Chapter 13: Detective Kanbe

Chapter 13: Detective Kanbe

As Kanbe got ready for the job, he grabbed an iron sword and a leather armor for maximized mobility. He was deeply aware that it would be pointless to be wearing extra defense that would slow him down, if he was going to be put almost down in one hit, considering his last fight with Joryujoh.

Not only that, but he was aware that if he fought against a godslayer… The one to die would be him. The vast gap between him and any godslayer was clear, annoyingly clear, and there was no way that Kanbe could deal with it any time soon.

‘If I can't fight them, I might as well be agile enough to dodge them. It's not like I could handle their attacks. At least, for now. So I will be focused on mobility and only fight when it's a must.’ Kanbe thought to himself.

Kanbe then went to find Saida, who was waiting for him outside his room, in order to investigate Donny's death and bring the culprit to justice.

“Luckily you are here already, Saida.” Kanbe said with a wide smile.

“Most would call me princess. Get it in your head!” Saida said while frowning.

“Okay, okay. Let's go then, princess.” Kanbe said, while smiling at Saida.

Saida could only pout and go forward, until she almost got lost, while Kanbe followed her and then guided her out of the mansion.

Once out of the mansion, Kanbe and Saida walked towards the workplace where Donny died from the forest outside Andving.

“So what can you tell me of Moriarty?” Kanbe asked while walking alongside Saida.

“I suppose you don't even know the basics of that individual. First, almost no one has seen him without a disguise. Only those that work specifically for him, under a severance pay of their life, have ever seen him. They get supported by Moriarty and his money, in return they are the ones who deliver letters. The one most used of them is James Morrisille Articus. An anointed knight of Elstivia. He was a simple mathematician until Moriarty made contact with him. Once he was trained, he became a teacher in Flosais. After defeating an archlich in a game of chess, and then killing said archlich for his insolence, he became an anointed knight of the kingdom.” Saida explained calmly.

“Hm. And couldn't people consider that the anointed knight is in reality Moriarty?” Kanbe said as he scratched his chin.

“Some did. But for some reason, those who do either get caught up in a mess that sends them to a psychiatrist and ensures they won't even consider that notion… Or are killed. Moriarty seems to deeply dislike being underestimated and called a snobby teacher.” Saida replied to Kanbe's question.

“Hm. Or that, or they may be closer to the truth than we may believe. And Moriarty prefers to be clean about it.” Kanbe said calmly.

“If so, the appraisers have messed up big time. Many have checked sir James status sheet. In fact, the same anointed knight showed it in a trial. And it lacks the skills required for him to be Moriarty.” Saida said, surprised by the conclusion Kanbe arrived.

“Does Moriarty have disguising skills? And does he use sir James form often?” Kanbe asked, clearly suspicious of the anointed knight. ‘I may not know how things go with the nobility in this world, but I feel like there’s something suspicious in the fact that Moriarty is awfully conscious about being called a snobby teacher.” Kanbe said, having a weird feeling about Moriarty’s actions.

“Well, nonetheless, it’s gonna be something we will have to find out sooner or later. Hopefully. As I said before, there are no survivors after trying to confront sir James about it.” Saida said with a worried look on her face.

“Well, then let’s not confront sir James about it. If they all did the same thing, then avoiding it should prevent getting in any sort of trouble.” Kanbe proposed calmly.

“Yeah, but we are risking our necks on that. I don’t mind it, as that’s a normal day for a royal, but you should be spared from that risk. As a hero, you are one of the few… Maybe the only one… To be able to seal and defeat the dark lord.” Saida said, clearly worried about the hero.

“One way or another, I’ll be dealing with dangers along the journey. So it’d be ideal to at least try our best whenever is possible. No need to worry if it’s going to be unavoidable.” Kanbe said with a wide smile on his face.

“Either way, once we get to the workplace in which Donny was employed, we will have to ask about what happened to the owner. And then investigate the location.” Saida said, before taking a deep breath.

“Yeah, but also check the motive. We have one. But I don’t think that Moriarty would put that much effort just because the guy was your boyfriend. There are a lot of detrimental consequences of doing that just for that reason, as you are a princess and political marriages are still a thing in this country. Or so I fear. So losing prospects due to killing a boyfriend of the princess should be… A bad idea.” Kanbe said, pondering the situation.

“Yes, you are right, but then what other reasons Moriarty could have to kill Donny?” Saida asked calmly.

“Not him. The client. If he’s being paid by your father, a fact we need to ensure first, that means that Donny did something that made your father choose to eliminate him painfully. More than just being your boyfriend.” Kanbe corrected Saida’s statement quickly.

“True. But that would be hard without acquiring any sort of letter that the client has used. And probably Moriarty makes sure to burn them all once they are not of use to him.” Saida said calmly.

“Then, we only need to catch a messenger and find out if they know the contents of the letter and find out enough information to confirm the reason behind Donny’s death.” Kanbe said, while the duo arrived to Andving.

As Kanbe and Saida walked inside Andving, the elves looked with a surprised face to the princess. It was natural for her to walk around the capital, but she always had a large amount of knights surrounding her to avoid any assassination attempt, and the people knew to respect the princess. But things wouldn’t be simple for the duo, as they walked towards the place where Donny used to work, due to the fact that several members of the Doryoh clan were rounding up the workers of the bar in which Donny worked in.

