Chapter 13: Core Strategy

Chapter 13: Core Strategy

The ancient guardian stood before them, its stone limbs groaning as they shifted, as though the creature was awakening after centuries of stillness. The chamber trembled slightly with each movement of the behemoth, dust falling from the ceiling in lazy drifts. Its glowing eyes locked onto the trio, and in that instant, it felt like the temperature dropped several degrees.

Kalsei tightened his grip on the Shattering Blade, a rare seriousness taking over his features. "Okay, so... maybe grabbing the relic isn’t gonna be as easy as I thought."

Seikan’s eyes narrowed, already assessing the situation. "This guardian won’t go down easily. Its stone body will absorb most of our attacks unless we can find a way to weaken it."

Steph, standing slightly behind the two, muttered dryly, "And here I thought the wolves were bad. This thing looks like it could flatten us with one hit."

The guardian's glowing eyes flashed, and with a slow but deliberate motion, it raised one massive arm. A deep rumble echoed through the chamber, like the groan of mountains shifting, as the arm swung down toward them.

Kalsei leapt back, his agility allowing him to dodge the crushing blow by inches. The ground where the guardian’s fist landed cracked and buckled, sending shockwaves through the floor that knocked Steph off balance. She caught herself just in time, her staff glowing faintly as she prepared a spell.

"Whatever we do, we need to spread out!" Seikan barked, already moving to the side to avoid another attack. His voice was calm, but the urgency was clear. He wasted no time tracing a rune in the air, dark energy crackling around his fingertips. "Adaptive Shackles," he muttered, his eyes fixed on the massive creature.

From the ground beneath the guardian’s feet, dark chains erupted, coiling around its legs. The chains tightened, their dark energy sapping some of the creature’s strength, but the guardian barely flinched. Instead, it raised both arms and brought them down in a wide arc, attempting to crush Kalsei and Seikan at the same time.

Kalsei blinked out of sight, using Blink Strike to teleport behind the creature just as the massive stone fists collided with the ground. He landed in a crouch, immediately lunging forward to strike at the back of the guardian’s legs with his blade. The impact sent a shockwave rippling through the creature’s body, but again, the thick stone absorbed most of the damage.

"Damn, this thing’s tougher than it looks," Kalsei grunted, rolling to avoid another strike.

Steph had already positioned herself further back, her staff raised as she muttered an incantation under her breath. A soft, green glow spread from her Staff, wrapping around Kalsei and Seikan in a warm, healing light.

"Don’t go getting yourselves killed just yet," she called out, though her voice was tinged with more concern than she let on. Her dark eyes flickered with frustration as she watched the guardian lumber toward Kalsei, seemingly unfazed by the attacks.

"Thanks, Steph!" Kalsei called out, giving her a quick wink before darting back into the fray. "But seriously, any ideas on how to break this thing down? ‘Cause right now, I’m just making it mad!"

Seikan, keeping his distance as he observed the guardian’s movements, frowned. "It’s too heavily armored. We’ll need to find a way to destabilize its core."

"The core?" Steph repeated, her staff glowing faintly with dark energy as she prepared her next move.

Seikan nodded, his eyes locked on the faint glow coming from the guardian’s chest. "There. That light—its power is concentrated there. If we can focus our attacks on the core, we might be able to crack through its defenses."

Kalsei’s golden eyes gleamed with excitement. "Got it! Go for the glowy bit! Classic boss fight stuff!"

The guardian let out a deep, resonant growl, raising its arms once again. This time, however, the ground beneath their feet began to tremble violently. Seikan’s eyes widened. "Earthquake!"

The floor erupted, jagged cracks snaking out in all directions as the guardian unleashed its Earthquake ability. Kalsei leapt into the air, narrowly avoiding being swallowed by one of the cracks, while Steph stumbled, nearly losing her footing.

Seikan, quick to react, traced another rune in the air. "Rune of Decay!" Dark energy spread from his hand, seeping into the cracks in the ground. The runes pulsed with power, and the energy spread beneath the guardian’s feet, sapping its strength.

The guardian faltered for a moment, its movements slowing as the Rune of Decay drained its power. Kalsei saw his chance.

"Now! Focus on the core!" Seikan shouted.

Kalsei activated Rift Strike, his blade humming with power as he dashed forward, aiming directly for the glowing core in the guardian’s chest. The blade struck true, sending a shockwave through the creature’s body. This time, the impact caused visible cracks to spiderweb across its stone skin, and the glow from the core flickered.

