Dad places his hand on my shoulder taking me out of my internal crisis. “Sorry about that, she really idolizes you. My name is Darren. This is my daughter Alice.”
Professor Oak lets out a laugh “Think nothing of it. It happens more often than you’d think.” Oak then looks at me and holds out his hand “Let’s try that again. I’m Professor Oak and this is my colleague Professor Elm. It’s a pleasure to meet you Alice.”
I take a moment to collect myself “It’s an honor to meet you Professors. Thanks for coming all this way to meet my pokemon.”
Elm then speaks up “It was no effort on our part. We were both teleported here.”
The Alakazam I forgot was even here starts grumbling. Oak turns around and takes a pokeball off his belt “Sorry about that old friend. You can take a rest now.” The Alakazam disappears into the pokeball in a flash of red light. Oak turns back to us “Sorry about that. He teleported me here all the way from my lab.”
Nurse Joy then walks up to us “Excuse me we have a room set up for you all. Please follow me.”
All of a sudden I can feel all the eyes on me from the large crowd behind me as I follow Joy and the professors into the back of the pokecenter. After walking through a long hallway we entered a large room. Within is a large platform surrounded by a bunch of what I assume to be scanners. A bundle of cables ran from the scanners to a line of monitors. Oak checks the platform and scanners while Elm turns on all the monitors.
“Looks like they set everything up for us.” Oak says. Elm turns to him saying “Everything is up and running. We’re ready to begin.” Oak turns to me saying “Whenever you’re ready Alice sends out the first pokemon.
I reach down to my belt grabbing Gemini’s ball and release him over the platform. Gemini lets out a happy cry as he’s released. “This is Gemini, my cutiefly. He’s a fairy and bug type pokemon. He is capable of evolving into a pokemon called ribombee. He has an ability called shield dust. It protects him from any secondary effect a move has. His line also has the ability to sense the auras of people and pokemon.”
Both Oak and Elm come closer to get a better look at the tiny pokemon. Clipboard in hand the professors begin writing down notes. Looking over to see what they’re writing I’m taken aback at their handwriting. Can they even read that? It's completely illegible.
“It’s so cute” Elm says
“It’s one of the smallest pokemon I’ve ever seen. Alice have him stay right there. We’re going to need measurements.” Oak says as he walks over the computers. With a press of a button the Scanning machines come to life with a whirring sound. After a couple seconds the scanners power down.
“That’s it? I was expecting much more” I say confused.
Elm walks up to me “Yep, miracles of modern science. The scanner records all biological data along with typing and known moves. However, we would need a lot more data to create a proper entry for the pokedex. We may contact you in the future for more data. If he evolves please call me. I would love to see this ribombee you spoke of. I’ll give you my contact information when we’re done.”
Over by the monitors Oak calls out “I’ll give you mine as well. Seeing new pokemon is the best part of being a pokemon professor.” Looking at Oak I see Gemini floating over Oak's shoulder looking at the monitor seemingly curious about what the professor is doing. Oak chuckles and pets Gemini on the head with his finger. “Inquisitive little fella isn’t he.” He says as Gemini leans into the petting. Oak says to me “We’re ready to move on now.”
I nod and release my next pokemon. In a flash of red light Twinkle appears. The professors let out ohs and ahs as Twinkle’s crystals shimmer and shine under the lights. “This is Twinkle, my carbink. Carbink is a rock and fairy type pokemon. Twinkle has the ability clear body. It prevents him from being weakened by moves. Carbink are born underground in places with high pressure and high temperatures. They can sleep for hundreds of millions of years.” As I finished I realized I got carried away and gave away too much information then what I could learn on my own. I hope the professors didn’t realize I know more about my pokemon than I’m letting on.
Unfortunately Elm asked me “um Alice how did you learn all this?”
I try to figure out how to answer. All of a sudden an idea comes to me. “My teacher told me. She’s a powerful psychic and fairy type capable of telepathy. She taught me all sorts of stuff about fairies.” Thank you Hatterene.
The professors look at me in surprise. Oak says “That must have been a powerful pokemon. Only very powerful psychic types can speak with telepathy. Based on it’s type, am I correct in assuming it’s a gardevoir?”
Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.
I respond “Actually no. She’s a pokemon species known as a Hatterene. The next pokemon I’m showing is her daughter and the first stage of her evolution line.”
“How fascinating.” Oak then turns to Elm “How are the scans coming along?”
Professor Elm replies “Just another minute before it’s done.”
After the scan finishes carbink moves away from the machines and begins exploring the room. I prepare to release Rapunzel, but before I do I tell the professors “Before I release my next pokemon there is something you must know about her first. She is the daughter of my teacher I told you about. Her name is Rapunzel, and she is a hatenna. Her kind are powerful Empaths along with the rest of the evolutionary line. She can feel emotions as sounds. Powerful emotions can be quite loud for her. She is training to increase her tolerance for powerful emotion, but still please try to keep any excitement in check.” As I say this I release Rapunzel into the middle of the platform telling her to stay where she is.” As I look back at the professors I see both of them trying to keep their excitement in check. Professor Elm seems to be having quite a hard time with this as he starts the scan. He seems to have a weak spot for cute pokemon.
“As I was saying before, this is Rapunzel, my hatenna. She is a pure psychic type along with her evolution hattrem. It is only after evolving into a hatterene will she gain her fairy typing. She has the ability magic bounce which reflects certain moves. My teacher says it’s really rare for a hatenna to be born with magic bounce and that She has the healer ability. The protrusion on the end of a hatenna’s tail is what allows them to sense emotions.”