The members of the Doryoh clan wore black metallic biker helmets, purple suits with the emblem of a golden dragon on their jackets, black shirts, white neckties, black office trousers, and black Oxford shoes. All of these items were equipments made from materials infused with mana, specifically crafted by expert blacksmiths, that reinforced the defense as much as some high quality armors by redirecting and reducing the kinetic energy of any attack that struck the equipment. Alongside the defense, they were enchanted to protect against most elemental spells, repair themselves with mana, and increasing the user’s resistance to charm and mind manipulation skills.

“Doryoh clan members. They all are grunts of the clan, by the lack of the pin on their chest and the fact they wear the biker helmets. They are called bikers inside the clan. So probably they are sent here to harass the establishment. But it’s rare. The establishment itself is enough powerful to deal with grunts. And the guards would stop them. It’s one of the elven traditional establishments, after all. It’s not like the guards could be bribed to do something that would kill them. Is Joryujoh going to poke my father?” Saida said as she squinted her eyes.

“Let’s hear them for a moment. We may hear something interesting.” Kanbe said, as he walked closer but stayed near a corner of the street to hear the grunts.

One of the grunts pushed one of the workers, a black haired fox beastkin that had fox ears and a fox tail. This beastkin had brown eyes, and pale skin, with a delicate frame that could break down if struck hard enough. The fox man wore a butler outfit, and a steel collar on his neck, while trying to not fall to the ground by the grunt.

“Oi, fox boy. Do me a solid and forget anything about the dwarven gal you saw the day Donny got killed. I am sure you can do that! If not, don’t worry, we have a mentalist in the area… He can wipe all your head. But we can try to help first with a crowbar. I dunno why the boss says that crowbars are better than maces, he always talks about this fella named Evan using them quite a lot, but I must admit that the crowbars are sturdier than maces.” The grunt said, while another grunt walked while wielding a crowbar.

“And cheaper! But well, we can enjoy the situation quite well. It’s not usual that we get to harass this place, and they treat us like crap!” The other grunt said, clearly excited to attack the fox boy.

As the fox boy trembled and was unarmed, both grunts were about to attack without any concern for the worker’s life, but Kanbe rushed to attack the grunts with his sword in hand and using Holy Bullet to shoot several bullets at the grunts and make them back down. The bullets struck the suits they were wearing, but they couldn’t pierce said suits due to the enchantments used on them, and the grunts were stunned by such a reckless charge.

“Oi, boys! Round up! We have to stop a hero! Remember: You can break his legs, but make sure he still breathes! Killing a hero is a no-go for the clan, and if we do that: We can expect our fingers to come off, one way or another, and to be sacrificed for the clan!” One of the grunts, clearly the leader of the group, exclaimed while the other grunts just went to focus on Kanbe.

Saida was surprised by the sudden move of Kanbe, but then she apparently understood his plan (in reality: Kanbe didn’t have any plan, just a ton of luck they decided to focus him), and quickly ran to rescue the other workers.

Kanbe had charged blindly, unable to stop himself from going to save the unarmed worker, and was using his sword to block a crowbar strike while ducking to avoid being struck by the other grunt’s fists.

‘Crap! Their equipment is better than mine. I should back down, but can’t! If I don’t do something… They’ll assault the fox beastkin and probably kill him. But how can I… Wait! Holy magic makes light! How about I increase the radiance given by Holy Heal, while reducing the healing power to prevent the grunts from healing with the use of that spell?’ Kanbe thought to himself, while trying to swing his sword to make distance between the grunts and the fox beastkin.

As Kanbe swung, the grunts instinctively dodged the attack (out of fear to the Heavenly Defiant attack). The rest of the grunts were getting closer to Kanbe and the fox man, slowly surrounding the hero, and that was what Kanbe wanted.

As long as there was a sliver of a point to disengage, Kanbe could easily open a path for the fox beastkin… And hopefully one for himself too. Kanbe was starting to notice the equipment and level gap between the grunts and himself, and things weren’t looking good for him… At all.

‘If the grunts surround me, I am dead. There’s no way out of it. Or that, or probably almost dead. Seeing that they don’t want to kill me. But I already had a brush with death, and it probably was accidental. Not like it could happen again, right? Best to dodge it if possible.’ Kanbe thought to himself, as he tried to circulate his mana to do exactly what he had in his mind.

As Kanbe circulated mana, and gave the idea from his mind to his mana, an idea, and a name flourished from his brain for this spell. It was a spell variation of the Holy Heal known as Holy Flash. A powerful flash bang style spell, which blinded everyone surrounding Kanbe who looked at him, that used the same amount of mana as Holy Heal.

“Okay, just look at the ground for a moment, fox man! This is not going to be pretty!” Kanbe said, as he quietly prepared the spell, while the fox man turned his head to the ground expecting a beatdown to happen.

“Getting ready for what’s going to happen!? Good for us! Boys, get onto it!” The leading grunt exclaimed excitedly, while the grunts did what the leader ordered them to do.

“Holy spell variation: Holy Light!” Kanbe said, while circulating his mana, as bright light came out of his hand making an orb of holy mana that exploded.

Once the orb exploded, all around Kanbe was engulfed by a cold light that blinded anyone looking at the direction of the orb, which did blind all the grunts while Kanbe dragged the fox beastkin while keeping his eyes closed. Even without the sight, Kanbe could use his mana sense to find his way around if he didn’t run.

