Chapter 5: Shadows in the Deep

Chapter 5: Shadows in the Deep

The Catacombs stretched out before them like the belly of a beast, it's cold, damp corridors winding deeper into the earth. Each step echoed, the sound swallowed by the thick darkness that seemed to press in on them from all sides. The air was stale, thick with the scent of decay, and the distant whispers that they heard before grew louder the further they ventured. Ancient runes carved the walls, glowing faintly with magic from a bygone era. They pulsed with an ominous energy, as if warning them to turn back.

Kalsei walked ahead, flipping the Shattering Blade idly in his hand. "You know," he said, glancing back at Seikan, "for a place filled with ancient curses and creepy ghost vibes, I expected more... I dunno, drama? Some spooky music, maybe a jump scare or two?" He wiggled his fingers in the air, mockingly.

Seikan's gaze remained locked ahead, his senses on alert. "Focus, Kalsei," he said coldly. "You've seen enough already to know this place is dangerous. Don't let your guard down."

Kalsei shrugged, flashing a grin. "Yeah, yeah, I get it. It's all doom and gloom for you." He lowered his voice mockingly. "Don't let your guard down, Kalsei. Something's always lurking in the shadows, Kalsei.' Geez, lighten up, Seikan. It's not like we haven't kicked every monster's ass so far."

Seikan's eyes flickered over to Kalsei, his expression unreadable. "Monsters don't care about banter. You can talk when we're out of here alive."

Kalsei opened his mouth to retort but was interrupted by a sharp scraping noise echoing through the corridor. Both of them froze, their eyes immediately scanning the area.

Seikan's hand went to the runes he was preparing, his fingers glowing faintly. "Do you hear that?" His voice was low, dangerous.

Kalsei's golden eyes flickered in the dim light as he peered into the darkness. "Yeah, something's moving." He straightened, adjusting his grip on the Shattering Blade. "Sounds big."

The noise grew louder, the scraping turning into a low rumble. A moment later, the ground beneath their feet trembled.

Enemy Encounter: Bone Golem Level: 6 Health: 800 Abilities: Bone Crush (Lvl 4): A powerful smash that deals massive damage and stuns the target. Summon Bones (Lvl 3): Summons skeletal warriors from the surrounding area to assist in combat. Regeneration (Passive): Slowly regenerates health over time as it absorbs nearby bones.

A pile of bones in front of them shifted as they rattled to life, moulding themselves into a large skeletal creature. Its frame towered over them, easily twice their height. Its joints creaked as it moved, the bones scraping against each other. Green orbs glowed in the empty sockets of its skull, and it let out a deafening roar, its bony fingers flexing, eager to crush them.

Kalsei's grin returned, though there was a nervous edge to it. "Well, that's more like it. Looks like we've found a boss."

Seikan's fingers moved quickly, tracing runes into the air. "Don't get reckless. It regenerates."

Kalsei darted forward, his agility kicking in as he zigzagged across the stone floor. The Bone Golem swung a massive arm at him, but Kalsei rolled under it, coming up behind the creature and slashing at its back. The Shattering Blade hummed as it connected, sending a shockwave through the golem's bones.

"Seriously, I've seen skeletons in my biology class move faster than you!" Kalsei taunted, darting away before the golem could retaliate.

The Bone Golem turned, its green eyes locking onto Kalsei, and let out another roar. It slammed both fists into the ground, causing the bones around the room to shift and rise. Skeletal warriors began to crawl out from the ground, their empty sockets glowing faintly.

Seikan's eyes narrowed. "I warned you."

He activated Rune of Decay, dark energy spreading across the floor beneath the summoned skeletons. Their movements slowed as the rune sapped their strength, their brittle bones beginning to crack under the pressure. Seikan's face remained cold and focused as he extended his hand, releasing a burst of dark energy toward the golem.

The Bone Golem shuddered, its green eyes flaring brightly as it swung a fist toward Seikan. The impact of the blow sent cracks spreading through Seikan's hastily conjured barrier, but it held long enough for him to dart backward.

Kalsei, taking advantage of the distraction, activated Blink Strike. His form flickered as he teleported in front of the Bone Golem, slashing upward with the Shattering Blade. The creature let out a bone-rattling screech as its skull cracked under the force of the blow.

"Getting tired yet?" Kalsei taunted, though his breathing was heavy. "I've got all day."

Seikan's fingers moved rapidly, summoning Adaptive Shackles. Dark chains erupted from the ground, wrapping around the golem's legs, slowing its movements. The Bone Golem roared again, but the chains held firm, sapping its strength.

Kalsei darted forward once more, delivering a quick slash to the golem's side. "This thing is tougher than it looks."

Seikan's voice remained calm. "Weaken it first. It regenerates too fast."

Kalsei nodded, grinning despite the intensity of the battle. "Yeah, yeah. Always the strategist."

Just as they were beginning to get the upper hand, the Bone Golem let out another roar. Its eyes flared bright green, and it slammed its fists into the ground once more, causing a wave of bones to surge toward them. Kalsei barely had time to react as the bones struck him, knocking him back.

"Okay, that hurt," Kalsei groaned, rolling to his feet. "Damn I'm tired. We should have rested before this." Kalsei's body was starting to ache and he realized they had not stopped since they got here.

Seikan's fingers traced another rune in the air, this time activating Rune of Binding. The shadows coiled tightly around the Bone Golem's body, restricting its movements even further.

