good too.

What should we do?

1. Kill him and...

"Perhaps we've gotten off on the wrong foot?" the man sheathes his sword and extends his hand. "I know that we Deathless are supposed to kill all the Divine Heirs, but you seem like a nice girl. So, maybe we could be friends instead?"

His voice is filled with fear.

Okay, what should we do?
