Wait.
I did not enter in any contract. I was kidnapped.
Wait.
Beyond the kidnapping, what is this crazy talk about becoming a hero to save other worlds and becoming an employee?!
N chuckled as she continued: “It seems like, Sir Lark, all this is coming to you as a surprise? What happened exactly to you if I may ask?”
I answered truthfully: “He knocked me out and I woke up when you entered”
We both remained silent for a while.
Then, she started speaking with that other language and, while I don't have any ideas of what it meant, I was quite sure some of those 'words' had to be curses towards that guy called M.
She turned back to me: “Sir Lark, regardless of the means, unfortunately, it seems like you have indeed entered into a contract with the Agency as one of our Heroes. Here is the contract”
As she said that, a paper with letters written in gold appeared. At the very end, there were my fingerprints.
I frowned in frustration and anger.
Clearly that guy placed my fingerprints on this contract while I was out cold!
Frustrated, I asked: “Can we delete it?”
She shook her head sideways feigning care: “I'm afraid not, Sir Lark. This contract is valid to God himself. If you tried to back out of it...Your existence would likely be deleted by God himself”
I don't know this God.
I don't believe in any 'God'.
But I know that just this M guy has enough power to kill me anyways.
I am a realist. I am not strong enough to go against these people.
“What do I need to do?” I asked her.
She beamed as she explained: “It is very simple in essence, Sir Lark. We will simply provide you with potential job opportunities of which you will need to select one within every five years.”
According to what I understood so far, those 'jobs' were to go play hero in some other worlds and save them.
Not my cup of tea.
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
“What happens If I do not select one?”
“You will be forcefully given one, I'm afraid” she said faking concern.
“What if I do not do anything after selecting one?”
“After selecting a 'job', we will be sending you over there. In case that you do not actively save the world, that world will end and you with it due to the danger faced by that world itself. It is true that sometimes, the human in that world manage to save their own world without the help of the summoned hero but it happens less than 0.0001% of the time so I would not bet on it if I were you. After all, if they actively try to summon external help, it is for obvious reasons.” she explained.
To put it bluntly, from now on, I had to go around and save worlds or die.
Even after reaching near immortality.
Even after finally thinking about enjoying myself...
Seeing my unhappiness, she stated: “Of course, you will always be rewarded for your efforts! After saving a world, you are allowed to remain in it for a total of up to ten years without worry and outside of the contract requirements as some kind of break or vacation.”
“Every world also offers some specific rewards to the heroes and those rewards are mentionned within the job descriptions. Also, we guarantee you that they will be delivered!”
“And even beyond that, everything that you earn in that world will remain yours! New skills, new items...All of it!”
I won't lie. This was slightly interesting.
I could not help but ask: “What kind of rewards are offered by those 'worlds' ?”
As one who reached the pinnacle in his own world, I thought of myself as someone who already knew quite a lot but it remains a fact that I never interacted with the 'world' as if it was an existence itself.
Catching on my interest, she stated: “It can be anything, even up to 'divinity' itself”
Divinity...
Now, that was something.
I had no idea what it was and that is why it was worth it.
Considering that this place belonged to a 'God' and 'Divinity' was nearly always associated to 'God', it seemed to be qutie something.
I could not help my greed.
I have lived a long life...for a human... I think...
As such, everything that was 'new' and related to growing stronger could not be anything but interesting. And I could not help but being curious.
She smiled as she asked me: “Would you like me to search for a job that would reward you with 'Divinity'?”
I nodded without being able to stop myself.
I felt like a kid who discovered the existence of a new toy and I wanted to play with it. However, to play, I needed to get it first.
She got up and moved towards her bookshelves to retrieve a bunch of files from here and there. She knew exactly where was what and what it contained. It was quite impressive by itself. It showed that this 'being' called an angel had quite the aptitude to memorize and process things.
She returned to her seat and showed me a dozen papers. Everything on it was written in bronze ink.
What I saw first was that on the right side of them, all of them, there was a letter in rather big size. And it was always the same letter: an “ A “.
I asked her what it meant and she explained it to me: “The letters here are a way to determine the danger level of that world. It goes from F to A with A being the highest. We also have the S letter to classify danger levels that we could not estimate. Of course, being unable to estimate it does not mean that the danger is high nor that it is low, it is simply unknown to us”
For something to be 'unknwon' to them considering the amount of power they already showed me was quite mind-blowing. She might have said that it did not mean a high danger but considering that it was something that their abilities could not figure out, I decided to rule those as extra dangerous.
Beyond that though, she only gave me those of A rank who are, according to her explanation, the most dangerous ones.
Is it really a good idea to give the highest danger level missions to a newbie? Of course not. Not from their viewpoint. Not if they wished to keep me alive and working for them (did they even though?).
So why would she gave me those things?
Was she wishing for my death? Did she estimate that I could deal with those? Or was there another intent?
