Sylvia Green quietly held a box of powdered milk, cautiously avoiding the villagers as she made her way to the barn.
Unlike the educated youth who had come to the countryside to both educate and work, some less fortunate individuals had been sent for reeducation through labor.
These people were tasked with the dirtiest and most exhausting work, living in the barn and occasionally being dragged out for punishment.
However, not all of them were truly bad people. Sylvia knew that Old Mr. Carter had been wrongfully accused.
A grave injustice, truly a case of the century! How did she know? Because she had studied it in high school textbooks!
This man was a senior official, and every action of his had been part of her history lessons every year! A required historical memory! The events Old Mr. Carter experienced were full of twists and turns, yet he never fell.
Sylvia only knew he had been sent away, but she didn’t know where.
When her friend Chris gave her the materials, it turned out that the old man had been sent to the village for reeducation through labor. It was then that Sylvia understood—everything, even her arrival in this time, had a purpose!
It seemed that the heavens hadn’t just given her the golden touch and the red envelope group—they had given her a golden opportunity, one she couldn’t afford to waste.
Since learning about Old Mr. Carter’s position in the barn, Sylvia had sought ways to approach him and had finally succeeded.
At first, the old man refused to let her get close, worried that she might be implicated. But when he fell ill with a fever, she gave him medicine and food, and after that, he stopped pushing her away.
This time, she had managed to take a box of milk powder from one of Chris’s red envelopes and decided to bring it to the old man.
However, she arrived at the wrong time. There were others in the barn, and she could faintly hear a man’s low voice inside. Sylvia didn’t know who it was and feared being discovered, so she prepared to quietly leave.
The political climate was still unstable, and if anyone found out she was associating with such people, she would have a hard time explaining herself.
Though she knew Old Mr. Carter would eventually clear his name, the villagers didn’t know that.
She had worked hard to secure such an important connection, and if she didn’t wait for the old man to rise in stature, she would bear the consequences, and that would be a bitter price to pay!
“Who’s there?” A voice called out from within.
Despite Sylvia’s careful movements, she was still noticed. The voice came sharply from inside, followed by the sound of someone rushing out.
Stolen story; please report.
A tall young man dressed in military uniform appeared. He paused when he saw Sylvia, who stood frozen for a moment. At that moment, Old Mr. Carter came out, smiling as he patted the young man on the shoulder.
“No need to rush,” Old Mr. Carter said, “This is just a girl from the village. She’s a kind-hearted one, always coming to visit me.”
The young man, realizing his mistake, quickly apologized. “Sorry, I scared you.”
However, despite his apology, his cold expression made him seem distant, and his apology didn’t feel quite warm.
Sylvia was unbothered. She waved her hand with a smile, “It’s alright.”
As she smiled, her face lit up. Despite her healthy, sun-kissed skin, her teeth were strikingly white, and her smile was radiant.
The young man couldn’t help but glance at her again, finding her smile quite charming.
Old Mr. Carter, having lived long enough to understand people, immediately saw that the two seemed to get along well. He smiled and said, “Come over here. Let me introduce you two. Sylvia, this is my friend’s grandson, a few years older than you.”
“Ethan, this is Sylvia. She’s a good girl, so don’t think about causing trouble for her.”
The introduction, though awkward, made both of them blush. Neither of them spoke, but there was an unspoken understanding growing between them.
Old Mr. Carter, observing them, was pleased. The two of them seemed like a perfect match. One was his most cherished friend’s grandson, and the other was a sweet girl he deeply admired.
The old man smiled to himself, watching the two stand together like a couple fated by the heavens.
As the three of them entered the house, talking animatedly, Arden Forster, watching from a distance, was taken aback.
So, the main couple meets this early? She had thought they wouldn't meet until Sylvia went to university!
But seeing how quickly they got along, it seemed the male lead had already forgotten about his fiancée.
Perhaps he hadn’t forgotten, but simply didn’t care for her at all.
The male lead had always disliked the original heroine, but because of their engagement, he had been forced to maintain that relationship. Meanwhile, the original heroine had been the one chasing after him.
Sylvia had learned from the past that a single careless comment from the male lead had caused her to impulsively come to the countryside.
Sylvia truly didn't know that Ethan found her annoying and just wanted to push her away.
Even though the original heroine didn’t like living in the countryside, she was determined to stay, refusing to let her family take her back. The reason? She didn’t want Ethan to think less of her. She wanted to prove that she could stand on her own and earn his respect.
What she didn’t know was that she was just a side character in this story. The male lead was always going to be with the female lead, and no one could take him away. Everything she did was ultimately in vain.
Arden, however, didn’t like the male lead at all. If Ethan didn’t like his fiancée, he should just call off the engagement. Instead, he gave her false hope, all the while secretly having feelings for someone else. Even if he was the male lead, this kind of behavior was unforgivable.
But that was exactly why Arden, as a "supporting" character, could make an impact. Her role was to create misunderstandings between the main couple, pushing them to break up and get back together, each time growing closer, until their love deepened. This was her part to play in their love story, and she had to do it. It was simply a form of entertainment for her, though.
However, Arden would never allow her life to revolve around the male and female leads forever. She wouldn’t accept that.
As for Old Mr. Carter? Arden had no intentions to involve herself with him. He had truly contributed to the country, and he would eventually be reinstated. But that didn’t mean she was going to rely on him.
If the female lead wanted to hold onto Old Mr. Carter, then let her.
But Arden’s true goal was to become a big shot herself.