But due to the intensity of the spell, most grunts were on the ground after being blinded with what could only be considered as having a lightbulb flashing their eyeballs directly.

‘Worked far better than expected. I don’t understand why my brain did the spell variation like that. But I suppose it must be something I need to ask Saida, probably she knows better… After all, she can use magic and probably for far more time than I have.’ Kanbe thought to himself, while guiding the fox beastkin, as he moved through the streets of the capital and trying to locate Saida.

While the hero ran away from the grunts, who were under extreme pain after being blinded, Nigredo appeared in front of the grunts with a displeased face. She was sure that the hero wouldn’t catch her, and her body had modified her eyesight to avoid being blinded by the holy light until it dissipated.

“Hm. This is why lord Evan’s poem was like that. On a night when the moon is filled with too many clouds, you can’t find true light. As the clouds cover the moon, they block the sacred and cold moonlight. He meant that too many weaklings going near a powerful individual will end up making the strong one look weak by association. That gives me too much to think about. Had they been of utility, they would have killed the hero. Or, at the very least, crippled him. Well, at least I learned something out of this disaster, so I won’t be killing these grunts for being absolute shit.” Nigredo said, as she glared at the grunts.

The grunts could only groan, albeit weakly, while rolling on the ground due to the damage done by the light spell used by Kanbe. Nigredo sighed, as she saw the entire mess as an affront to her planning, while she used several purple cubes to teleport the grunts away without being teleported alongside them.

“I suppose I could inform Joryujoh, but his grunts will do better than myself. And being honest, I dislike the idea of being a pet of anyone. The only ones who could have me as a pet are either Lady Grandine or Lord Evan. The rest of the world seems to be useless. Well, at least, I can use them all for her plan.” Nigredo said calmly, as she moved away from the building.

While Saida and Kanbe were getting away from the grunts, Rei and Haseya were in an elven market. These markets were special, as they had all sorts of special hexagonal metallic landing pads each 40 steps to allow easy teleportation from one part of the market to another, while being as big as any modern mall (also higher than most malls, at least four floors).

The market itself was made inside a massive baobab, modified to house the mall it had with wooden floor and shops made out of wood due to the reusage of the entire tree (while keeping it alive), and it was a thriving place.

All sorts of people were inside the market itself, buying things from the shops made inside the baobab tree, as the market sold almost anything. From clothes of all sorts of countries from Terra, especially the kimonos from Krebs, to fish and other foodstuffs (with few spice selling places, as elves weren’t keen on spices).

Rei and Haseya were in one of the kimono shops of the market, calmly trying out all sorts of kimonos, while Haseya just looked tired of trying out clothes. She wasn’t keen on trying clothes all the time, but she started to feel the fatigue after trying several times similar kimonos but with different patterns, and she managed to not get frustrated by focusing on the fact that this shopping spree was just as part of the mission.

Rei had chosen a pink kimono with a pattern of golden bellflower on top of it, white socks, alongside a pair of zouri heels. The kimono itself was tight enough to accentuate Rei’s curves without truly showing anything of her body, unless her cleavage, and it was attracting the attention of many young boys who were with their girlfriends.

Haseya, on the other hand, was taking a blue kimono with a star pattern on top of it, white socks, alongside a pair of zouri heels. Similar to Rei’s kimono, Haseya’s kimono was tight enough to accentuate her curves, even though it covered her cleavage quite well. But even if said kimono covered Haseya’s body quite well, the Rebirth Hero was feeling quite embarrassed by the nature of the clothing she had picked for herself.

Nonetheless, the clothes were paid by the allowance given to the heroes by the different countries. The good thing of a centralized economy, from the Bank of Ezneas, is that they would have money even if they bought clothes on other continents (as all the countries used the same monetary system of bronze, silver, and golden coins).

So the girls had acquired the items they were seeking, and Rei looked quite happy of being able to acquire such high quality clothes for a good price.

“Well, with these clothes, we should be able to get into the Doryoh clan escort business. And so we can catch clues to Donny’s death.” Haseya said, while using inventory to save the clothes she had bought.

“And you have experience with the escort business, so it’ll be easier than expected. Let’s just hope that no one tries to interfere much with our plan.” Rei said while smiling.

“Well, the Doryoh clan isn’t aware of the plan. So it should be rather safe. But we are quite known, so they might not trust us directly. And we don’t know what Kanbe might do if he learns of Donny’s death.” Haseya said, with a worried face, as she walked through the market alongside Rei. ‘Kanbe must be able to go past that situation, without my help, if we are to defeat Evan. But I can’t tell Rei anything, to avoid the penalty for disclosing information from the other timelines.’ Haseya thought to herself.

“Oh, knowing him: He’ll try to stop the Doryoh clan, without a doubt. And he’ll be in trouble for sure if that happens. The Doryoh clan is not a godslayer group, but has a godslayer as their boss. And they have the backing of some powerful godslayers, not the Magic Corp, which can be rather troubling. After all, there’s that gap between anyone who isn’t a godslayer and a godslayer.” Rei said, as she looked worried, while walking.

