A New World

The way I came into this new world was through pain. A cutting sensation gnawed through every fiber of my being. Stabbing, stinging, and burning was all that I could feel at that moment. It was as if the pain was on the levels of cells, with them being ripped apart and formed again, in a new way every second. I wanted to scream. But no sound came out. To which I then realized that I had no mouth nor a human form.

And if only the pain wasn’t there, I would be able to know that I was in an unknown place and that I was a blob of nothing.

Eventually, the radiating pain began to draw back, until it was a slight nagging feeling at the back of my consciousness. It became so small, I could just feel a slight throbbing. It was then that I could focus on the present.

I had no recollection of why I was in so much pain, or what I was doing before. I didn’t even know my name or how old I was. All in all, I had no memories, so all I could do at that time was to look at where I was.

The forest around me was mostly silent, except for the occasional rustling of leaves caused by the wind that whistled around trunks of the hazel-colored, towering trees. Occasionally, I was able to observe a few forest animals: squirrels, birds, and a few insects. Examining all this, I then looked down, expecting to see my hands and feet, but those weren’t there. My whole body was missing! All I saw was the forest floor. Now panicking, I turned around. Still nothing. It was as if I had become invisible…

The next second, a holographic screen popped up, obstructing the view from my agitated self. It took me a few seconds of moving around and still seeing that the three-dimensional screen was following me. Which then after I began looking at, reading the small amount of information displayed in front of me.

[Skills: ]

* [Possession]

* [Basic Intangibility]

* [Basic Mana Blast]

“Ghost? Possession?” I asked instinctively.

[Possession]

Control beings lower-powered than yourself

Hmm, interesting…As I thought of one still, the holographic letters would appear again to describe it for me. What about the other skills that I had then?

[Basic Intangibility]

Pass through objects

[Basic Mana Blast]

Fire a projectile made purely of Mana

Alright, I thought I understood. So this was like those RPG games young people would play? I had skills, a level, and a class…so I probably have to get stronger and try to survive?

Well, in order to do that I had to try out my skills, right? First, I decided to activate [Intangibility]. Then, I walked or maybe drifted to a nearby tree. I paused then reached out my body, which passed right through.

Whoa!

The feeling was extremely cool. It felt as if the body of the tree and that of mine intervened for a second. At first, it was slightly uncomfortable as it felt unnatural, but after trying a few more times, I managed to get the hang of it.

However, after the 10th try with the increasing thickness of the trees, I wasn’t able to pass through the biggest tree I found like I could with the smaller ones. I also felt extremely weak, as if all my energy had been drained. Perhaps this skill required Mana? One of my skills was called Mana Blast, so I assumed that beings fed off Mana to survive and use their skills in this world.

Now my Mana reserve was most likely depleted, so I couldn’t experiment anymore.

[Basic Intangibility] —> [Simple Intangibility]

Ah, nice! The system rewarded me for my efforts! But I was wondering how I can regain Mana so that I can try out my other skills…Possession sounded powerful.

Perhaps the Mana would refill through waiting?

Or maybe there was some skill I could get that told me how much Mana I can get or how much mana I had at the moment…. But then, I felt extremely frail. I couldn’t even float as I had before, so I didn’t exactly have the strength or will to worry about my Mana. Exhaustion came over me and I slowly descended onto the forest floor, almost immediately falling into a deep slumber.
