C4. I Can’t Melt a Heart Made of Stone

'What did he mean by that?'

Xu Zijin raised her eyelids and looked at Fu Sinian with a dull look on her pale face.

'Am I a sly, treacherous woman in his mind?'

She felt the anger mounting up within her as if to burn her insides into ashes. The poor woman bit her lower lip so hard that her snow-white teeth pierced and sank into the skin and she tasted blood.

"I know that you've always wanted to divorce me. Fu Sinian, I have decided to break up with you. You must be very happy now."

She smiled but her eyes were full of hatred towards him.

'That's enough! I will not continue to love this man.

I'm the apple of my father's eye. If I hadn't lost my heart to him at first sight in the sheltered accommodation when I was five years old, I wouldn't have been a mere supplicant in front of him.

I love him, so I put him above my dignity of human personality.

I love him, so I humbly begged Mu Anan not to wreck my marriage.

I love him, so I broke with my father and insisted on marrying him.

I once thought that he would be moved and fall in love with me as long as I didn't give up, but facts proved that it was pure wishful thinking. Anyway, I can't melt a heart made of stone,' she thought to herself.

Xu Zijin closed her eyes. Everyone in the world had to go through all kinds of hardships. For her, Fu Sinian was the root of her tribulation. The lessons learned at the cost of blood helped to sober her and she lost the courage to love him.

'From now on, I will keep away from you,' she thought with determination.

"Xu Zijin, do you think that I will let you go so easily?" Fu Sinian continued with a sneer, "You are so naïve."

Xu Zijin couldn't help but raise her head and stared at the man in front of her. There was a malicious expression in his eyes.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Then, he tore the divorce agreement up and threw it into the air. The scraps of paper floated in the air and then slowly fell to the floor.

Xu Zijin's heart ached and she felt exhausted. "Fu Sinian, what do you mean?"

Fu Sinian leaned over and approached her. They were so close that Xu Zijin could see clearly the strong hatred in his eyes. She went rigid with shock and subconsciously shrank back.

She was overwhelmed with fear.

"Xu Zijin, I won't divorce you. You are a murderer who killed Anan. Don't expect me to let you go," he said. "From now on, you will be bound up in fetters of the title of Mrs. Fu forever."

'Even though you can be above the law, you can't escape from my control. I'll punish you myself. I will let you suffer a fate totally worse than death,' he thought.

Suddenly, Fu Sinian's eyes softened a little. He stretched out his fingers to pick up the wisp of hair over her cheek and tucked it behind her ear while saying with a gentle smile, "Zijin, this is only the beginning."

Xu Zijin couldn't help trembling and recalling what had happened to her last night. Her heart sank and she felt herself in the grip of despair.

The weather was fine after the rainstorm. Sunlight was streaming into the ward and the woman on the bed was bathed in warm sunshine.

However, Xu Zijin, who lay huddled up in the bed, couldn't feel the warmth of the sun because Fu Sinian's cruel voice rang in her ears again and again and dragged her into a horrible nightmare, though he had left some time ago.

'He wants to lock me in an invisible cage which is called 'marriage' and torture me for a lifetime. He's really a cruel man,' she thought.

A week later, Xu Zijin left the hospital alone and went home. As expected, Fu Sinian wasn't at home.

The next day, she was called to go to the hospital because her father was seriously ill.

She rushed to the hospital and saw Liu Xin anxiously walking up and down outside the operating room.

"Aunt…"

Just as she began to speak, the woman slapped her hard across the face.

Darkness came over Xu Zijin's eyes for a few seconds and she felt a burning pain on her face.

"Why did you come here? Do you want to provoke your father and cause him to die of anger?" Liu Xin questioned angrily.

Although Liu Xin was Xu Zijin's stepmother, she always regarded Xu Zijin as her own daughter and dearly loved Xu Zijin. But now she glared at Xu Zijin with a look of resentment as if she was going to kill this unfilial girl at any time.

Xu Zijin's knees buckled and she knelt down. "Aunt Liu, I know I did wrong in the past. You can scold me and hit me. But first tell me how my father is. Please allow me to see him."

"Perish the thought! I won't allow you to see your father. Do you know who bankrupted the Xu family and caused your father to be critically ill?" Liu Xin asked with rage.

Xu Zijin stopped crying, an uneasy sense of foreboding surging through her. She raised her head and looked at Liu Xin uneasily…