“The variant skills and spell variations. The first of many things that prove someone is a godslayer. Just like their different methods of casting spells.” Haseya said while walking. ‘To not count that their mentality is different. They all go beyond human limits. What they call going beyond death. And the Four Heavenly go beyond that step, the step denominated going onwards unto death. A state of mind beyond the average zone. Their focus becomes sharp, and most godslayers just become capable of using all the variant skills and spell variations they know of with untold proficiency. But in the case of the Four Heavenly… It’s a state beyond that. Their bodies forget about limits, ignore pain, and they fight with everything they have with a proficiency that could rival the proficiency of a god in the art of using mana.’ Haseya thought to herself, remembering how dangerous Evan was.

As both girls walked towards the exit of the market, Haseya felt a sharp pain in her abdomen and recoiled a bit. It was a rare sensation for Haseya, but Rei looked at Haseya with a surprised face.

“Oh, so it’s that time of the month for you. I didn’t know! Sorry! Well, we can wait for a few days and have Kanbe deal with it for now.” Rei said, as she helped Haseya to walk, while Haseya simply grunted.

“Ugh. I can handle the pain… But it might put off the guys of the Doryoh clan… So I will accept your proposal.” Haseya said, while walking with Rei’s help, as she tried to focus on anything else rather than with the pain. ‘Ugh, this is the worst. Right at this moment? Right before one big incident!? This is the worst, for sure, as being out of commission right now is the worst situation for the heroes. Especially with that man choosing to do what he wants.’ Haseya thought to herself, while the pain didn’t subside.

And so, the two girls went walking back to the mansion of the heroes. With Haseya feeling the pain of the month, for sure, she was unable to fight properly nor assist the other heroes. Which led to Haseya having to take a rest, while Rei chose to go on her own to the Doryoh club to join as an escort for a few days to find information on Moriarty.

***

Meanwhile, back with the hero and the princess, they were making sure everyone of the establishment in which Donny died was accounted for and getting them ready for interrogation about the incident. It had been a close call for the hero, but his new spell variation that came from both inspiration and his mana sense had saved them both.

Once they had gotten them together, they interrogated every single one of the workers of the establishment to know what had transpired. And so they all talked about the supposed Mary, who left right after Donny’s death, while Saida became more sure that it had been Moriarty.

After getting all the testimonies, and escorting all the workers to the mansion, Kanbe and Saida started comparing notes. It was Kanbe’s idea to do so, as Kanbe knew slightly how his father did his work, following the police methodology to catch a criminal.

“So that Mary appeared suddenly, and she was near Donny when he talked with James Morrisille Articus. And so Donny died while talking to sir James, who left right after his death or right before his death. The timing is important.” Saida said, pondering on the situation.

“That is, if James did leave. What if, instead of the anointed knight, it was Moriarty? By what you told me, he can shape-shift perfectly. Even Appraisers, and mages who use Full Analyze, are tricked by the shapeshifting abilities of Moriarty.” Kanbe said, following his gut more than his mind this once. ‘The appearance of Mary and the disappearance of James are two mysteries, but why should they be that? Sometimes, it’s best to drop all the data and ignore the noise and common sense. If we do that, the truth may remain.’ Kanbe thought to himself.

“It’s a known fact that sir James has a close relationship to Moriarty, as Moriarty uses his shape a lot of times. I suppose it must be a necessity, due to usually working to kill nobles, as an anointed knight can open a lot of doors that would usually be closed. Especially if they are houses of nobles, and other buildings owned by nobility. But why would he need that shape now?” Saida said calmly.

“Maybe it’s not a change of shape. It could be that Moriarty is the anointed knight. He’s just playing with the knowledge we have about his disguise skill, in order to make us ignore the obvious fact. But we need proof. And I fear that just a few people testifying won’t be enough. We require hard evidence. Like a letter written by sir James, and another written by Moriarty specifically to sir James. This way, he wouldn’t be able to sneak out of the situation by saying that it was a forged letter from his noble persona. There’s no proof as damning as that. After all, you can recognize someone’s writing style unless they do it with a machine. And I don’t think that Moriarty would have that in his noble persona’s life. Not without raising some suspicions regarding his identity.” Kanbe said, while raising his eyebrows, noticing a surefire way to catch Moriarty red-handed.

“Yes, but for that: We would need to find someone who has a letter from Moriarty, and get a letter from Moriarty to sir James. Compare them, and then prove it is him. The first one, I can handle it. But we need the second one, for sure, and we don’t know where to get it. Unless we go directly towards sir James, and investigate all of his correspondence.” Saida pointed out, as she noticed the difficult path ahead.

“How about first we get one from sir James, to anyone else, in order to compare it with the one of Moriarty? Then we get the one from Moriarty to sir James. That way, we can choose whether we continue or not.” Kanbe proposed, as he pondered over the situation.

“Sounds good, but can’t be me. Moriarty probably knows of me, and will suspect me from the start.” Saida said, while smiling. ‘Finally I got that damned assassin’s ankle! Just a little bit more, and he’s going to go down!’ Saida thought to herself, imagining how the people would thank her for catching the greatest criminal mastermind on all Terra.

“I could do so, just going to meet the renowned mathematician. Also, I could use other methods to catch him. After all, no one knows that sir James is a reincarnated person… And I could use some mathematical operations to force him to make a mistake.” Kanbe said calmly.

“Yeah, but getting an appointment with sir James will be hard. He’s sought out by many nobles, and he has countless seminars. A tight schedule, with few spots open, that no one knows. As a way to protect himself, he is the one who handles all of his schedule. So you’ll have to catch him by surprise, by intruding inside one of those seminars.” Saida said, with a worried look.

