Interlude 2: "Birth of a Mascot"

Interlude 2: "Birth of a Mascot"

Slimes are extremely rare things. At the grade of dragons, even. Except dragons can give birth to more of their kind, while slimes can't. They are conceptually different from the rest of the living creatures. A normal beast's life cycle, including a human's, looks something like: they born, they eats, they grow, they breed, and then they died.

Instead, a slime's life cycle looks like this: it forms, it eats, it grows, it eats, it grows, it eats again, it grows some more... And, well, you get how the thing goes. That's why slimes aren't technically beasts, or monsters, or even spiritual entities. They are... something among those three.

The question is, how were slimes born?

Well, the recipe to create a slime is simple. You need an absurdly dense concentration of mana... Which I believe I've heard of recently. And, you need a soul with a will so incredibly powerful that it practically leaks outside of its owner. And a lot of luck.

Now, the thing with will is that only a soul can store it. And most souls already have wills, because... well, they belong to other minds. So, these minuscule traces of will basically do nothing...

Until said cloud of concentrated mana somehow ends up in the one-in-a-million-chance scenario of creating a soul. As a matter fact, this happens more often than you'd usually think. So, why aren't slimes hoping here and there around the world? Because a soul needs some will to keep it together. If they don't, they regress to the state of... well, simply put, dense mana.

I other words, for a slime to appear, you need an accumulation of mana to form a soul, and the remaining will from a powerful creature, to meet at the exact same time.

Now you understand why slimes are so damn hard to find, right?

There's also a myth that, while it hasn't been proved, is truly interesting. Said myth says that when a slime meets the entity it gained its will from, it will serve it to the end of times...

Of course, that's just a myth.

Suddenly, it noticed that it could notice something. Which made no sense, given how it hadn't noticed a thing ever before.

But that wasn't so important right now.

It was feeling attracted to something.

Although it couldn't feel (yet), it felt something pulling him towards a particular direction. Even though it couldn't sense it was moving, it somehow knew it was getting closer to the thing attracting it.

An emotion, something it had never experienced before, grew on its soul. This was nice. It felt warm and comfy. And the closer it got, the warmer and comfier it felt. It was also starting to feel a sense of belonging, as if it was destined to be with this thing, even if it didn't know what it was. He liked this.

And then it noticed. It was just before it! A little push, and it would be right there...!

It was blowing up in excitement. It had (re?)united with the weird but nice warmness! It couldn't wait to share more and more of its newfound sentience with this... this thing...

No, no, no. Every nice thing needed a name. And somehow, it knew just how to call that warmness. So it put all its emotions in a single push, hoping that it would reach him.

A mass of white-ish, jelly-like substance the size of a basketball jumped at Eugene out of nowhere, just as he turned around to check the weird gurgling noise he had felt before.

"What the fu-?!" His phrase was cut by the newborn slime crashing against his face, before it slid down to his folded arms. And then, as he though of shaking the thing out of his body or squealing like a little girl (or both) a voice that somehow comforted him to his very soul called for him with glee.

~Masteeeeeerrr!!! I found Master!!! Yeeeeeyyy!!!~

Things were about to get weird.