Oak tells me “I must say Alice, I’m very interested in meeting your teacher. Do you mind introducing me? I’d love to pick her mind on a few subjects.”
“I’m not sure she would be willing. She’s very reclusive, but for you I’ll ask next time I see her.” I say.
As the scan goes on Rapunzel starts to grow impatient and begins tapping her foot on the ground. Luckily for her the scan finishes soon. Rapunzel hops off the platform heading over to play with Twinkle.
“Okay, last but not least. Come on out Coraline.” I say while looking down at my shadow. I hear an echoing “kukuku” as the mimikyu emerges from my shadow.
“A pikachu?” Oak says confused. Both professors are looking at Coraline nuzzling into my leg with fascination.
“Nope.” I say “This is Coraline, my mimikyu. Mimikyu disguise themselves as pikachu so it can find a friend. They are generally very friendly and loving as you can see.”
“This has to be the strangest pokemon I’ve ever seen.” Oak says “What does it look like under the costume?” Upon hearing this Coraline hides behind me, her fake head peeking out staring at professor Oak.
With urgency I say “Please don’t try looking underneath her costume! Seeing a mimikyu’s true form is fatal to humans.”
Both professors' eyes bulge after taking in what I just said. I quickly add “Still mimikyu are perfectly safe. They will actively fight to prevent someone from looking. Even if you wanted to, no mimikyu would allow you to see their true form willingly. A scan will be fine though.”
Oak sighs and scratches the back of his head “Let's hope Agatha doesn’t find out about this. She’d probably scour the entire world to obtain one.”
“Now then where was I? Mimikyu is a ghost and fairy type. It has an ability called disguise. It allows mimikyu’s costume to take the first hit leaving them unharmed. Mimikyu disguise themselves as pikachu due to pikachu’s popularity.”
I led Coraline to the scanner where she then hops onto the platform. As I step away from the scanner Oak walks up to me saying “With what you told us about mimikyu it will definitely be labeled a black level pokemon.”
I look at Oak confused. “What’s a black level pokemon?”
Oak answers “A black level pokemon is a pokemon species deemed too dangerous for a regular trainer to train. A trainer needs a special license or special permission from the league to have a black level pokemon on their team.”
“They won’t try to take Coraline away will they!?” I say concerned. Coraline looks shocked by what I said. Rapunzel looks to me definitely feeling the fear emanating from me, with Gemini and Twinkle looking at Oak.
Oak reassures me “You have nothing to worry about. I see how fond Coraline is of you. There is no reason such a bond should be broken. I say this not as a professor, but as a trainer. I’ll make sure you get permission from the league for having mimikyu. If anyone at the league makes a fuss they will be dealing with me.”
“Thank you so much professor Oak!” I say gratefully.
Oak lets out a chuckle “Think nothing of it. You don’t realize it but you’re most likely one of the leading experts on the fairy type in Indigo.”
I looked at Oak surprised “How is that possible?”
“There are currently no real fairy specialists in Indigo. Research into the fairy type and its applications are still in its infancy. You’ve also been taught about the fairy type by a fairy type pokemon. There is probably no one in Indigo that understands the fairy type more than you do.”
“Wow, that’s a lot to take in.” I say.
Professor Oak laughs and says “Take your time.” Oak then looks over to professor Elm “How’s the scan coming along.”
Elm replies “I’m not sure the scanner isn’t sensing anything besides Mimikyu’s costume.”
Oak walks over to the monitors “Probably due to its physiology as a ghost type. I’ll ask to borrow some equipment from Agatha. We can get another scan at a different time. We already have enough data to last a while. Just be sure to add extra warnings and directions on the mimikyu file. Wouldn’t want to have any incidents with any nurse Joys.”
Oak walks back over and asks “I’m a bit curious. Alice if you don’t mind me asking where did you find these pokemon? It clearly isn’t anywhere in Indigo that I know of.”
Before I even have a chance to respond Dad calls out “Family Secret!”
I’ve forgotten Dad was even here. He’s been leaning on the wall by the door the entire time.
Oak lets out a sigh “Those two words have been the bane of every researcher. Welp, if you ever change your mind you’ll have my number.”
Oak looks down at his wristwatch “Would you look at the time. Daisy must be wondering where I am.” Oak proceeds to hand me a card “Here’s my number. Send me a message when you get the chance. If you ever need anything give me a call.”
Elm rushes over and begins rummaging through his pockets eventually pulling out a crumpled paper “And here is my number. Call me if any of your pokemon evolve or if you have anything to share. There is no time I’m not available.”
“Thank you Professors, it's been an honor.” I say.
Oak smiles “The honor is all ours Alice. It was a pleasure meeting you and your pokemon. I know you’ll make it far.”
I shake hands with both professors, before they step back grabbing pokeballs. Elm releases a kadabra, Oak releases the alakazam from earlier. Just before leaving Oak said “Oh, Alice I almost forgot. Watch out for the press. Elm and I didn’t make the most discreet entrance.” Both professors then vanish.
I return my pokemon and me and Dad leave the room. As I open the door back to the lobby I’m immediately overwhelmed. I walk into a wall of cameras and flashing lights. The Joys and chansey try in vain to contain the crowd of reporters. They begin yelling out questions about who I am, and why I was with professors Oak and Elm, but mostly Oak. I let out a sigh. I’m too tired for this.