“Then how about I ask the Magic Corp about it? They may help with the information gathering.” Kanbe proposed, considering possibilities to carry out the plan.

“If they know of Moriarty’s identity, they will undoubtedly interfere. While godslayers have different factions, unless it’s a clear fight between factions, they never interfere with other factions. So we’ll need another approach.” Saida said, as she frowned, while Kanbe looked surprised.

“So even if they hate another faction, they won’t move to interfere with them? Why? Does Moriarty have that much influence?” Kanbe asked, not understanding the situation fully.

“It’s not Moriarty’s influence alone. He’s from the Free Alliance. The Free Alliance is a godslayer faction with a diverse variety of ideologies, methodologies, and individuals. Every godslayer that follows the Free Alliance’s laws is accepted in the Free Alliance. One of the most notorious members of the faction is Sun Wukong, the Monkey’s Clan patriarch and leader of the renaissance movement of Sansifta. With such political power backing the rest, it’s hard to even pressure them. Alongside Sun Wukong, we have other important individuals. Like Azmosdei, the president of a huge mercantile company that could interfere with Magic Corp if a corporate war started. Moriarty has his own weight, due to all of his illegal smuggling, illegal bars, and illegal gambling, but his connections make him even more formidable.” Saida explained calmly.

“So not only does he have a sway over the nobles, he has powerful friends that could interfere if things got troubling. Uh, that may be troubling. Who could go against Moriarty, if we can’t use the Magic Corp?” Kanbe said, as he tried to find a way to go against Moriarty without fighting him.

“Well, the heroes. Leshelle started it, but we can use the confrontation as a way to get the heroes together and go against the godslayer. Leshelle taunted another godslayer, Jackie, who is a member of the Free Alliance. While it was a stupid move, we can turn it into a powerful one by pointing out that Moriarty has been taking us all for fools and been doing his business while hiding in plain sight.” Saida proposed.

“Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. But we need a link there. We need to locate the link, and then exploit it. We need to locate Jackie and Moriarty, get proof of those two working together now, and then we have it all ready to start going after Moriarty.” Kanbe said, as a smile was forming on his face.

“Well, first we should get something written directly by sir James. While I get one of Moriarty’s letters from my father’s office. It’s not going to be easy, but it’s doable.” Saida said, as she smirked at the hero.

“Then we have a plan. Better that we split for now, to avoid being seen too close. The journalists may take that chance to make some misunderstood news, and then I’d be on Moriarty’s top kill list. Just like Donny.” Kanbe said, as he started leaving the area.

As the hero left, Saida just pouted while looking a bit hurt by Kanbe’s words. It was due to the fact that she remembered that Donny probably died because of her, and she couldn’t avoid feeling guilty of his death. All because she liked him, and due to the fact that she needed a proper husband if she wanted to avoid being married off to any noble that would give his father an advantage for several centuries at least.

After recovering from the drunken duo of Moriarty and Joryujoh, Jackie and Azmosdei dragged them both to a place that was a perfect middle ground between the surface and the true underground of Terra.

The place itself was located deep within the sewers of Andving, a maze of stone tunnels with roots making navigation even harder as the roots had passed through the few cracks of the medieval tunnels, and it was hidden behind a false wall.

The false wall itself was located in one of the turns in the sewers, right before a waterfall of wastewater, and it was done through the usage of an illusion. Unless you were aware of it being false, it would seem perfectly real, as it only deactivated for a few seconds when struck by someone with a level equal to a godslayer.

Behind the false wall, there was a small room with a red couch, a massive orb that seemed to be a TV, a wooden table with a bowl filled with false fruit in front of the massive orb, and an array of Norse runes written over the eastern wall of the room.

This room was where Jackie crashed for now in Andving, a sort of safe house for godslayers that worked away from their sphere of influence, and a place from which she planned her next plans.

“You even have a mana TV. Jackie, I have never seen anyone with such a TV until now. Especially that big. It’s big enough to crush a small dog. Either way, where do I drop the foolish yakuza?” Azmosdei said, while dragging Joryujoh inside the room.

“You can just drop him anywhere away from the array. You know, I got a friend of Paytell prepare that array for me to have my own kitchen.” Jackie said, as she dropped Moriarty near the couch.

Azmosdei simply shrugged and dropped Joryujoh right besides Moriarty, only to sit down on the couch while taking a deep breath, as Jackie made sure the false wall was reactivated.

“So, you know the news, right? Moriarty has a big target on his back this time. The heroes are going to go after his ass. And you know as well as I do that if they do… He’s going to murder until the last of them, and maybe even decorate Paradiso’s walls with their blood. Or at least the door, depending on how much blood he manages to drain out of the heroes.” Azmosdei said nonchalantly, while looking at Jackie.

“Yeah, I have Leshelle after mine. So I guess that we are going to be the bad guys. But nothing wrong with that, right? It’s not our first time being treated like bad guys, with Evan going around. With Paytell, Gio, Robin, and the others… If we are together, we can drive back most of the godslayer forces around. Or at least survive for a decade or so, and annoy them enough to have a shitty afterlife. I can make peace with death if I manage to cause that.” Jackie said as she smiled.