Steph, not wanting to be left out, raised her staff, her eyes narrowing as she summoned Shadow Fang. A bolt of dark energy shot from her staff, striking the guardian’s core with a burst of power. The creature let out a deep, rumbling roar, stumbling backward as more cracks appeared along its body.

"It’s working!" Steph called out, her voice tinged with surprise.

Kalsei grinned, darting in for another strike. "Of course it’s working! We’ve got this!"

But the guardian wasn’t finished. Its eyes flared with a bright, burning light, and it raised both arms in one final, desperate attack. The air around them grew heavy as the creature prepared to bring its full weight down on them.

"Move!" Seikan shouted, already sprinting to the side.

Kalsei, always quick on his feet, blinked out of range just as the guardian’s fists crashed down, sending shards of stone and debris flying in all directions. The ground trembled violently, and for a moment, it seemed as though the entire chamber might collapse.

Seikan strategically traced another rune, his fingers moving with practiced precision. "Rune of Binding!" Dark chains erupted from the ground, wrapping around the guardian’s limbs and holding it in place. The creature struggled against the bindings, but its movements were sluggish and weakened.

Kalsei seized the opportunity, rushing forward with the Shattering Blade raised high. "Time to finish this!"

With one final, powerful strike, Kalsei brought the blade down on the guardian’s core. The impact sent a massive shockwave through the chamber, and the creature let out one last, earth-shaking roar before its body crumbled into a pile of stone and dust.

A system window appeared before them, glowing faintly in the aftermath of the battle:

Boss Defeated: Ancient Guardian 3000 experience points earned

Item Drop: Core of the Ancients (Rare Material)

Item Drop: Stonebreaker’s Gauntlet (Weapon – Heavy)

Kalsei grinned triumphantly as he sheathed his sword. "Now that’s what I call a boss fight! Did you see that? We totally crushed it!"

Steph, still catching her breath, gave him a dry look. "Yeah, after nearly getting flattened a few times. But sure, we crushed it."

Seikan, as usual, remained calm, though there was a small, satisfied smile on his face as he inspected the items they had earned. "This core... it holds immense power. We’ll need to study it further once we return to the capital."

Kalsei plopped down on a nearby stone, his golden eyes still shining with excitement. "Sounds good to me. But first, I think we’ve earned a little rest, don’t you?"

Steph, sitting down beside him with a tired sigh, nodded. "Agreed. Let’s not do anything else stupid for a while."

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

The trio sat in the chamber for a few moments, the glow of the system windows fading as they finally allowed themselves a brief moment of respite.

The dust began to settle around the broken remains of the Ancient Guardian, and the trio sat in the quiet aftermath of the battle, the echoes of their triumph still ringing in the chamber. They had faced tough fights before, but this one had been something different—a true test of their teamwork and abilities. As they caught their breath, another system window appeared before them, flashing brightly in the dim light of the chamber.

Level Up! Kalsei – Level 5 Seikan – Level 5 Steph – Level 5

Skill Points Earned: 1

Stat Points Earned: 5

Kalsei’s golden eyes flicked to the system window, a wide grin spreading across his face. "Finally! I thought that fight would never end, but at least we leveled up. Time to see what new toys we get."

Seikan remained composed, though there was a spark of interest in his usually calm gaze. He opened his own system window, quietly inspecting the new skills and stat points available to him. Steph, sitting back against one of the chamber’s stone walls, muttered softly, "At least we’re getting stronger. That guardian didn’t go down easily."

Kalsei rubbed his hands together, excitement bubbling up in him as he scrolled through his options. "Alright, let’s see what we’ve got. Agility’s still my strong suit, but I think I’ll add a bit more to Strength this time." He quickly allocated his stat points, adding three to Agility and two to Strength.

Kalsei – Level 5 Health: 250 → 270 Mana: 700 Strength: 15 → 17 (+5 from Shattering Blade) Agility: 27 → 30 (+15 from Shattering Blade) Intelligence: 17 Wisdom: 18 Luck: 2

Skill Point Spent: New Skill Unlocked: Void Blade (Lvl 1) A strike that sends a blade of void energy at enemies from a distance, dealing damage and potentially disorienting the target. Can be used in rapid succession.

Kalsei’s eyes lit up as the skill materialized in his system. "Oh, this is gonna be fun. A long-range attack, finally! Now I don’t always have to get up close and personal."

Steph rolled her eyes, though there was a hint of a smile on her face. "I’m sure you’ll find a way to make that dangerous for yourself too."

Kalsei winked at her. "You know me too well."

Seikan, who had been quietly observing, allocated his own stat points with methodical precision. He added three to Intelligence and two to Wisdom, solidifying his focus on his magic.

