8. University of magic - A lonely girl by the lake

I had a good rest. I shouldn’t say things like this, but the sickness of Mr. Smith was really a blessing. Physical education isn’t my thing, and I would rather spend my time on sleeping or learning.

Just that one reason made my morning so much better, but the boy now laying on the bed beside me didn’t share my enthusiasm.

“M-My head… It hurts... “ Roy said, and buried his head into a bedsheet. He didn’t look well, and his voice was weak.

“Who would have thought, that our Roy can get sick too… I’m impressed.” I said, while changing myself into my uniform.

“Don’t be stupid… Of course I can…” he tried to end his sentence, but he started coughing, while moving under the duvet.

“Now, now… You don’t need to speak if you are tired. I will tell the people at school, so you can just rest for now.” after I said those words, Roy just sighed a little, and looked at me.

“Okay, thanks.” he then said, while resting his head on the pillow.

“Don’t worry. I feel a little bad about leaving you here like this, but you know… The school is more important than you.”

“Hey!”

“I’m sorry, it was just a joke. Don’t move so much, when you are sick. Just rest, I’ll try to buy you something at the cafeteria, so you won’t starve in here.”

Roy nodded when he heard me, and I said goodbye to him. After that I left our room, and entered the hallway of our dormitory. I didn’t like walking in this place without Roy, but there weren’t many people in here anyway. Probably because I left later than usual, because I didn’t have my morning classes with Mr. Smith.

For that reason my usual walk wasn’t that bad. Some of the students that didn’t leave yet would just look at me with their usual eyes, but nothing else happened, and after few minutes I finally left the dormitory.

When I did, I was greeted by the sun that was shining on me, and the beautiful garden that was before me. As I still had some time, I decided to walk slowly, admiring the view. Many of the flowers planted in here were really rare, brought here by botanists club.

The garden was big, but the more you walked through it, the more trees there were planted. Finally, when you got to the middle of it it looked more like a forest than a garden. Of course, even the trees here weren’t exactly normal, but I enjoyed taking a stroll in their shadow.

“Hmm? The lake?” I said to myself, as I looked to my left. There, behind high grass was was a big lake.

I remembered Roy telling me, that we would go there after our classes. In the end we didn’t have a chance to come, not that it makes me sad.

There are no people there? Well, I can’t imagine anyone coming here, rather than sleeping. People in here spend too much time on learning, and they don’t have too much time for themselves.

The boys yesterday just had too much free time, because they learned about Mr. Smith’s sickness, when they already went to their classes.

“Well, I still have a lot of time…” I said to myself, and started walking towards the lake.

Spending a moment with the nature could be a good thing, and I still had a lot of time. It’s not like I was in a hurry to meet a friend in the university or anything. Staying in here for a moment is better, than having all those nobles just stare at me.

It took me some time, to walk through the high grass near the lake, but I finally approached the water. When I did, I slowly dipped my right hand into it.

“It’s warm…” I said, to myself, while thinking about jumping into the water. Not that I would do it, but the thought was a nice one.

It was a good place. You could hear the birds singing in the trees, and the sun was nicely reflected on the surface of water. Just staying there was relaxing, and made my brain stop for a moment, which was a really good thing for me.

As I played with the water, I noticed a small hut on the other end of the lake. It looked like a place where you would put tools inside, and near it there was a small boat.

When I saw it, I stood up, and started walking by the shore of the lake towards it. There wasn’t any special reason for that. Maybe I was curious of it, or maybe I was just bored. Maybe I just wanted to have something to do, while I was waiting for the time to pass.

I just walked, while looking around me, and admiring the view. Once in a while I would hear a fish playing in the water, and the water splashing near it. The nature in this world was similar to this from my old world. Of course, there are things like dragons, or other magical beasts, but you don’t see them everyday.

I don’t even see dwarves, and elves very often. The country in which I live in is mostly populated by humans. It’s not like there is some discrimination or anything, but everyone is rather careful of each other, and the interactions between different races are stiff.

Well, I should get my magical licence for now. I will think about exploring the world afterwards. Not like it matters anyway…

“Hmm? And what is that?” I said, as I noticed small footprints on the mud near the water. I was maybe one hundred meters from the hut, and the footprints were leading to it.

Fresh… Small… School boots… Girl? Made recently? More footprints… Older than the one before… Visits this place regularly?

Well, more or less I knew who that person could be, and what she would do here, but I still followed the lead.

A minute later I was standing before the hut. It was made of wood, and painted in a blue color. It wasn’t big, and there probably wasn’t anything interesting inside of it anyway. After I approached it, I circled it around, to make sure that there wasn’t anyone near it.

“So she left already? Well, maybe it’s better for me.” I said, as I sat on the dry ground “Anyway, this place isn’t so bad. I can imagine why she would choose it. There aren’t many people in here, and it’s rather open.”

This girl… Should I confront her? Or should I leave her alone? A little blackmail could help me.

This place I was sitting on. It was dry for a reason. Someone was using fire magic in here. Judging by the footprints a student, and the usage of spells by the students outside of their classes is strictly prohibited.

Maybe a student, that had the same kind of mud on their shoes yesterday, as I have now on my shoes?

I thought about those things, as I looked at the grass to my right. Someone wiped their shoes in it. Judging be the size of flattened grass, the same person that left those footsteps.

Class president.

Well, I can’t really be sure of it. There is only a high possibility that it’s her. Muddy shoes from yesterday… Too many books in the bag… She probably packed her scrolls in it.

And fire magic. We just had it on our lecture. It would be too much of a coincidence, that the person who uses this place for their own training, used fire spells today.

Should I use this information? Or I shouldn’t? She was a little bit of a pain yesterday, and I don’t want her to sniff around me. I will write some of my next tests badly, to make sure that her dad doesn’t catch up, and I will blackmail her into staying out of my way.

As I thought about those things, I smiled. I’m not that stupid.

She is a noble, and a daughter of the principal. It’s not like something like that would work… And her dad has catched up already. Writing my new tests badly would just prove his theory.

Interested in me? Are you sure that you want me to be interested in you?

“Clean - duration five minutes.” I chanted a little spell, and pointed my finger at my boots “You aren’t the only one capable of breaking the rules president.” I laughed a little, when I said this. She should learn this spell, it would make her life easier.

After that I stood up from the place I was standing on, and started moving towards the road leading to the university. Once again I walked by the shore, but this time my shoes didn’t get dirty at all. It seemed as if the mud couldn’t even touch my boots, that were clean no matter where I stepped in.

“Destroy traces of me being here.” I said while walking, and the footsteps I was making now, and the ones I made before started disappearing.

Casting a spell in here was dangerous, and there was possibility that president was just treated better, because she is the daughter of the principal, but I didn’t sense any magic sensors around there. A simple spell like this shouldn’t have any consequences, and I don’t want Emily to see that my boots are dirty. Other students wouldn’t probably care about it, but she would understand that I was in her spot.

It’s not like she would know that I exposed what she was doing, but I don’t want her to get suspicious, and careful around me. I need to have something on her, for our future meetings.

Well, maybe I’m too cautious?

I thought about those things, and after some time I got to the road. If I went straight to the university, I would still make it without any problems.

“Well, I should go now.” I said to myself, and at the same time the spell that was on by boots deactivated itself.
