Chapter 3: Cliche

So I started my mission of invading the house. While still holding the handkerchief in my mouth. I walked around the terrace and observed the windows. They are tightly shut. Breaking the glass wouldn't be a good idea. They will despise me for destroying the property let alone letting me stay in the house, I might be chased out of the farm.

I shook my head and canceled that idea.

I trotted out of the terrace and start circling the house to see if there is an opening. Strange, the windows are all shut. They normally would've opened one or two.

Couldn't find any openings. I almost gave up on this thought. But that is when I see a rat hole beneath the wall on the back of the house. The hole is not big but is enough for me to squeeze in if I dig. Curiosity draws me closer to that hole. With the tiny paw of mine. I tried digging one leg into the hole to kinda feel around.

It feels like there is some space in there. Therefore I started digging the dirt to widen the opening more. I stuck my muzzle into the opening. Sniff sniff, all I can smell is dust and rust.

I pushed myself in until my head finally popped out of the other side of the wall. It is pitch dark. Luckily my wolf eyes quickly adjusted to the darkness and gained vision.

So, this is a storage room.

I can see a lot of dusty boxes lying on the racks. I further pushed myself in until my whole body went through the hole. Pop! I rolled into the room slamming into one of the boxes. It made quite a ruckus since the box collided with another one and fell over.

Crap! I hope they didn't hear it.

Instinctively, I hid behind the rack and boxes to see if there is anyone coming to this room. Although I am supposed to openly bring this handkerchief to Mira. But I don't want to be caught making a mess. I don't want to lose all the points I've gathered for a month. By points, I mean their impression of me.

A short moment passed. There's no sign of living coming toward this room. Geez, that was close.

I crawled out of the rack and head to the door.

Of course, it is locked from the outside. Just what am I expecting.

Struck by disappointment. I turned around and about to head out of the hole. But then, my adventurous self whispered to me. Since I'm here, it wouldn't be hurt to look around, right?

It is not a big storage room. Probably can fit only three or four adults in here with all the thing scattered around. I bet this place has been abandoned for quite some time. Probably just some useless stuff. I thought to myself.

I jumped on to an old desk to get a better view of this room. Since I'm tiny, it hurts my neck to look up all the time. Well, it's not a bad thing to be a wolf. At least I didn't end up a frog or something like that. Could have been worse.

"Hmm... boxes, tools, chests, and books" I mumbled as I scan through the things that look like have not been touched in decades.

The books piqued my interest. But, there's no way I would understand the words written in it. The chests are locked and the tools are just old and rusty farming equipment. I jumped from rack to rack as I rummaged through the boxes. But it only contains papers and letters that I couldn't read.

Sigh, I wish I can read. I need to think of a way to understand their written language.

The excitement I had before is gradually diminished. Sigh.

I take a look around the dirty storage room once more to see if there's anything besides ones I had scanned through. I looked above me as I aimlessly scan the ceiling. Then, I noticed something weird with the ceiling floor. The ceiling looks strangely uneven.

The more I focused on the area, the more suspicious it is. It looks like some kind of a hidden door that's not closed properly. When I re-observe the room, I noticed that on the doorknob, there is a sign of it being touched recently. There's a sign of footprints on the floor too by judging how the dust weirdly scattered around it.

A normal human wouldn't have noticed these signs. Since I have the eyesight of a wolf. But shouldn't wolf unable to see color? But here I can see the color just fine. It works just like my previous human eyes. But I can see further and wider. Any slight movement in my line of vision will be known to me. I wonder if the other wolf in this world also sees the same.

Connecting the available clues, I've concluded that the last human who came into this room went directly for the secret area in the ceiling. I wonder what's in there. The ceiling isn't particularly high up and surely the height of the room doesn't match the height of the first-floor wall that I see from the outside. There must be quite some space built on top of the ceiling.

I jumped from rack to rack to get to the highest point of the room. When I was about to jump to the nearest rack to the ceiling. I miscalculated the landing and fell down off the rack. Thud! It made quite a sound. I wriggled in pain for a while before I caught the floor reverberated by heavy footsteps. Someone coming!

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

I jumped into the nearest box and hid in the dark.

The sound of the footsteps gradually come closer until it stopped right behind the door. The silence is driving me crazy. Should I sneak out?

Click

The door was unlocked. Slowly the door is creaking open. I dare not take any big breath. Slowly slowly. I try my best to not break out into nervous panting like this body used to do. I do have better control over this body now. Footsteps are followed after the door hit the wall.

I cannot see who is the person walking into this room and I am not planning on peeking too. But that person didn't seem to be looking for the source of the sound I caused. Instead, she pulls out the chair behind the desk and climbed on it, at least that's how I portrayed from all the sounds I hear and I was right.