The Bone Golem began to thrash wildly, but its movements were sluggish now, its strength sapped by Seikan's dark magic.

Kalsei saw his opening. "Time to finish this!" he called out, charging forward. He activated Rift Strike, sending a pulse of energy through the air. The shockwave slammed into the golem, cracking its bones. Kalsei followed up with a powerful slash from the Shattering Blade, cleaving the creature's skull in two.

The Bone Golem let out one final roar before crumbling into a pile of bones at their feet.

Bone Golem defeated. 1500 experience points earned.

Kalsei slipped the necklace on and grinned at Seikan. "This could come in useful." A small yawn escaped him. "I could do with a nap right now."

Seikan, though equally exhausted, remained composed. "Don't get comfortable yet. The real source of the curse is still ahead."

Kalsei wiped the sweat from his brow and grinned. "Yeah, yeah. But come on, you must be tired too by now."

Seikan didn't answer, his gaze shifting to the deeper part of the Catacombs. Something dark, something ancient was waiting for them. He could feel it.

The ground beneath them began to tremble slightly. A low growl echoed through the chamber, and Kalsei's grin faltered.

"What now...?"

Before either of them could react, the walls cracked and exploded as a massive figure charged out of the darkness. A towering Minotaur, its skin thick and mottled, its eyes blazing with a fiery red glow, stormed toward them with terrifying speed.

Without warning, the Minotaur brought its massive fist crashing into Kalsei's chest, with an impact that was so forceful, it left a delayed shockwave, that sent him flying to the opposite end of the room, slamming into a stone wall with a sickening crack. Kalsei slid down the wall, smearing it with his own blood as he slumped to the ground, unconscious.

"KALSEI!" Seikan's voice tore through the chamber as he stared at his friend's crumpled form. The sight of Kalsei's limp body, the blood on the wall, sent a white-hot surge of rage through him.

Seikan's cold green eyes darkened, turning black like the void itself. Ink-like tears began to stream down his face, the inky substance spreading rapidly across his skin, covering him in a shadowy, unnatural sheen. It was as if he were dissolving into the darkness itself, becoming something far more terrifying. The ink continued to spread, wrapping around his arms, legs, and torso until every inch of his body was consumed, making him look less like a person and more like a walking shadow.

Seikan's once black eyes now burned bright white, glowing with an intensity that filled the chamber with an eerie light. His power surged, growing exponentially as the runes on his body pulsed with dark energy. The air around him crackled, thick with magic. Even the Minotaur, which had been so eager to crush him moments ago, took a hesitant step back, sensing the sheer power that radiated from Seikan's transformed state.

Seikan's voice, when it finally came was barely recognizable-low, guttural, filled with unbridled rage, "You shouldn't have touched him."

Without waiting for the Minotaur to charge, Seikan's hands shot forward, dark energy coiling around his fingers like black fire. He activated Rune of Decay, but this time, it was far more potent. The dark energy erupted from the ground, encasing the Minotaur in an impenetrable barrier of shadow. The creature let out a roar of pain as the rune sapped its strength, the shadows gnawing at its flesh, draining its vitality.

The Minotaur tried to break free, swinging its massive fists toward Seikan in a desperate attempt to crush him, but Seikan's movements were impossibly fast. He was no longer the calm, collected strategist. He was a force of pure destruction. With a flick of his wrist, Seikan unleashed Adaptive Shackles, and dark chains erupted from the floor, wrapping around the Minotaur's limbs binding it in place.

The Minotaur struggled violently, but the chains only tightened, pulling it down to its knees. Its red eyes blazed with fury as it let out a deafening roar, but Seikan's face remained impassive, his glowing white eyes locked onto the beast as if it were nothing more than a plaything for him to destroy.

"You will suffer," Seikan whispered, his voice laced with cold, murderous intent.

With another flick of his wrist, Seikan activated Rune of Binding, and the dark energy that surrounded the Minotaur began to compress. The air itself seemed to tremble under the pressure of Seikan's power. The shadows twisted and coiled tighter and tighter around the Minotaur, crushing its bones with sickening cracks. The creature let out a desperate, agonized roar as its body was slowly being crushed under the weight of Seikan's magic.

Still not satisfied, Seikan stepped forward, his fingers tracing a new rune in the air. Rune of Destruction- a powerful, forbidden rune, one Seikan had only theorized about but never dared to use. Until now. His glowing white eyes flared even brighter as the Rune activated, dark energy swirling around him like a storm.

The Minotaur, now on the brink of death, could do nothing but watch as the rune formed above it. It let out one final terrified roar, but it was too late. Seikan brought his hand down, and the rune exploded with unimaginable force.

The dark energy consumed the Minotaur entirely, ripping it apart from the inside out. Bones shattered, flesh was torn, and within seconds, the creature was nothing more than a pile of blackened ash.

Seikan stood still for a moment, breathing heavily as the ink-like substance covering his body slowly began to fade, retreating into his skin. His glowing white eyes dimmed, returning to their cold green hue but the rage still simmered beneath the surface.

He turned, his eyes locking onto Kalsei's crumpled form against the wall. For a split second, Seikan's cold exterior cracked, worry flashing across his face. He rushed over to Kalsei, kneeling beside him. Blood pooled beneath his friend, and Seikan's hand hovered over Kalsei's chest, his fingers trembling slightly.

Seikan's voice was quiet, and laced with emotion. "Kalsei..."
