Alright, it looks like we've come to a decision. I'm going to train like hell until I can deal with Princess Aithne's burning pain...do you feel the pain I feel? No? Okay, that's good. Because I'm about to regret my life choices.

After everyone left, I stood up and clutched my sword in both my hands. Then, I took a deep breath.

I feel the most pain when I infuse this sword with fire. So, we'll just charge it with fire over and over again until I get used to it. Let's hope it doesn't take us too long to overcome the pain.

I infuse the sword with fire, flames blazing over it. White hot pain flashes through my body. My vision turns blank. I pass out.

My back feels soft grass as I wake up. I force myself back to my feet. Then, I infuse my sword with flames once more. The pain is so great that I go unconscious.

This repeats over and over. Whenever someone comes in, I take a break and hide my pain as best as I can. Then, I get back to igniting my sword the moment they leave.

I don't know how much time passed. Maybe it was hours, maybe days, maybe weeks. It's hard to tell when I don't know how long I'm unconscious.

But then, at the end of it...

My sword ignites in a crimson blaze. The fire licks the air around it, dancing like a fairy of destruction. I jump around and swing my sword. Pain wracks my body. It feels like my entire being is ablaze, but I withstand it.

This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.

I do every one of the boss' moves. Then, after I'm done, I let the fire in the sword die down and sit back on the chair. My body is covered in a throbbing, burning pain. But I'm satisfied.

We did it. I don't think we're anywhere near Princess Aithne's level yet, but we can at least withstand the pain enough to take out most Deathless. Well, most Deathless are pretty weak, but the point still stands.

But I don't think that's good enough. Like I said before, a determined enough Deathless can kill you, no matter how powerful you are. They just need to keep trying. And by the time they make it here, they'll be strong enough that they have a chance against us.

It's a good thing you guys are with me. You had some pretty good ideas while we were talking about what we should do next.

One of you suggested trapping the Deathless since it takes a lot of deaths to kill them. That might work, but they'd get out eventually from starvation. Still, I think trapping them is a good option.

Another of you suggested moving the nearest Ember of Longing over a volcano. That would keep Deathless from getting to it, which would mean they'd have to travel longer to get to us.

We know that Embers of Longing can be moved. One of them's in my chest, after all. But I don't know how they're moved. The only person that I know who moved an Ember of Longing is King Suibhne. We'd have to ask him how he did it, but remember that he's insane.

Someone else suggested finding something that gives permanent fire resistance, like a magic ring. I like that idea. The pain's still holding us back, and the ring would lessen it.

I also know where there's a ring of fire resistance. The good news is that it's in one of the earliest areas of the game. The bad news is that everyone in that area is an enemy of the Kingdom of Hysterland, and we'll have to go into their leader's castle to get it. We can take pretty much anyone there, but we'll be in prolonged battle. I'm not sure if we can withstand the pain long enough to get the ring.

We could try negotiating, but I don't think that would work. If we could have talked things over with the other Divine Heirs, the war would have ended long ago.

Bringing the army isn't an option. Without me in the fortress, we'll need them here in case something happens.

We also have the option of going to the game's starting area to kill the Deathless before they can get strong. I don't think we should do that. We've spent a lot of time training to get used to Princess Aithne's pain. By now, most of the Deathless are probably out of the most basic starting area. To put it simply, I think it's too late to do this now.

So, what should we do?
