Chapter 1 - Renaissance

Planet Earth is a oddity in our solar system, and even to an extent of multiple other solar systems, as the life upon it has evolved and expanded far greater then any Planet we currently know of. Life can be found upon all of the nature states that this planet has, that being the sky filled with the clouds which give rain, The ground- covered with the plants which give the benefital oxygen to all of us, and finally the sea.. home to some of the oddest creatures we've ever seen. Speaking of the sea however, a small ship that carried a few crates would sail between the gentle waves, bringing us to the present and to what was currently being planed.

These crates shift slightly as the ship moves along, and the cargo inside them even makes low bellowing noises, but it is all part of a day's work. The waves crash against the ship, but it is strong and pushes through the difficult sea, although not everyone is having the most pleasant moments right now, especially those suffering from sea sickness. However, everyone else seems to be either moderately entertained or downright excited, as some of the passengers have never been to this island before. Despite its lack of animals, at least its more unique residents, they are also going to view a pivotal point in history.

(HP) "Glad you aren't seasick like a few others."

(JC) "It'll take more than the sea to stop our efforts!"

(HP) "Right you are."

Two voices briefly speak to each other, the first sounding masculine and having an accent that makes you aware they come from this region while the other is feminine and seems to have an American accent. They are both veterans in their own right and have both worked moderately with conservation, on the Canary Islands or parts of Northern Africa, respectively. Their names are Hernán Pedro and Juliet Cassani. The former has a face that you wouldn't forget, with stunning hazel eyes and a well-groomed beard, along with slightly darker skin. Meanwhile, the latter has unique blue eyes and her hair tied up so it won't get in the way, and her skin tone is whiter in color. Although they both have the same attire, that of a conservationist, they also share another similarity: their goals are the same, and that is to make sure that this island will be remembered and will house species that are endangered or pivotal for the island's steps in biodiversity.

They have worked together on occasion, but this is the first time they are working on something for this long length of time. The waves splash up and drop water on the deck, and a small rainbow forms for a moment before the water in the air disperses and moves away. Although everyone knows that the sea won't be this wavy as soon as they approach the immediate area, they turn out to be right with their assumption. The waves calm down in time, and it only seems to be a storm further away that is causing the rougher conditions, although the rough conditions will lead to another person that we'll come to know about spew from the inside of the ship and rubbing their eyes, walking to the two Conservationists that seem to have handled through the tough waves.

(MO) "The waves really don't let you get proper sleep, do they?"

(JC) "You can say that again, Martin."

(MO) "At least I can try and get some shut-eye when we get to our station anyway."

(HP) "Heh... There will be time for sleep... after a few things, of course."

Now three people speak, the man who just appeared to the two we just got to know is Martin O'Malley. He is wearing similar clothing to the other two, except his pants are slightly darker. Martin is a newcomer to the beauty and experience of being a conservationist, and like Juliet, he is also from America, In fact, he received the same education as Juliet did in the past, possessing the more common of the eye types, brown. He was beginning to grow a beard, though it was on the softer side and was not likely to fully grow out and be noticeable until a later point in time. He seemed a little tired, due to the long trip from Africa to the island. They had been on the ship for a few days, having picked up the inhabitants they were going to release on the shore from another conservation station where Hernán himself worked.

Martin would shield his eyes with his hand to block the glare of the shining sun and eventually be able to clearly see the island they were headed to. This island was where the new residents would be dropped off, and where the group of conservationists would be staying for the next few months or so. The island's name was Perdido Island, and in legends from the Canary Islanders, it was considered a type of ancient deity due to the odd creatures that were encountered on it. It was called "El sitio de creación," which means "The Site of Creation," and from what they were aware of, that name suited it quite well due to what they believed may have lived there in the past.

(MO) "I'll admit, it's prettier than I imagined and heard about."

(HP) "For a few decades now, plants have been transferred over to grow and essentially take over. They themselves control the extent to which they grow."

(JC) "They didn't want to release any fauna from the mainland there, as they would likely outcompete the island-locked inhabitants planned there."

(MO) "So you're saying these big guys are the first inhabitants to be released?"

(JC) "I told you he caught on quickly."

(HP) "That he does, and you are correct, Vriend. Today will be a pivotal moment."

They would speak amongst each other, and Martin was surprised that he would bear witness to such an important moment in history for this island. Such a pivotal moment was something that all conservationists would see, but nothing could compare to this. The two men would laugh as Juliet seemed a little frightened by a large honk that came from one of the crates, before both of the men were startled by the loud ship horn that blared. Juliet laughed in return. The ship had reached close enough to the island, and they would be ready to get off and set up the proper conditions to ensure that they were safe from anything that these inhabitants may try to pull off. The group of three, along with around 25 other conservationists of various ages, genders, and races, would exit the ship and walk along its rather warm, yet beautiful, sand.