Seikan – Level 5 Health: 280 → 300 Mana: 650 → 700 Strength: 12 Agility: 18 Intelligence: 25 → 28 (+10 from Rune of Binding) Wisdom: 22 → 24 (+5 from Rune of Binding) Luck: 4

Skill Point Spent: New Skill Unlocked: Rune of Rupture (Lvl 1) Effect: Seikan can draw a rune that causes an enemy’s magical energy to destabilize. When activated, the rune overloads the target’s mana, causing them to take damage based on their remaining mana and weakening their spellcasting abilities for a short time. Additionally, any spells cast by the target during this effect have a chance to backfire.

Seikan inspected the new skill with a nod of approval. "This will help us control the battlefield more effectively. We’ve been relying too much on brute force. Strategy will win us the tougher fights."

Kalsei gave him a mock salute. "Sir, yes sir! We’ll follow your master plan."

Steph, having already finished her level-up, leaned back and let out a soft sigh. "I swear, if you two don’t start taking things seriously, we’re going to get killed one of these days."

Kalsei raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "What did you unlock, Steph? Anything fancy?"

Steph glanced at him, her expression unreadable as always, but there was a slight flicker of pride in her voice. "Just a new healing spell. Nothing ‘fancy,’ but useful. Vital Surge can heal us a lot faster than my other spells."

Steph – Level 5 Health: 240 → 260 Mana: 700 Strength: 14 Agility: 22 (+5 from Shadow Fang Dagger) Intelligence: 25 → 28 (+3 from Shadow Fang Dagger) Wisdom: 20 → 23 Luck: 3

Skill Point Spent: New Skill Unlocked: Vital Surge (Lvl 1): A powerful healing spell that rapidly restores a large amount of health to a single target. Can be used in combat but has a short cooldown.

Kalsei clapped his hands together. "Perfect! Now we’ve got even more staying power in fights. I knew adding a healer to the team was a good idea."

Steph shot him a deadpan look. "You didn’t exactly add me. I joined out of necessity. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves."

Seikan, standing with his arms crossed, glanced toward the entrance of the chamber. "We’ve leveled up and retrieved the core, but we should keep moving. The dungeon isn’t finished yet."

Kalsei groaned dramatically. "Ugh, really? I was just getting comfortable."

Seikan’s cold gaze flicked toward him. "If you want to get stronger, we keep going. The more we fight, the more we learn about this world."

Kalsei’s mischievous grin returned, and he hopped to his feet. "Alright, alright. But if we run into any more giant stone monsters, I’m letting Seikan take the lead."

Steph pushed herself up, adjusting her cloak as she sighed. "You always say that, but we all know you’ll be the first one charging in."

Kalsei winked. "Guilty as charged." He picked up the relic and the System window popped up.

Item Obtained: Relic - Shattered Prism Increases Agility by +8 and Mana by +10.

Effect:

Improves the wielder's dimensional awareness, allowing faster movement between dimensions.

Special Ability:

Fractured Reality: Creates multiple clones of the wielder for a brief time, confusing enemies and allowing for surprise attacks.

Description:

This relic was created by an ancient sorcerer who sought to manipulate dimensions. The Shattered Prism allows the wielder to glimpse alternate realities and use that knowledge in combat.

The trio made their way out of the chamber and deeper into the dungeon, the flickering torchlight casting long shadows along the damp stone walls. The air grew colder the further they descended, and the ominous silence was broken only by the sound of their footsteps echoing in the cavernous space.

As they walked, Kalsei glanced over at Seikan, his curiosity piqued once more. "So, about that core we grabbed... any thoughts on what we can do with it? I’m hoping it explodes into treasure or something."

Seikan shook his head, his expression thoughtful. "The core is far more valuable than simple treasure. It’s a rare material, likely infused with ancient magic. We’ll need to study it further once we return to the capital."

Steph, her dark eyes flicking between the two, added dryly, "Just don’t blow anything up with it, okay? The last thing we need is to start another adventure cleaning up your mess."

Kalsei laughed, raising his hands defensively. "Hey, no promises! But seriously, I think we’re in for something big once we figure out what that thing does."

The air in the dungeon shifted slightly, a low hum of energy running through the walls as they descended deeper. The sense of danger hadn’t fully dissipated, but with their new skills and their growing camaraderie, the trio felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

As they approached a new section of the dungeon, the ground beneath their feet rumbled softly, and the faint sound of grinding stone echoed through the corridor. Kalsei’s golden eyes gleamed with excitement, his grin widening as he drew the Shattering Blade once more.

"Looks like we’ve got more fun ahead of us."