“So, one way or another, the Free Alliance will have to unite. Wukong was already in a tight spot, with one of the sponsors of the heroes being the tiger clan. But now? We need a plan. They’ll try to get inside Doryoh’s club, in a way we can’t stop without getting some bad suspicions, and we have to deal with that while the yakuza is still with a hangover.” Azmosdei pointed out, as he frowned.

“Well, three of us with a target on our back. Maybe four, with Robin, as we can expect Hermes to get into issues. To not talk about Darya, which makes five for sure after what the dwarves did to Eli. Azmosdei, we may have a lot of opponents this time. Any fancy idea? Before I ask Paytell?” Jackie said, with a worried look on her face, as Azmosdei glared at Jackie.

“We could get the Occult Hotel to go after the Magic Corp. Drive some heat out of us. Magic Corp will assist the heroes, sooner or later, as the heroes will be huge sources of investments and those otakus are pragmatic when it comes to getting investments. The Technocratic Revolution could help us too, but good luck getting them to agree with us. We need Evan or Wukong to do that, and our monkey king is busy fighting a civil war without giving the land of the dragons and Chimeralot a perfect chance to shank him.” Azmosdei replied, while glaring at Jackie, as he started trying to think of a way out of the mess.

“True. But the Occult Hotel won’t move easily. They love their necks, after all, and won’t die so happily. We need something to drag them to the fight.” Jackie said, while frowning.

“Well, there’s a way to get them to move. Tokugawa. We talk about the possibility of the hero being a member of the famous, and most hated, do-gooder of the godslayers. Takuto Tokugawa. The Occult Hotel wants his head, as he was trouble, but they would take so much damage dealing with the people he trained. But if we do that… We’ll need someone who can share the stuff quickly. And using the Magic Corp, or my company, won’t be good enough. We need to talk with him. You know who.” Azmosdei said, as he looked serious.

“No. Absolutely not! That one became a weird sort of devil. One that isn’t bound to Inferno nor Paradiso. And even if he’s weaker than any devil due to the cost of being free of the limitations of devils, in terms of power and abilities, he’s a godslayer.” Jackie said, clearly angry about Azmosdei’s proposal.

“Nonetheless, he’s the one we can trust with this. Especially as he hates Zerax and Katas more than even the siblings of Legadonia. He’ll be exactly what we require. Malaskador is exactly who we need for this.” Azmosdei said calmly, while Jackie prepared to fight as she started looking around the area.

As Azmosdei uttered Malaskador’s name, the air got chilly and a sound akin to an old radio syntonizing. And just behind Jackie appeared the devil they talked about, a slim, dapper, medium-sized man with a pair of curved horns.

This man had a snow-white skin, as if he was a porcelain doll, with long black hair with red strands covering his forehead, sharp white teeth, with black sclera and golden irises with black and reddish slit pupils (which looked slightly draconic). This man was wearing a black pinstripe coat with crimson lapels, a crimson dress-shirt with a hexagon on his chest, a black knotted bowtie with a pearl in the center, long black dress pants, and a pair of Oxford shoes.

“Calling me, dear Azmosdei? What happened to your policy of not doing deals with devil kin and devils? Did you have a change of heart? If so, I am delighted to be the first to get such chance!” Malaskador said, while Jackie jumped to the side, as he smiled broadly at the merchant. Malaskador’s voice was the sort of voice you’d expect coming out of an old radio, in the 90’s, with a jovial tone.

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

“Goddamn it! Now he knows the hideout’s location, Az! What the hell!?” Jackie exclaimed, clearly angry about seeing Malaskador.

“Oh, what a charming belle! Already being cute, for a godslayer!” Malaskador replied to Jackie’s words, keeping his broad smile.

“Malaskador. She’s a godslayer. We both know that you can die, ever since you freed yourself of the constraints of being a normal devil. No longer bound to a concept, immortal, immune to exorcism and soul damage, but you have a mortal body. That means that you can die, and get bound to another concept once more. And she could end you, you may have skill trees unlike the other devils… But your concept powers were reduced to special skills.” Azmosdei warned the devil calmly.

“Okay, okay. It wasn’t my desire to hurt her feelings. After all, I am the first who knows how dangerous godslayers are. And why I have a policy to avoid fighting them.” Malaskador said, as he raised slightly both of his hands while keeping his broad smile.

“Good. If you contact the Occult Hotel for us, and give them some information… You can get some wonderful entertainment.” Azmosdei explained calmly.

“Oh, what a good thing, old sport! Now, you have my undivided attention. So what sort of news you want to share? I am known as the radiowave devil after all, even after the radiowave concept got purified. All in all, I did a good choice in doing what I did to break free of the concept. Even if I had to become more… smart, when it came to using my abilities.” Malaskador said while keeping his smile.

“Takuto had family back in our world, and it seems one of them is in Terra. As the hero. Kanbe Tokugawa.” Azmosdei calmly said.

This made the devil to raise an eyebrow, even while keeping his smile, as he tried to discern what sort of plan Azmosdei had in mind. It was unnatural for the one known as Woolman to give that information for free, and even more unnatural to give it to a devil, without expecting a favor in kind.

“What sort of plan is running inside your mind, Azmosdei? The Occult Hotel will go after the hero, to get the samurai to move once more. They want him buried alive, for what he did to their operation. It’s gonna be chaos, and not the one Naria likes, mind you.” Malaskador said, surprised of Azmosdei’s plan.