As everyone worked and prepared to set things up, a few workers who came along on the ship would operate the few cranes which were set to move such massive crates onto the shores of this island, the creatures inside sounded quite confused as they were lifred up. Though as soon as they were placed down and heard the coastal waves, they seemed to calm down quickly. There was about 12 Crates and they seemed to be split off into 2 groups, one of the 6 were dropped by the more smoother and sandy side of the shoreline, while the others would be dropped by a slightly rockier side of the coast, this was to try and avoid any possible fighting between the two males of this species.

With a thumbs up from Hernán and a wave from most others, the crates would be slowly opened by the cranes that had exited the ship, being smaller ones that would actually need assistance from a second crate to move the larger males of this species, and would reveal the first few individuals. They looked like seals, but also weren't like that of any seal species at all, as their flippers seemed slightly longer and larger, along with having small digits on the end which seemed to be able to grab things. Their rear ends were also slightly longer, giving them a slightly slender appearence. The Smaller, Female, individuals were the first to get out of the crates, all of them seeming confused to a degree, though the larger males would suddenly appear out of their crates and revealed that this species had a good amount of sexual dirmorphisim. The Males were larger and appeared to have a quite odd pattern along their heads, trickiling down to their necks to an extent.. the way it looked almost looked like hair- the two males having a blueish green like colouration. Though their oddest formation seemed to be two fleshy organs which they could puff out, having various degree of greenish or blueish patterns on it as well, this appeared to have a connection to whether a male gets to mate or not.

this species is known as, scientifically, "Mirounga mermaidus", or are commonly known as "Mermaids". Its quite odd to see the legend of the beautiful half-fish, half-woman, happen to be these Elephant Seal Relatives. Though its likely that those who first discovered them were.. perhaps a little tispy in their development, and thought that the intimidating display a younger individual was showing off were... you get the point.

(MO) "What Giants..."

(HP) "the males can be a little territorial of their harems, so we decided to make sure they had a good distance between eachother.."

The two men would quietly discuss to eachother, as the male on the sandier shorts would huff and honk loudly, the 6 of them with it included beginning to move on the shores before entering the waters, the male was a large body guard and seemed to take guard while the females would swim about. In fact, the other group would do this as well and while it may of seemed quite boring from an outside perspective, the fact they seem to be sticking by the coastline, but simply avoiding the large ship and general area they were in, made it a fact they would stay here. The group would celebrate.. still quietly of course as they began to move all of the items further inward into the island, and the rest of those on the ship and operating the cranes would begin to leave, having a scedule to repeatedly come back here over a period of time.

As they walked towards the compound, they could feel the warmth of the sand beneath their feet, and the sound of waves crashing against the shore filled their ears. The trees provided a much-needed shade, and the breeze that blew through them carried a hint of salt and seaweed. The group couldn't help but stop and take in the surroundings. The beauty of the island was truly captivating. The lush greenery, the crystal clear waters, and the abundance of life that could be seen and heard all around them, it was all so breathtaking.

As they approached the compound, they could see that it was well hidden amidst the trees, almost blending in with the natural surroundings. The fence that encircled the compound was sturdy and secure, and it gave them a sense of safety and protection. The group of conservationists were impressed by the design and layout of the compound. It was clear that a lot of thought had been put into it, from the location to the materials used. They couldn't wait to explore it further and make it their home.

Finally, they reached the entrance and stepped inside with a key that they've been given for a gate, given quite a few in fact. The compound was spacious and well-equipped, It having everything they would need to survive and thrive on the island for how long they were going to be here. There were living quarters, a kitchen, a viewing area where they could observe the outside, and even a small library. The walls were beautiful designs, it wasn't bland but a comforting feeling that would make everyone at home. The atmosphere was welcoming and homely, and the group felt at ease in their new surroundings.

With the excitement of the first inhabitants' arrival, the conservationists got to work. They began unpacking and organizing their belongings, setting up their equipment, and preparing for the challenges ahead. They knew that living on the island would not be easy, but they were determined to make it work. They were all here for a common goal - to protect and conserve the island's unique ecosystem, and with that in mind, they were ready to face whatever came their way.

So, as the sun began to set and unmistakable sounds of the mermaids would honk and holler through the air, and insects would chrip and buzz around the ever darkening area, the group sat down to enjoy a well-deserved meal together. They laughed, talked, and bonded over their shared experiences, and as they looked out at the island, they knew that they were exactly where they were meant to be. They were here to make a difference, and they would not leave until their mission was accomplished.
