4. University of magic - Gaze of a girl

Would one look at me, they would probably think that I’m a genius. Well, it’s not like they would be wrong, but it’s hard for me to see myself like this, while still remembering my old life. As weird as it may seem, I didn’t think that having a great intelligence was great even once after my memories returned to me.

It’s seems more like a burden to me. My thoughts are sometimes too fast even for me, and my brain needs a large amount of energy. Even if I don’t move, I eat a lot, and I need large amounts of sleep. As I see it, my reasoning skills are the one that have been improved the most. I still might find it hard to remember many things, but I can take care of a little problem like this with brain exercises, and memory techniques.

Intelligence is also the most important stat while casting spells, so for that reason only I avoid casting them when I can. Even a small spell can have big effects when casted with a lot of power, and I don’t intend people to find out what kind of power I have.

“Wow, no matter how many times I see this garden, I’m still amazed.” Roy said, while still walking beside me.

Well, the day was just beginning, and it was the middle of spring. Plants looked really beautiful in this time of the year, and walking in the shadow of those big trees really felt good.

“You seem to really like this path.” I said, and looked at him.

“Well, what is there not to like? To tell you the truth, I never really liked those closed rooms of the university. I prefer it here, open, and free.” Roy replied, and took a deep breath “Don’t you just want to swim, when you see this lake?” he then said, as he pointed at the place behind one of the trees.

There, behind some high grass, a big lake was situated. From where we were standing, I could see some students playing near it, as if they didn’t care that their classes were starting soon.

No, wait… There are too many students there. Are they just lazy? Or they don’t have classes in the morning? No, it can’t be. They wouldn’t go here dressed in their uniforms, if they didn’t have classes.

I stopped for a moment, to take a better look at them. I could recognise some of them, and they weren’t known for their bad behaviour. No, on the contrary, they were all part of one of the best courses in this university.

Other reason… Class… You need students, and teacher… Teacher? Something important? If they are here, they must have learned about it today. Sickness?

I looked at them once more.

No girls. Unpopular? No, they look good. Most of them handsome. Classes only for boys? It must mean...

“Why did you stop? Oh, you are looking at them? I know that you want to play too! Heh, you seem cold, but you are just like us after all!”

“No, just some stupid thoughts...” my reply was true. Sometimes I can’t really understand why I think about those things.

“No need to be shy! When the classes end, we can come here!” Roy just said, as if he didn’t care about what I have to say.

“Well, let’s just continue our walk…” I said, and started moving “Anyway, didn’t you hear about absence of any teacher lately? A one that probably teaches “psychical education for magicians” for boys.”

It might seem like a trivial matter, but boys and girls can’t learn this subject together. Casting magic is different for both sexes, and their bodies need different kind of preparation. That’s why most of the prestigious schools hire someone that is good in teaching only one gender, while hiring another person for the other half. It costs more money, but people hired like this are better, and classes can be split into smaller groups.

Well, there are also other problems, similar to those from my old world. Boys are just stronger than girls, so they shouldn’t have subjects like this together.

“No, why would you ask?” Roy just replied quickly, making my thoughts a little pointless.

“Ah, it’s nothing. Probably I had a wrong idea…” I replied, and smiled to myself. Can’t say that I’m not intelligent, but it doesn’t mean that I’m always right.

After that, we walked like this for another five minutes, while talking about many things. My thoughts are pretty fast, but it doesn’t mean that I’m some superman, or anything. I can still relax, and converse about stupid things.

As the time passed, we finally arrived before the university. Behind white wall, and metal gate was a massive building, bigger than anything other I have ever saw. It looked beautiful, with many big windows, and stairs leading to the enormous entry door.

“Looks like something from a baroque…” I said quietly to myself, while looking at the flowers planted everywhere, and sculptures of ancient magicians.

“We should probably hurry inside! The lecture will begin shortly, and… Wait, you don’t come to lectures!” Roy said, while walking through the metal gate.