“The heroes are going after our heads. So you can imagine that we don't want to deal with them. The Magic Corp will support them, that's a fact, and the royals and nobles are using them to eliminate the godslayers who do not fit in their agenda.” Azmosdei explained, as he looked at Malaskador.

“Oh. So more like being forced to take arms than going after them. Understandable. Nonetheless, I do not work for free!” Malaskador said, always keeping his smile, as his eyes looked expectant.

“And you won't! Takuto killed you when you reincarnated as a demon, and got you tied to the concept of radiowave. And then actively sought to purify said concept to kill you. I hope you have room for a little bit of revenge, Malaskador.” Azmosdei said, while smirking at Malaskador. ‘Let’s try to get this devil to cooperate by kindling his wrath. He is from Wrath, after all.’ Azmosdei thought to himself.

“Hm. Tempting. But not enough. If the heroes find out my existence, I’d be in the same sinking ship you are in. And I can die rather easily now, compared to my radio devil days, even though I have quite a lot of power. So I don't want to give the knights of Zerax a reason to hunt me. If Evan was around, I'd agree happily to this. He was the strongest godslayer, rankings be damned, and by a huge margin. Fighting him would be like causing the stock market crash in 1929 back on Earth. Entertaining, but not worth my skin.” Malaskador said, as he walked closer to Azmosdei.

“One more thing you’d have. Van is trying to use the heroes, it wouldn't be a surprise he wanted to kill you or Evan. Someone told me. A certain cat you despise, when I was going to visit Jackie.” Azmosdei said calmly, while Jackie looked at Azmosdei surprised.

As Malaskador processed Azmosdei’s words, his smile disappeared and looked quite angry at Azmosdei, while the radiophonic voice distorted and left out horrendous noises. But that was just for a moment, as his smile returned after the outburst, while Jackie just covered her ears.

“That damnable cat! And Van is trying to make himself important!? The insolence! Well, if Van is going after my neck, or Evan's… I have no other choice than to happily agree to your plan. I’ll get the Occult Hotel involved, and a few thugs too. If Van thinks he can get fancy with this jolly old fella, I’ll have to go back on air and show him what it means to mess with Malaskador of Wrath.” Malaskador said, in a jovial tone.

“Must you use that radiophonic voice always, alongside that creepy smile?” Jackie asked while frowning. ‘He was bearable before becoming a devil, but damn it all… His voice is always so annoying.’ Jackie thought to herself.

“Absolutely! The first is my trademark back in Inferno, I wouldn't be remembered if I didn't use it. The second is more of a choice: You're never fully dressed without one! And you get people trying to discern what is going on in your head with it. Ideal if you want to annoy nobles.” Malaskador replied, with a jovial and even slightly excited voice.

Jackie simply kept frowning, while Azmosdei's simply nodded at Malaskador as he agreed with the devil.

“And this could be your ideal comeback from that well-deserved sabbatical period of five years. Alongside that, how about you get a small radio tower and a radiophonic show?” Azmosdei said while smirking at Malaskador. ‘This is exactly what Malaskador wanted. He wanted to be acknowledged, but had to retire due to a deal made with Ezneas. But there’s always a backdoor to this sort of deals, and I abused that backdoor this time. Ezneas won’t mind it, with all the chaos going on in the godslayer sphere lately. So no worries about a repercussion for returning the radio devil back from his sabbatical vacation.’ Azmosdei thought to himself.

“Oooh, you know how to get my old radio heart excited. Very well, want to shake hands to commemorate the deal? I promise to not get your soul through this deal.” Malaskador said while preparing to do a handshake.

As Malaskador did that, Azmosdei shook the devil's hand while sending mana into the devil which triggered a special skill of the devil and sealed the handshake for a few minutes while dark mana came out of it.

“Okay, I'll admit it. Gutsy of you to use Deal Maker against me like this. But it's just some reassurance for both sides of the deal. Be careful with such tricks, you may get into trouble someday.” Malaskador said while smiling. ‘This bastard, just like any deal between devils, this passive special skill has a backdoor. And he has used it. Getting more stats won’t do, especially since I lost all the extra stats I won before becoming an unbound devil, but well… I’ll let it slide for now.’ Malaskador thought to himself.

“I know, but this time was worth the risk.” Azmosdei said calmly.

“And I would love to have my radio station ready ASAP. It would speed up my part of the deal.” Malaskador said calmly.

“Okay. Give me a little bit of time. But do your part without it for now.” Azmosdei retorted.

Malaskador simply shrugged and decided to just teleport away, while the sound of a radio syntonizing sounded around the area, as Jackie looked tired due to dealing with Malaskador.

“This is a terrible idea, Azmosdei. Give him this much, and that one will start using Deal Maker to grow in power once more. Only that this time, he'll use it to reclaim his power without being bound to the radiophonic concept.” Jackie warned while frowning.

“True. But he's not going to be a problem for us. And if Evan comes back, just like how it seems regarding Nigredo’s actions lately, he’ll be kept in check by that bastard. And I can handle the two bastards who ripped me off back in the godslayer era with one stone. It's ideal for me.” Azmosdei said while smirking at Jackie.

“Yeah, and we get the Occult Hotel involved in this mess. High risk, high reward.” Jackie said while shrugging.

