Chapter 25: Enemies Within

Chapter 25: Enemies Within

As night settled over the guild, a plan took shape in Seikan’s mind, sharper and more immediate than anything he had discussed with Kalsei. Though they had agreed to gather evidence, Seikan’s instincts told him that waiting could cost them everything. This wasn’t about caution anymore; it was about survival.

Once he was sure the others were resting, Seikan slipped quietly out of their quarters. The guild was quiet at this hour, the usual hum of activity reduced to faint footsteps and the occasional creak of old wood. He moved with purpose, his mind steady despite the weight of what he was about to do. The counsellor had done more than manipulate—he had reached into Seikan’s mind, tried to reshape him, bend him to someone else’s will. Seikan had lived through that nightmare, and he wasn’t about to let it happen to anyone else.

When he reached the counsellor’s door, he didn’t hesitate. Silently, he pushed it open, slipping into the dimly lit room where the man sat at his desk, his attention absorbed in some unseen document.

“Ah, Seikan,” the counsellor began, glancing up with a placid smile. “An unexpected visit.”

Seikan’s expression remained neutral, though his eyes burned with barely contained rage. "Just thought we should talk," he said, his tone deceptively calm.

The counsellor stood, sensing something in Seikan's gaze, but before he could speak, Seikan’s hand shot forward, gripping his face with iron strength. The man’s mouth opened in a silent scream, but Seikan’s hold rendered him voiceless. He summoned his dark energy, letting it seep into the counsellor's body, sapping his life force and mana, draining him of every ounce of vitality.

The man’s eyes filled with terror, his hands clawing at Seikan’s arm, but it was futile. Seikan leaned close, his voice cold and low. "You have manipulated your last mind."

As the counsellor’s body went limp, his skin drained of color, Seikan released him, letting the lifeless form slump to the floor. The room fell into a tense silence, the reality of his actions settling over him like a heavy cloak.

Just then, the door creaked open. Kalsei stepped inside, his golden eyes widening at the scene before him. "Seikan..." he whispered, realization dawning quickly.

Seikan met his gaze, flinching slightly at the sudden appearance of Kalsei. “It's not what it looks like. I-”

Kalsei’s expression softened, though his mind was reeling from the sight before him, his mind overshadowed with the need to protect his best friend. Though his heart was fill with concern, he gave a small nod and held up his hand, cutting Seikan's words short. "It's alright. Let’s just make sure no one finds him, then."

Kalsei knelt beside the body, channeling his reality-warping powers. The counsellor’s form began to shrink, compressing down, twisting into something small and unrecognizable until, finally, he was the size of a marble. Kalsei picked it up, turning it over in his hand with a faint smile. “Not my usual magic trick, but I’d say it’s effective.”

Seikan’s expression remained solemn, but a sense of finality washed over him. The counsellor was gone. The shadow of his control lifted, and for the first time in weeks, Seikan felt a semblance of peace.

“Thank you,” he said softly.

Kalsei clapped him on the back with a forced grin, trying to lighten the mood. “You’re lucky I’m here to cover for you. And hey, look on the bright side—now the guild has a bit of a mystery on its hands. Let’s get out of here.”

The next morning, as the guild stirred back to life, whispers spread quickly about the counsellor’s mysterious disappearance. Seikan stayed silent, keeping to himself as usual, while Kalsei was his usual cheerful self, cracking jokes and brushing off questions. They maintained their distance, avoiding any suspicion.

At breakfast, Darius and Steph joined them, the topic already buzzing among other adventurers.

“Have you guys heard?” Steph asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and concern. “The counsellor’s gone. No one’s seen him since last night.”

Kalsei feigned surprise, giving her a wide-eyed look. “Wow, really? Maybe he needed a vacation.”

Darius frowned thoughtfully. “Seems strange. I thought he was... well, invested in his work here.”

“Guess he found something better to do,” Kalsei replied with a smirk, deflecting the conversation.

Though Steph and Darius were curious, they let the subject drop. As the morning went on, the group focused on more immediate tasks, reviewing their skills and making plans for the next series of quests. Kalsei kept things light-hearted, using his usual humor to keep everyone’s spirits up.

With their recent level-ups, each of them had accumulated a substantial amount of skill points, which they now considered using to fortify their abilities further. Seikan especially felt the need to strengthen himself after the encounter with the counsellor.