From the little opening of the box I hid in, I can see quite clearly of the ceiling area where I see a pair of hand trying to slide open the little door I was trying to reach earlier.

Beyond the door, it has indeed quite some space to put a box or two. Then, she dragged out a wooden box with her hands. It is not a big box, it fits perfectly on her palms. She is Daisy. The mother of the Wood children.

I quietly observe what Daisy is going to do with that box. She looks secretive and careful with her movement, to not making any noise to alert those in the house. I can safely assume that she didn't come for me at all. But, what's with that behavior?

She opened the box and took out a tiny glass potion with a slightly glowing blue liquid in it.

"Mamaaaa!"

Daisy flinched, so do I from Kennedy's shouting. She hastily returns the wooden box back into the ceiling and slid it close. She put the potion into her dress pocket as she stepped down, push back the chair and rushes out from the room without forgetting to lock it back in a hairbreadth.

"I'm here honey!" She thumped away as she answered from the distant, not knowing my presence in the room.

At least I am safe, but what was that?

I don't feel good. Suddenly, a long train of cliche stories went through my mind. Stepmother, wealthy landowner, a suspicious looking potion. Doesn't those feel familiar?

Could it be.. poison???

It's not like I am particularly fond of the family. But, they are the first family to adopt me in this world. They give me food and a place to stay. The most important of all, they give me information about this world.

Lots of things gone through my mind.

What if. What if that thing is really poison and Daisy isn't the good person I think she is. Let's think calmly.

What will Daisy gain from poisoning Maven? Wealth.

What will happen when Maven is dead? She gained power and control.

What will happen when Maven is not here to lead? Mira will lose her standing.

What will happen when Mira is no longer respected? I may be abandoned!

No way, I can't let it happen. Not when I am just starting to comfortably settle in this place.

I dash out of the box and hurried out of the room. While still holding Mira's handkerchief in my mouth. I trotted to the front door.

"Oooff! Woof! uuurr..wooof!" I try to bark my loudest, but It sounds so puppy to my ear. The vocal cord hasn't been developed maturely yet. Well, this is quite embarrassing.

Click!

The front door is opened soon after by the housemaid. While she's still confused by my intention. I rushed through the little opening beside her and went into the house for the first time.

"H-hey!" The maid is surprised as she finally starts chasing after me. Gotta find Daisy, I thought to myself.

I ignored the maid and hopped like a rabbit around the house. I do not know where is Daisy but my instinct tells me that she gotta be in the kitchen, so I followed the savory smell of their dinner and there she is, the Wood family is sitting down behind the table.

"I made you a tea, it will help you relax for the night." Daisy explained as she hands out the teacup to Maven.

Relax for the night??? Hell no!

I dashed into their dining area. "Gray?" Mira saw me and Daisy looked surprised. I won't let you have your way! I thought as I determined myself to knock the teacup. But I was too late. Maven has taken a sip of it before I crashed into Daisy. Shit!

Although I had used all my strength to dash and crash. But Daisy didn't budge at all, instead, she crouched down and picked me up like a baby.

"My.. my.. what are you doing here Gray?" She asked with the gentle smile she usually has but I know her evil intention!

I struggled, wriggled out of her grip, and fell down. I looked at Maven. He also looked at me, with a questioning face.

"I am sorry Madam. He suddenly dashed in." The maid apologized as she finally catches up to me, with an unruly breath.

Maven gonna die! or so I thought. But, I do not see any reaction from him.

"Ah! My handkerchief!" Mira noticed and came to me. "Thank you Gray" She thanked me sweetly and my tail wagged slightly.

No, wait. How's Maven??

"I see.. so you are returning her handkerchief. Good boy Gray." Daisy continues to talk like nothing happen. The dining is continued and I am the only one who seems to be making a fuss.

"The tea is delicious." Maven added as he took a few sips again. I gulped nervously.

"Yes, I got it from my father. It's planted at the far east and known for its healing effect. Especially good for restoring stamina." Daisy explained as she walked to the cabinet near the table. She took something out of it, a little glass potion contains a slightly glowing blue liquid.

Eh?

She openly walked to the table with the potion and open the lid. "It smells good too." She said as she gives it to Maven. He took a breath and let out a relaxing sigh. "Indeed." He agreed.

Eh?

"Now that you have fulfilled your mission. Let's go out little wolf" The maid picked me up and hold me close to her chest. She bowed to Maven and Daisy as she excuses herself out.

Eeehhhhhh??

The maid held me out of the house and put me down on the terrace. I watched her close the door.

Am I wrong? I must be. Maven seems alright to me. I stayed for a while and didn't seem to hear any screaming or weird sound from the house. The sun is starting to set and the night passed peacefully.

The day ended normally.
