9- Baptism

“Your late,” Richard called out, he was in a yellow tunic, Agnes was in white, Catherine was in black, Richard was in Purple, Alison was grey, and even some of the maids were in colours, while others were in grey.

The colours seemed to relate to age, but he couldn’t figure out grey.

“What can I say, I like to make an entrance,” Nikola responded.

Then a few moments later, he heard footsteps coming down the stairs behind him, as he turned, he saw a beautiful girl coming down the stairs in a blue tunic, he was almost enraptured, but he soon snapped out of it. It turned out the girl was Emma; it was a stark contrast to how she normally dressed.

Emma was turning 13, 2 years older than Nikola, and this outfit allowed her to show her developing figure better than her usual workwear.

“How do I look,” She asked him.

“I think you should dress up like that more often.” He blurted out, still slightly enamoured.

This instantly reddened her face, and Nikola could hear his mother and Alison giggle behind his back.

The family soon moved out, and walked to the church, not only was the church so close that the carriages would take longer, but it was also tradition to walk to church during the day of the ceremony.

As the group entered the church, they were ushered to a side extension, this was reserved for nobles and would separate them from the common rabble.

There was chatter in the church throughout, but that soon stopped at the sound of the bells.

*Dong, dong, dong*

The priests walked down the aisle and talked about the creation of the world. Before coming to the main part of the ceremony, the baptism.

Nikola had to go up first with the twins as they were being baptised, while everyone else was here for the communion.

As he was third in line, he saw his brother take the communion, the priest raised a small crystal up in the air, and said a short prayer, “Bless thee, who consume thy body and welcome him into your kingdom.” Then he placed the crystal in the boy’s mouth, “Now go, and be blessed in his name.

The kids, including Nikola, had been told that they must keep the crystal in their mouths and let it dissolve on its own. As Austin was walking back, Nikola noticed an energy wash over him, although he had not experienced this power yet, it was like his body instinctually knew that it was divine energy.

Austin stumbled for a bit but quickly made his way back to his seat. Nikola didn’t realise Alison had taken her’s already and now it was his turn, “Sorry father.”

“It’s ok, my child, divine light, truly a wonderful thing.” He then repeated the prayer for him, and Nikola opened his mouth to receive the crystal.

As he started walking back, he felt the divine energy start to seep into his very being. He sat down in his seat and allowed the power to wash over him. once the crystal melted, he was pulled into his sea of consciousness.

‘Where am I?’ the place looked like deep space, with millions of stars and colourful clouds painting the background, but what stood out to him were two pillars. One said Highly logical personality and the other Highly instinctual personality. They were tied to a chain each, which was tied to a plaque in the middle. The plaque said, dual personality regulator.

The book for the second communion said, that when he enters this place, he should place his hand on the pillar to choose his class, but there were two pillars. He placed his hand on the pillar of his highly instinctual personality.

He had a lot to think about, the modern soldier was better, but the book just said soldier, the modern soldier was still a soldier though, but there was a trait that he missed at the top,

Traits taken under highly instinctual personality will gain a 0.02 percentage point increase to its specialised stat bonus for Physical stats and Perception stat per level.

He released his hand from the pillar and placed it on the other.

He was given the same options, but this time the personality trait gave a 0.04 percentage point increase to its specialised stat bonus for Mental stats and Perception stat per level.

He placed his hand on the highly instinctual pillar, he wanted to go the soldier route anyway but chose the Modern soldier. His next option was the runic engineer, which was the required skill for Railmancer, but he chose to add it to the logical pillar, as it would give move bang for its buck.

As he left the pillar, he was given a prompt,

Do you want to save the secondary choice for next time?”

‘Em, no, I want Runic engineer.’ He pushed his thought of no to it, which he accepted, then he moved on to the logical pillar.

On it, he had the same options, but the modern soldier was greyed out with the word taken next to it, he picked runic engineer and tried to leave.

However, this time he was given a new message, which this time prevented him from taking his hand away.

You have yet to take a primary class for Logical thinker.

‘what’s going on. I already have a primary class.’ He tried to pull his hand but to no avail, so he tried to take the modern soldier, but the pillar prompted him with another message,

This class has been taken by another pillar.

‘What? what? what’s going on?’

‘Then do I have to pick another one?’

Nikola looked over the list, the trait would be counterproductive with the soldier class, but either class had skills that would be consumed by modern soldier, what would happen, does he get both classes, or does he have to switch between them. The book didn’t explain this, or the author didn’t know about this scenario.

He went with tactician and hoped for the best.

His hand was finally able to let go, and as soon as he did, the pillar of his Logical personality disappeared.

The only remaining one was the instinctual pillar, he placed his hand on it, but the skills that hadn’t been greyed out were sub-par, he let go and was given the same option to choose later.

Once he said yes, the pillar disappeared, and he was dragged forwards suddenly, and found himself back in his seat, in the church. He looked around and the person behind him in the queue was just sitting down.

‘Looks like no time at all has passed.’ He wanted to look at his wrist, but refrained from doing so, Nikola had learned that society was highly secretive of their stats, and all research papers never revealed the names of the study subject, unless it was a powerful figure writing his biography during retirement.

The baptism ceremony took over an hour, as there were a lot of people going through it. But the baptism was at the end of the mass, so it was soon wrapped up and people started trickling out. Nikola found out that those in grey weren’t going through the baptism ceremony, it’s probably because they haven’t capped their levels or the right skills.

The family all went to their own rooms to check their updates, Emma following behind Nikola.

Nikola sat on the top end of his bed, “Come sit on the bed,” He gestured to the empty space.

She was about to reject him due to propriety, but he was quickly enraptured with his tattoos, so she sat on it cross-legged as well, they faced each other, as this way it would be the most difficult position to read each other’s tattoos.