After spending their skill points and reviewing their new abilities, Kalsei stretched with a grin. “Alright, so who’s ready to go beast-hunting with some new tricks up their sleeve?”

Steph rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide a smile. “You’re going to drive us crazy with these powers, aren’t you?”

“Of course,” Kalsei replied, winking. “Would I even be me if I didn't?”

The guild soon assigned them a new quest—one that involved tracking down a group of rogue mages rumored to be operating near Emberfall. Though it was dangerous territory, they accepted eagerly, ready to put their upgraded abilities to the test.

As they left the guild hall, Seikan felt a strange sense of calm, an unfamiliar lightness that had been missing since his captivity.

The dawn was breaking as the group set out from the guild hall, the quiet city streets bathed in the soft light of early morning. Kalsei, as always, led the way, whistling a lively tune that echoed in the silence. The group had been through much over the past weeks, but today, there was a renewed sense of purpose in the air, an unspoken promise of moving forward.

Seikan, walking beside Kalsei, was uncharacteristically relaxed, his usual icy demeanor softened. The counsellor's disappearance had left an air of mystery in the guild, and while a few questions had been asked, none had lingered too long on the matter. Life in the guild moved fast, and adventurers rarely had the time or desire to investigate further.

Darius caught up to them, looking at Kalsei with a raised eyebrow. “You’re in an awfully good mood for someone who was so grim a few days ago.”

Kalsei just grinned. “Just excited to put these new skills to work. I’ve got a feeling today’s going to be... explosive.” He wiggled his fingers dramatically, causing Steph to sigh.

“Please don’t let it be explosive,” she muttered, though the corners of her mouth twitched in amusement.

Seikan smirked, casting a sidelong glance at Kalsei. “You might actually get that wish. Emberfall isn’t exactly known for its peace and quiet.”

Kalsei just laughed, clapping Seikan on the back. “Then it’s a good thing we’ve all got some new tricks, isn’t it?”

“Looks like we’re back in business,” Kalsei remarked, his golden eyes gleaming. “Who’s ready to teach some rogue mages a lesson?”

“Just keep your enthusiasm in check,” Steph replied, adjusting her Void-Touched Staff as they moved out of the city. “We’ve got a long hike ahead of us before we get anywhere near Emberfall.”

As they traveled, the group fell into a comfortable rhythm. Kalsei’s jokes and occasional sarcasm provided light-hearted moments, breaking up the quiet tension that had settled over them. The gentle banter and laughter felt good, like old times.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

The trail took them through dense forests and rocky paths, each step bringing them closer to the perilous landscape of Emberfall. By midday, they had reached a cliff overlooking the highlands, where the Emberfall range stretched out before them, a daunting maze of jagged cliffs and scattered streams of molten lava. The air was thick with the smell of sulfur, and the distant rumble of shifting earth reminded them that this was golem territory.

As they began their descent, Kalsei’s eyes gleamed with a playful spark. “Anyone up for a bit of skill practice?” He wiggled his fingers, the faint glow of his powers activating as he glanced over at Seikan.

Steph smirked, clearly ready to observe the spectacle. “Just don’t blow up the mountain, alright?”

With a grin, Kalsei activated Warped Slash, swinging his Shattering Blade in a wide arc. The air distorted around his blade, sending a ripple of energy that struck the nearest rock, slicing it cleanly in half, and Kalsei gave a satisfied nod. “Not bad, right?”

Darius whistled. “I’d hate to be on the receiving end of that.”

Seikan, not to be outdone, activated Eldritch Grasp. Dark energy crackled around his hand, tendrils of mana reaching out and latching onto a nearby tree. The life force drained in an instant, the bark withering to ash. He released his hold, nodding with a grim satisfaction.

“I think we’re more than ready for whatever Emberfall throws at us,” he said, a subtle but confident smile on his face.

They continued to make their way down the rugged terrain, each member taking turns trying out their new abilities. Steph’s Spectral Chains conjured eerie, ghostly bindings that held solid rocks in place, while her Void Surge sent waves of dark energy through her staff, striking targets with precision.

As the sun began to dip lower, they finally neared the edge of Emberfall, where the atmosphere seemed to shift—charged with an undercurrent of hostile energy. The ground beneath them was cracked and blackened, with steam rising from unseen vents. Darius raised a hand, signaling for silence, his eyes scanning the area.

“Hold up,” he whispered. “I hear something.”

