Chapter 2: Gray

In the middle of the forest where beautiful and lush mountains spread across the horizon. There lies a lovely townhouse in the area which only connected by a single unpaved road leading to the other side of the mountain. Although remoted, it's not like there's not single soul passing the road at all. Instead, there are horse carriages going around back and forth every once or twice a day. Pulling boxes of fruit in the carriages.

Yes, I have been adopted into a family who runs a fruit farm. Looking at the size of the farm spread across the area. It is quite a big scaled farm. Every box they use to store fruit has the word 'Wood' carved on it. Not that I can read, that's what I heard from the merchants and farmers talking.

"Graaaayyyy! Fetch!!"

There she goes again.

"Ooof!!" I responded to the command by immediately hopped away with four legs and chased after the stick she threw pass me. I caught the stick with my mouth while jumping mid-air.

"Good job!!" She complimented as she waved as a hand sign to retrieve it back to her.

Never have I been thought that I will be doing this kind of thing. Throwing my pride as a human being. Not that I am a human anymore. Sigh...

I held the stick while running back to her. She patted my head as she continues complimenting me. "Good boy, good boy." Then, she scratched my chin.

Uhh... But I don't hate this feeling tho.

It has been a month since I stayed with the Wood family. This little girl, Mira Wood, named me Gray just because I have grey fur. I don't mind since I don't remember my previous life's name. Actually, I kind of has forgotten quite a lot about my previous life. My family, my friends, my lover, they all have a blurry face in my memory. Including my own look too.

I remember how the previous world looks like, how the society works, and many more. But I don't remember how I lived that life. All I know is that I have a fulfilling life, everything was perfect until that damn God killed me with his clumsiness. And then turned me into a wolf in my current life. All his sweet promises went vain. But, when I think of it. The request of being reincarnated into a wealthy family. It's not actually wrong. I am now residing in a wealthy fruit farm owner family anyway. In a wolf body tho.

So, did the request actually applied to me at all?

I requested intelligence, strength, wisdom, and luck. If to observe other wolves, I do have the intelligence surpassing a normal wolf. Because the other wolves that are adopted in the farm to guard the fields are not that bright at all. I can communicate with them but they are very simple-minded. All they think is do command, get the reward, eat and sleep. I could say, I have the body of a wolf with the mind of a human.

As for the strength, wisdom, and luck, I am not sure at all. I guess I should be considered lucky to have a safe place to eat and sleep.

"Greeting Miss Mira. Oh hey, little gray, you look as fluffy as usual." A farmer walked pass by Mira and me while holding a big box of fruit harvest. With a big smile, the guy put down the box and head toward me.

"Look at this! Gray is so smart!" Mira bragged at the farmer guy as she raised her hand toward me. She opened her palm, "Hand." She commanded. Although reluctantly, I raised my paw and rested on her palm. "Woof!" I responded.

"Oh my... how smart!" The farmer guy seemingly impressed as Mira looking so satisfied with her achievement.

"I can't believe how this tiny pup learns thing so fast." The farmer guy continued.

Of course, I am, don't compare me to those stupid dogs there.

The farmer guy crouched down and mimic what Mira did. And so, I moved my paw to his palm. His eyes beam with surprise. As if this is not a normal thing that should happen.

Well, there are a few things that I've learned since I came to this world. First thing first, they don't understand what I speak at all. To them, I was probably just whimpering and barking. But I can understand their language well. I am not sure why but this is an advantage to me. I have become the Wood favorite wolf by understanding what they want and act smart.

Second, the setting of this world is similar to my previous world but seems to be in the medieval era. The residents wear medieval looking dress and shirt. The housing also built in a vintage way. The living being like horses, chickens, rabbits, dogs, and fruits are the same. Except that there are additional creatures which they called 'Magical creatures'. There are goblins, slime, and even dragons. I've never really encountered those. It seems like they don't lurk around the area that's protected by the national magic barrier which includes The Wood Farm. I guess I need to learn more.

Third, this world is heavily oriented in magic. Yes, magic!

I'm not sure how it works but it seems like every living being has a dose of Mana that can be processed into a magical command. Just like how the father bind me before. The weird sensation I felt before was of his mana shrouding me in order to bind me. I don't know the detail yet since I can only listen to the information they provided once a while when they converse. Mira and her half brother Ken studied magic from a tutor that comes to the house every day.

Since I am not allowed inside their main house, I could only learn this much.

I need to find a way in.

That's what has been my target since I came to this house. To be allowed to roam inside the house. Thus I tried my best to gain favors of the Wood family member for a month.

Beside Mira, there's the father whose name is Maven. That's what I learned from the wife Daisy as she called her husband by his name while the farmers and merchant, of course, would call him Mr. Wood. Maven is a very strict employer but also wise. He treats his servants well therefor the servants also respect him as a result.

There are only two children resides in this family. Mira and her half-brother Ken which means Daisy is Mira's stepmother. I haven't heard about Mira's biological mother. I assumed that her mother might have been dead thus the father remarried. Daisy is a good wife and a loving mother, even to Mira. I can see that she's genuinely cared for her. Not like the normal stepmother plot in the most story. I could say, this is a well-balanced happy family.

Mira's half brother Ken is only two years younger than her which is currently 4 years old. In my previous world, human baby in their fourth year would be just playing around while learning to converse and associate with their surrounding. But here, Ken is already be required to start learning magic. That just shows how important magic is in this world.

"Mira! Come in! The dinner's ready!" Daisy called Mira in distant. She stood at the terrace of the house calling her to come back. "Yes Mama!" she replied immediately.

"See you tomorrow Grey!" Mira patted my head once more and rush toward the house.

Sigh... another day ended without learning anything new.

As I watch her back drifting further, she dropped her handkerchief in the middle of the rush. That's when I was struck by an idea.

This is my chance!

I quickly hauled up the handkerchief in my jaw and chased after her. Mira is about to go into the house. I couldn't bark as the cloth will be falling off and so I whimpered. But it was too late. They have gone behind the closed door. In disappointment, I subconsciously drooped my ears while sitting in front of the door.

I really need to get in or I won't get to anywhere like this!

A risky thought flashed through my mind. Even though I am still tiny, a three-months-old puppy or so that they described me. I believe I can make the jump to that open window if I wanted.

But, will I be welcomed?

Maven, the father, seems to be satisfied with my smart attitude. I once alerted him when he has a letter fall from his suitcase. He praised me and said how it saved him. So, maybe, I will get away by this. I am returning Mira's item anyway. So, I have an excuse.

Alright, I will just go for it!
