5. University of magic - A boring lecture?

5. University of magic - A boring lecture?

When we went into our class, we saw just a small auditorium, that could hold up to one hundred people, with rows of seats, and a place for the teacher to speak. We weren’t the first ones to get into the class, so most of the places were taken… Well, the ones that I like the most weren’t.

“Let’s go to the back.” I said quietly to Roy, as we started climbing small stairs to our right.

As we did it, I could feel the stares of the other people inside the class, and they weren’t nice. With every step I could hear their whispers.

“He’s just a commoner…” some girl said quietly, from one of the rows.

“He doesn’t attend the lectures. And I thought that I won’t need to look at him from the morning.” a male voice said.

I was climbing the stairs for only few seconds, but I heard all of their insults. When we finally got to the higher seats, some of the people that were sitting near went down, as if they didn’t want to even be near me, and we were left alone.

“If I could just…” I heard Roy’s angry voice.

“Don’t worry, I don’t mind. And we have a nice view from here anyway.” I replied, and sat on one of the chairs.

Yeah, the places in the back were the nicest. There were few reasons for that. Firstly, no one was sitting behind you. Secondly, they were the highest seats in the auditorium, and you could see everything while sitting in them. And thirdly, not many people decide to sit in them.

Everyone here wants to have the best grades, and there aren’t many slackers.

“Well, I think we can start our classes… I don’t think anyone else will come.” the teacher said, and clapped his hands.

He was old, but it suited the subject we were learning with him. “Offensive magic”, as the simple name suggests, it isn’t a new subject, but rather an old one. Anyway, the teacher looked like one of those wizards you see in fantasy movies. He had a long beard, and a pointy hat. As if he truly wanted to look like a wizards.

Most of the wizards I saw up to now didn’t look like that, they were rather nobles, dressed in theirs expensive clothes.

“The first thing... Where did we end our last lecture? Maybe someone will remind us?” the teacher said, with an tired voice, maybe because of his age, or maybe because he was bored “If I were to choose someone… Oh, there! Those two boys just sitting in the last row on my lecture. First, the red one!”

In the moment he said “the red one”, Roy got up from his seat, and looked at the teacher with a serious look. A look of someone that knows something.

“I’m sorry! I don’t remember!” he said, and bowed a little, making the whole class explode in laughter.

Can’t say I blame him, the lectures in here are a waste of time, and most of them are too boring to even stay awake.

“Well, well… You don’t remember? What about your friend? Can he tell us?” he said those words, and looked at me.

When I heard him, I stood up from my seat, and looked at the teacher. Should I just say, that I don’t know? It wouldn’t be false, because I don’t attend lectures very often. There is no reason to hide it.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

Yeah, there is no reason to hide it, and yet I’m but a commoner. Should I give them another reason to laugh at me?

It’s still early in our first year of schooling. Teacher… Burned sleeves? A little… Fire… Subject with our class? Not sure… No papers ready for the class… Something practical…

More informations… When walked near him… Had a ring of protection from fire… Burned sleeves… Didn’t use it before? Intends to use it now…

We will have the basics of offensive fire spells, judging by the year we are in. Something before that? Textbook… Flow of mana… Flow of offensive mana…

“Hmm, what are you waiting for? Do you not know?”

“No, I was just trying to remember, I’m sorry. Was it on the flow of offensive mana?” I asked, and he smiled.

“Yeah! Yeah! Finally someone who thinks in my class! Splendid!” there was too much happiness in his words, as if noone cared about his classes “Yeah. We had the flow of offensive mana, so for the next step, we will have the basics of offensive fire spells. As you can see, I didn’t prepare any papers for now, and that’s because you need to see this magic, to fully understand how it works.”

I didn’t really listen to him, as I was the one of those that don’t think in his classes. I just sat in my place, and looked at the ceiling.

“Woah, how did you know? Don’t tell me that you attend those classes in secret?” Roy asked, and I just looked at him.

“Just a hunch.” I replied, and he looked at me with amazed eyes.

“Man, you really are a brave one.”

“I wouldn’t say so… Anyway, let’s not speak in class. I don’t want to anger him.”

“Okay.” Roy replied with a quiet voice, and looked at the teacher.

Am I a brave one? Can’t say. It’s not like my deductions are always right, it’s just that I would rather trust my intelligence, than not. If I would to compare it, with the one from my old world, this thing called “intelligence” in here is somewhat different. It is also a statistic, that is used while casting magic, so there might be other differences.

Well, who cares… This time I got it right…

I started looking at the class. Sitting in the last row had its advantages. No one was looking at me, and I could look at everyone. Yeah, I could just stare at them, and they wouldn’t know it…

Wait. Those eyes. Staring at me… I know them. Those big blue eyes.

In the middle of the auditorium, a girl was sitting, that wasn’t looking at the teacher. Instead she was looking at me… Yeah, the class president, Emily. She had a nice name, for someone just staring at me like that..

What does she want from me?

As I thought about this, the boy near her poked her a little, and when he did, she turned around. After that, the same boy looked at me, but for some reason there was anger in his eyes.

Lucas - class vice president. Known for his enormous talent for magic, and powerful lineage. His father works near the king, and is known for his intelligence, and cleverness.

Lucas is loved by girls. Not only is he rich, and talented, by also really handsome. Short blonde hair, and big green eyes. With his beautiful face, one could mistake him for an elf, if not for his ears.

Anger? Jealousy? Problems? Vice president, even when he has a better lineage than class president… She’s smarter than him? Does he like her?

I thought about those things, as he turned around.

Well, it’s not like I care. You nobles are of no interest for me.

Once again I looked at the ceiling, thinking about many things. As I sat there, my eyes got heavy, and after few minutes I finally fell asleep. I don’t remember if I had a dream in this time, but I do remember what woke me up.

“Wow! Wow! This is so cool! Wow!” Roy was shouting near me, but he wasn’t the only one. The whole class was in chaos, as they looked at the teacher.

“One more!”

“Yeah teacher! One more! One more, and we will go!” some girl said, and the teacher smiled.

“Okay, okay… But after that one, the class will end.” he then said, and lifted his hands up. When he did, sparks escaped his hands, but they didn’t fall on the ground. No, they started floating in the air, while rapidly changing their colors.

Fire magic… Air magic… Illusion… Should you show something like that in the middle of class about the basics of offensive fire spells? Are you sure that you are a teacher?

I looked at the class, and most of them, similar to Roy, were really excited. Most of them, but the most prestigious nobles. Among them were Lucas and Emily, that were sitting in their places without moving, as if they didn’t care about the show.

Well, can’t really blame them. I’m sure that in their families there are many mages, that showed them tricks better than this one.

“Okay… That was the last one! Now, go to your next classes.” the teacher said, and some of the students looked at him with sadness “Now, now. Don’t look at me, and go. I can’t just keep you here like that. Move.”

After his words, people started slowly leaving the auditorium. Me, and Roy waited for them to leave, and when most of them did, I approached the teacher.

The thing I wanted to talk with about wasn’t that important. Something about my homework for other classes. I needed more materials, and books, but the library wouldn’t rent me anymore books.

The only thing I could do, was give back some of the books, or ask one of the teachers about what I want to know. Of course, I chose the second option, and someone who teaches offensive magic was the best for it.

It didn’t take me long, but I told Roy not to wait for me. Our next classes were different anyway, and I didn’t want him to be late.

When I was done, I left the auditorium, and walked into the hallway. When I did, I noticed familiar girl that was now looking at me.