They had barely taken a few steps when the ground rumbled. From beneath the cracked earth, two hulking figures emerged, their bodies composed of molten rock and shimmering obsidian. Flames licked along their bodies as they stomped forward, eyes glowing with a primal fury.

System Alert: Emberfall Golems Detected! Class: Elemental Guardian Level: 18

Health: 4500 Abilities: Flame Burst, Obsidian Shield, Magma Wave

Weakness: Water and Ice-based attacks

Kalsei grinned, unsheathing his Shattering Blade. “Who's ready to rock and roll?”

Darius readied his sword, nodding. “No time for games, Kalsei. Let’s take them down.”

Steph raised her staff, casting Soul Mender to ensure everyone’s health remained stable during the fight. “Let's get down with the sickness,” she said giving Kalsei a wink.

Kalsei darted forward, activating Temporal Echo. His movements seemed to blur, an echo of himself following each swing of his blade, confusing the golems as he launched a series of quick strikes. The golem tried to retaliate with a Flame Burst, but Kalsei blinked out of the way just in time, leaving the attack to strike the rocky ground behind him.

Meanwhile, Seikan summoned Rune of Shadows to cloak himself, slipping behind the second golem unnoticed. He activated Eldritch Grasp again, sapping its mana reserves, weakening the creature’s flames.

Steph focused her energy, casting Void Surge to amplify her next attack. Dark energy radiated from her staff as she struck the first golem, the powerful void magic tearing chunks of molten rock from its body. “Let’s see how you like that!” she muttered with satisfaction.

Darius, using his sword’s enhanced edge, struck the golem’s legs, chipping away at its obsidian armor. The combined onslaught from all directions wore down the golems until, with one final blow from Kalsei’s Warped Slash, the first golem shattered, sending chunks of rock scattering across the ground.

The second golem, weakened from Seikan’s mana drain and Steph’s magic, put up less of a fight. Darius delivered the final strike, his blade cleaving through its core.

As the dust settled, the group took a moment to catch their breath, the thrill of victory buzzing through them.

“Not bad, everyone,” Kalsei said, sheathing his blade with a satisfied grin. “And here I thought this was going to be tough.”

Steph raised an eyebrow, her usual sarcasm returning. “Says the guy who almost got singed by a Flame Burst.”

Kalsei shrugged, unfazed. “Hey, come on, that didn't even come close. I'm totally a ninja now.”

They all laughed, except Seikan, who gave them a cold calculating gaze. It was good to see Seikan’s spirits lifting, a hint of his old confidence returning. The specter of his trauma lingered, the tension easing as they continued their journey.

The mountainside was blanketed in thick fog as Kalsei, Seikan, Steph, and Darius made their way up the winding path. Strange whispers seemed to float on the breeze, faint voices of warning carried from somewhere further up the trail. Shadows moved in the mist, hints of figures clad in flowing, rune-etched robes barely visible.

Kalsei’s golden eyes narrowed, and he stopped, holding up a hand. “Looks like we’ve got company,” he whispered, his usual sarcasm giving way to an unusual level of focus as he imitated Darius very unsubtly. “Elemental mages, right?”

Darius nodded with a knowing smirk and drew his sword, the blade glinting even in the dim light. “This is definitely their territory. If they’re waiting for us, they’ll have traps set all along the way.”

As if on cue, a system notification appeared, confirming their suspicions.

System Alert: High Elemental Mages Detected! Class: Master Mage Level: 20

Health: 1500 Mana: 2500 Abilities: Arcane Storm, Flame Pillar, Frost Chain, Gale Barrier

Weakness: Physical Attacks, Disruption Magic Objective: Clear the elemental ward to proceed.

Steph’s eyes narrowed as she read the alert. “These aren’t going to be simple spells. We’re facing some real firepower here.”

Before any of them could react, a wave of arcane energy surged through the fog, crackling with lightning and echoing with an ominous hum. Two mages emerged, cloaked in robes that shimmered with swirling elemental auras. One raised his staff, sending a series of Flame Pillars shooting from the ground toward the group.

Kalsei activated Phantom Blink, splitting into multiple shadowy images that danced through the fog. The fire blasted through some of the illusions, but his real form slipped through untouched. “You’ll have to do better than that!” he taunted, reappearing with a cocky grin.

Seikan immediately retaliated, summoning Eldritch Grasp. Shadowy tendrils licked out of his hand, gripping the mage. “This should hold him... for a while,” Seikan muttered, focusing on draining the mage’s mana.