“Oh, by the way, the owner of the radio station I am getting ready for Malaskador will be you, Jackie. You wanted to start a business, so here you have a safe and fun one. Alongside the fact that you’ll be swimming in money after the devil gets his due. He may be a shithead, but he's talented when it comes to radiophonic shows. And you can always get paid for each radio that uses the show, while selling merchandise and getting Malaskador into a podcast.” Azmosdei said while smirking at Jackie.

“The last one will be avoided. The bastard can manipulate magnetic waves, not as much as Naria, but he can destroy any podcast. And we both know he’s a radio enthusiast, who hates podcasts.” Jackie said while frowning.

Azmosdei simply chuckled, while Jackie decided to just use the runic array to open a path towards a massive kitchen with floor made of quartz tiles, quartz tables, a square shaped oven made of stone with cookers on top of it, a sink made of steel, and a massive horizontal wall cabinet made of quartz.

As Azmosdei started thinking where to place the radio station, Jackie started preparing a pineapple pizza with the idea to annoy both Moriarty and Azmosdei as they didn't like pineapple pizza.

Mana Fatigue Resistance: The user is more resistant to the side effects of using too much mana at once, allowing them to recover twice as fast as they should without this passive.

Spatial Resistance: The user is able to nullify teleports that affect them if they don’t want to be teleported.

Expansive Inventory: The inventory is twice as big as it should be.

Space Distortion: Active, 10 MP. The user can use this to nullify space magic that the user detects, as it distorts the space and nullifies the incoming space magic. It can be only activated as a counter.

Space Jump: Active, 5 MP. The user uses mana to jump at the speed of light to a location in a range of 50 meters.

Space Distortion Aura: Active, 15 MP. The user can create an armor that will send away projectiles, and nullify attempts of using space magic on the armor user, to themselves or an ally. This aura armor can only work for ten minutes, and can only nullify up to two space spells and withstand 300 attacks with projectiles.

Space Transaction: Active, 200 MP. The user can do a transaction between themselves or an ally and any space of similar size they have knowledge of. Fair warning: If the user doesn’t calculate well, the target may end up fused to a wall and unable to escape.

Mass Teleport: Active, 3000 MP. A mass teleportation that takes anything in a range of 100 meters, and sends it to another place. Takes both inanimate objects and people, so it’s way more taxing than any other teleport.

Mass Space Transaction: Active, 5000 MP. A mass version of Space Transaction. Exchanges a space of a size equal to a range between 50 meters and 300 meters with another location. Takes everything. Pinnacle skill.

Devil (Master):

Devil’s Charm: The user’s charm becomes twice as strong as it normally should be.

Devil’s Dark Might: The user’s dark magic can nullify most immunities, and is two times stronger than average dark magic.

Devil’s Immunity: Instant death skills do not work on them. Poison, mind manipulation, nor charming doesn’t affect them.

Devil’s Soul: Allows the user to ignore the requisites for Warlock skills, but doubles the mana cost of all the skills they use.

Devilish Gift: Active, 1000 MP. The user can imbue their creations with their mana and turn them into Devil type creations. Only works on golems and undead.

Devil’s Sacrifice: Active, 2000 MP. The user can sacrifice one of their creation to create an amount of imps equal to the level of the sacrificed creation.

Devil’s Deal: The user can imbue their power into a deal, to strengthen it and turn it into a domination contract. Pinnacle skill.

Occultist (Master):

Occult Knowledge: The user’s capacity to recognize traces of eldritch creatures is heightened, they are immune to eldritch mind manipulation, and can wield their mana to recreate the eldritch mana exuded by the eldritch creatures.

Occult Bravery: The user is immune to fear and terror, capable of withstanding even eldritch terror.

Root of Occultism: The user can use occult symbols to empower rituals, barriers, and normal spells.

Occult Blast: Active, 150 MP. A powerful blast of eldritch might, that can cause terror on those without enough willpower.

Occult Pull: Active, 20 MP. The user summons a tentacle or a claw to pull a target towards them, while said tentacle or claw causes a lethargic state through the insertion of dark mana in the target’s body.

Occult Barrier: Active, 300 MP. The user creates a barrier with eldritch energy that blocks all sorts of communication and teleportation. Can also block attacks up to a damage equal to 40% of the user’s MP and HP.

Soul Occultism: Active, 90 MP. The user can use eldritch energy to empower their soul and defend against soul attacks.

Occult Blaze: Active, 120 MP. The user releases a wave of fire, empowered with eldritch energy, that burns the opponents and curses their wounds. Cursed wounds can’t be healed without a holy skill or holy spell.

Occult Familiar: Active, 20 MP. The user can summon a familiar, they must tame them first, from another dimension. Once they tame the familiar, they can call it whenever they need assistance.

Occultist’s Portal: Active, 500 MP. The user opens a portal to the lair of an eldritch beast, for a very short moment, to allow it to attack a target in the area and drag them to their lair. Can fail, and can be interrupted easily. Failure to using this skill leads to mana shock.

Occultist’s Manipulation: Active, 1000 MP. The user can use eldritch mana to manipulate, and even possess, a target. Success depends on the user’s charm and intelligence, and the target’s resistance towards said effect. Possessed targets can be manipulated from afar, but the hold over their mind weakens with distance, and the user has to stay besides the target four hours per week to keep their hold. Pinnacle skill.
