Chapter 50: Engagement Banquet

One month before the South Aislan Empire's Victory in the Defense of Caroxtel City.

Mu Household. North Aislu Continent.

The date was the 6th Day of the Sixth Month in the Year 735 NCE. The entire Capital City of the North Aislu Continent was bustling in a festive mood. After all, today happened to be a very special day.

It was the 'Engagement Ceremony' of the Son of the Heavens, Mu Yuelong!!

The Mu Household was the Hegemon of the North Aislu Continent. As such, the event of their Eldest Young Master officially exchanging engagement vows with the Sacred Daughter of the Heavenly Spirit Empire was enough to cause celebration throughout the entire continent! Guests and gifts formed an unending line at the gates of the Capital City as everyone worth anything in the secular and martial world arrived to bless the couple.

While the entire city was passionate beyond limits, the place where most of the celebration was centred was within the Mu Household compounds.

The main gates of the Mu Household saw a line of carriages and vehicles that were not inferior to the ones outside the Capital City. Of course, it went without saying that guests waiting in line here were, without a doubt, some of the most important people in the entire world! Powerful practitioners, politicians, royalty, influential business people… it was an endless galore of authorities and elites.

These people, who usually never had to wait for anything or anyone, were now found submissively waiting outside the gates of the household while clutching onto their invitations with excited expressions on their faces. And how excited they were! After all, they had been invited to witness a true historical moment!

An engagement between the Son of the Heavens and the Sacred Daughter of the Heavenly Spirit Empire who also happened to be its Crown Princess!

Weren't these just two of the strongest factions in the world entering into a marriage alliance with each other!? Why wouldn't it be a historical event!?!

As excited as the invited ones were, they were also equally terrified. They constantly directed their subordinates to re-check the gifts that they had brought and inwardly worried whether they would be worthy enough to be presented at such an event.

Two Sovereign Forces… Just what sort of treasures had they never seen before? Chances are, what these people considered as extremely ordinary, was, in fact, a treasure straight out of a fairy tale for the common people. As such, an equal amount of excitement and anxiety tugged at the hearts of these guests. These feelings only served to intensify as they slowly entered the gates one after the other.

In the Inner Compound of the Mu Household.

"HAHAHA!!" A boisterous laughter broke the tranquil serenity of the courtyard and drew the eyes of everyone toward a certain elderly figure. "Where is my good grandson!? Where is Xiao Long?!! Huck--!! His excited shouts were followed by a short gasp of pain as a silver-haired elderly woman beside him elbowed his ribs.

Seeing her husband's face crumple in pain, the elderly woman snorted. "Look at you. Is this how you act at your grandson's most important occasion!? Not a trace of civility or class." She admonished.

Turning away and ignoring her husband's wronged looks, she wore a proud smile on her face and gently called out. "My sweet grandson, quickly come out and greet your grandmother."

She did not have to wait long. Soon, a tall, dashingly handsome youth appeared in her sights. Seeing his slim, well-built figure dressed in traditional attire made out of the finest of silks, her eyes quickly blurred with tears. She said in a small, sobbing voice, "You look so much like your father…"

Yuelong, immaculately dressed and infinitely charming, appeared before her and sought her blessings. "Grandmother. Grandfather. It's great to see you two in good health. Xiao Long has missed you these past few months." He then kowtowed.

"Good child. Good child," Grandmother Mu appreciated, accepting her grandson's kowtows. Her eyes were now positively streaming with tears as her mind recalled memories of the past.

"Tch, kid, you seem to be inheriting more and more of your father's handsomeness with each passing day," remarked Grandfather Mu, his eyes similarly red with tears. However, being a man, he could not allow him to cry as easily as his wife.

"It is all grandfather's generous gifts," Yuelong cheekily replied.

Hearing his reply, Grandfather Mu broke into uproarious laughter. "HAHAHA!! That's true! Your father's looks all come from me after all!" He then cheekily put his arm over his grandson's shoulder, pulled his close, and quietly whispered into his ears. "Go on then. Tell your grandfather the truth. How many chicks have you already seduced?"

"This…" Yuelong showed a difficult expression on his face and sent an imploring look toward his grandmother.

Grandmother Mu, being quite the powerful cultivator herself, clearly heard her husband's words. Cracking her knuckles, she asked with a mirthless chuckle. "Old Mu, do you want to die? Stop tainting my pure grandson with your filthy ideas."

Grandfather Mu 'heroically' backed away and 'righteously' declared. "Yuelong, remember! A true man must have at least three wives and six concubines! Look at your father. He's a man among men!"

A short 'baam' was heard and Grandfather Mu pitifully fell to the ground while clutching his head. Painful whimpers escaped his lips.

Having dealt with the source of corruption, Grandmother Mu gracefully turned and levelled a kind gaze toward her grandson. With an angelic smile on her face, she advised, "Xiao Long, don't listen to your grandfather's nonsense. A person's emotions are limited. Oftentimes, it is difficult for a man to even devotedly love a single woman."

"Of course, I'm not saying that there are no exceptions to this. Why, your father is an exception himself. However, as a woman myself, I would prefer it if my man only had no one other than myself by his side. This, in my eyes, is the most sincere and fulfilling expression of love."

"Again, exceptions exist," she shook her head. "In the end, do as you wish. But remember to do it sincerely. There is nothing more terrible than doing something just for the sake of it."

Yuelong wholeheartedly listened to his grandmother's advice. He then deeply bowed and replied, "Rest assured, grandmother, I plan to remain sincere and loyal."

"As long as you don't become like your father, I can rest assured," Grandmother Mu said with a weary smile. She then rubbed her forehead with a troubled look and mumbled to herself, "I swear; just how did I come to raise such a philanderer? Seventeen wives, my goodness. How does that boy manage?"

While he had clearly heard her, Yuelong acted like he hadn't heard anything. His father's romantic successes were a mystery to everyone, including himself. Rest assured, Yuelong planned to never involve himself in such a mess ever.

With their highly emotional initial meeting completed, the set of grandparents and grandson soon leisurely chatted about other topics. A while later, they were joined by the other members of the Mu family; and very quickly the pair of grandparents found themselves buried underneath an army of their grandchildren.

The two elders were beyond happy.

Meanwhile, guests continued to filter into the Mu Household. The main ceremony was still quite some time away resulting in no particular hurry. Gifts were collected, drinks were shared, and everyone was accommodated and entertained.

Time passed and noon approached. Just as the sun was about to occupy the highest position in the sky, a shrill siren echoed and the startled guests found themselves gazing up at the sky.

In the distance, a thin snake-like was seen flying towards them at a great speed. As it neared, the identity of the snake-like apparition was proven to be a set of flying coaches pulled by a majestic-looking flying creature.

Yuelong, who stood beneath one of the outer pavilions, looked at this scene with a pleasant smile on his face.

"Eldest Cousin, what is that?" One of his younger cousins, a pudgy-looking boy, questioned him with an innocent gaze.

Ruffling the cute boy's hair, Yuelong explained kindly. "That is the world-famous 'Flying Phoenix Carriage.' It is the symbol of the Royal Family of the Heavenly Spirit Empire."

"That means…" An older cousin quietly muttered with envy colouring his voice.

"The Crown Princess has arrived," Yuelong completed his sentence.

Yuelong's wife-to-be, the Sacred Daughter of the Heavenly Spirit Empire, and its Crown Princess, Feng Tianfei had arrived at the Mu Household.
