The Champion's Gambit

Pikener approached the king with a scroll in hand, “Your Majesty, here is the list of potential champions for the army and personal protection.”

Alexander took the scroll and unrolled it, scanning through the names and information. “Verily, these are amongst the most adept warriors in our dominion,” he observed. “Alas, our coffers permit the engagement of but a single one. Whom wouldst thou suggest, Pikener?”

The general thinks for a moment before answering, “I would put forth Sir Leofa, the Third Scourge of Imps, Sire. He is the most formidable candidate on our roster and is famed for his fierceness in the theatre of war.”

Ealhun chimed in, “But don’t ya forget ‘bout Ollo, the Executioner! He might not be the beefiest, but he’s got a fine name, and I’m bettin’ he’s got a heap o’ nifty pranks hidden in ‘is cuff!”

After a few moments, the king set the list down and rubbed his chin. “I value thy counsel, my advisors,” he declared. “I have resolved that we must direct our concentration towards the enhancement and betterment of our existing forces prior to contemplating the recruitment of any champions.”

Haemon said, “Mayhap we could consider nurturing one from our own cadre of knights. Such a course would conserve us a substantial sum of gold, and would accord us greater governance over their tutelage and allegiance.”

Vasos said, “If we go an’ hires us a champion, we’s also riskin’ ‘em bein’ bribed or sweet-talked into turnin’ ‘gainst us. Schoolin’ our own knight, now, that’d give us more keep-safe, it would.”

Pikener spoke up, “Sire, if I may proffer, what of Bloud, the Veteran Knight? He has displayed unwavering fidelity and honor whilst serving our realm for many a year. Given appropriate tutelage, he could emerge as a formidable champion.”

Alexander considered the suggestion for a moment before nodding. “Indeed, thy argument holds merit. I am aware of Bloud. He has showed his worth repeatedly. Henceforth, I accept the suggestion. Summon him forthwith, with due haste.”