“Took you long enough. Anyway, it’s not like anything changed, I don’t intend to attend them… They are a waste of time, and I don’t really need them.”

“So why are you here?! Shouldn’t you be asleep right now?”

“I should, but I have something to talk about with the teacher. One lecture won’t kill me anyway.” I replied, and he looked at me.

“Let’s just hurry!” Roy then said, and we started running towards the university.

It didn’t take us long to go through the big door leading to the inside of the building, and when we did, we were greeted with a sight that really came from a fairytale. On the high ceiling there were golden ornaments, and beautiful paintings presenting the history of this country.

Before us there was a long, white hallway, with doors on the boths sides of it. The hallway seemed to never end, as if it was created with the usage of magic. I looked at the students walking in it. There were hundreds of them, and each one of them was from a noble family.

“Come! We need to go to the higher floor!” Roy shouted to me, and we approached the stairs that were to our right.

It took us some time, but we finally climbed them, and we came to another hallway, that looked similar to the one before, but this time there were less students in it.

“What… T-There is no teacher? Why… Why did we run…” Roy started speaking while trying to catch his breath, when he saw our class still waiting near one of the doors “Why… Why is it happening!”

“Isn’t it good? It means that we got here in time.” I replied, and he looked at me with serious eyes. As if he wanted to tell me something really important.

“I want to pee.”

Yep...

“Well, I think you have enough time to go to the bathroom. Just make it quick.” I reassured him that everything will be alright, and then he started running once again.

I just stared at him for a moment, and then slowly approached my class. I didn’t want to stand too close to them, because I knew that they didn’t like me that much. In their eyes I was just a lowly commoner, and there was probably nothing that could change it.

There were some places to sit near the door, but most of the students were standing anyway. I stood maybe twenty meters away from them, just looking at the ceiling. The painting on it were really beautiful, and it’s not like I could play with a smartphone or anything like that in this moment.

I don’t really miss the human interactions. This person that I am now… Can’t say it’s “me” from my old life, but can’t say that everything is different either. It feels more like a mash of two personalities. In my old life I was just a normal person, not really liked, or disliked. I didn’t have any talents, and I had a boring life.

This new “me” is introverted as hell, and everyone dislikes him. As for talents… Well, let’s say my new self is pretty smart. When you mash those two personalities together something weird must come out.

I thought about this, and looked at the people from my class. They were happily chatting with themselves, and no one was even looking at me. Can’t blame them, who would look at a lowly commoner, that was born to a… Wait… Why is she?

I looked at the girl, that was standing among the students. She had long, black hair, and big, blue eyes. Her face was cute, maybe because of her small nose, or beautiful lips. She was wearing a girls uniform, that looked similar to the boys one, but was more girly, and instead of trousers she was wearing a skirt.

“What a cute girl…” I would think, if she wasn’t a class president that was now staring at me like that. Do you want something from me?

Even when I noticed her gaze, she didn’t look into other direction, as if she didn’t care about what I think.

Is it because I am a commoner? I looked at her once more.

Thin… Doesn’t eat well? Short… Weak… Big bag… A lot of books? Bookworm? Tired… Spends a lot of time learning? Clean clothes. Takes care of herself. Bored gaze. Isn’t interested in the conversation. Mud on shoes… Wasn’t raining for days… Was near water? A clean person… Didn’t clean it… Went today?

“Hey! I’m back! Wait… Where are you starring? Oh, you hungry wolf, just starring like this at a girl. You really are something!” Roy started speaking nonsense as soon as he approached me.

“Don’t be stupid…” I replied, and he smiled a little.

“Anyway, I met someone I know on the way to the bathroom, and you know what he told me?”

“I don’t care…”

“Oh, don’t be like this! He told me that Mr. Smith is sick. We won’t have our physical education tomorrow! Aren’t you happy? We will sleep for a whole hour more!”

Mr. Smith is sick?

“It makes you a little too happy. Are you sure that you wasn’t a sloth in your previous life?” I replied, and Roy laughed a little.

As we were speaking, the teacher finally came, and we started our classes.