The other mage raised his hands, the air around him thickening into a shimmering barrier of wind. Gale Barrier flickered, deflecting projectiles as he chanted something in an ancient language. Then, with a flick of his hand, he unleashed Frost Chain. Icy tendrils shot toward the group, freezing the ground beneath their feet and threatening to bind them in place.

Steph was ready, however. With a flourish of her staff, she summoned Abyssal Shield, a barrier of dark energy absorbing the impact of the Frost Chain. “Nice try, but we’re not here to chill,” she smirked, retaliating with Void Cascade. Dark energy erupted toward the mage, slipping past the wind barrier and striking him directly, draining his stamina.

The mage snarled and retaliated with Arcane Storm, bolts of chaotic magic flying wildly from his staff, striking everything in their path. Darius dodged nimbly, lunging toward the mage with Steel Tempest. His sword became a blur as he slashed through the air, landing rapid hits that forced the mage back, shattering his Gale Barrier.

As the mage staggered, Kalsei saw his opening. He activated Reality Rift, twisting space to close the distance between him and the wounded mage. With a flourish, he struck with Temporal Slash, warping the mage’s perception and dealing a devastating blow.

Meanwhile, Seikan tightened his Eldrich Grasp on the second mage, who struggled against the hold, his magic and mana rapidly depleting. Seikan's eyes narrowed, watching the mage dying in his grasp with a cruel satisfaction.

With one last look at his team, Kalsei giggled, “Let’s finish this.” He activated Rift Strike, a shockwave of energy tearing through both mages.

The two mages fell, their cloaks dissolving into the mist, leaving only the echo of their chants lingering in the air. The system flashed their success:

System Alert: High Elemental Ethereal Mages Defeated! Experience Gained: 7500

Kalsei laughed, his usual grin back in place. “Well, guess these guys aren’t so high and mighty after all!”

Seikan shook his head. "Those were not the mages," he said coldly. "They were mere ethereal doubles."

"We should report this back to the guild," Darius said, looking to the others. "This is well above our capabilities. We don't know how strong they actually are."

Kalsei made a sound in protest; but Darius shook his head. "I get it, Kalsei. You're a bad ass ninja. But we don't know what we will be up against if we try and face them."

"Maybe we should get confirmation first," Steph added, giving Kalsei a small smile.

"Alright. Fine. But I will be back to deal with them later." Kalsei pouted.

After a few more minor encounters and gathering items along the way, they returned to the guild, where the news of the counsellor’s disappearance was still a hot topic. Kalsei and Seikan exchanged glances, both maintaining carefully neutral expressions as they passed by conversations speculating on the mysterious circumstances.

“Have any of you seen him?” a guild member asked, looking directly at Kalsei.

Kalsei put on his best innocent smile. “Not a clue! Maybe he finally went on that vacation he always talked about.” He shrugged, glancing at Seikan, who just nodded, keeping quiet.

Once safely back in their quarters, the group took some time to review their latest abilities and experiences. With their skills newly honed, each member felt a renewed sense of purpose and readiness for the next challenges.

Later that evening, Seikan and Kalsei shared a quiet moment, watching the city lights from the guild’s balcony. The cool night air was refreshing after the intensity of Emberfall, and Seikan found himself unexpectedly at ease.

“You alright?” Kalsei asked, his usual playful grin softened by genuine concern.

Seikan nodded, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “I think so. It’s... nice to feel in control again. The counsellor may be gone, but his grip on me isn’t.”

Kalsei clapped him on the back with a grin. “Good. Because we’ve got a whole lot more to do, and I need to have my favorite shadow-wielding, rune-obsessed friend by my side,” Kalsei finished, flashing Seikan a grin.

Seikan chuckled, the sound low but genuine. “You know, you’re annoyingly good at pulling people out of dark places, Kalsei.”

“Annoyingly good is what I aim for,” Kalsei shot back, his grin widening.

As they stood there, watching the distant flicker of lights in the city, a comfortable silence settled between them. For the first time in weeks, Seikan felt the shadows within him beginning to ease, as though the weight of his recent ordeal was starting to lift.

Back inside, Steph and Darius were sorting through their latest loot and discussing potential upgrades. Steph glanced up as the others came in, her usually calm demeanor softened by a small smile. “About time you two joined us. I was starting to think you’d gone off to raid the kitchens.”

Kalsei’s eyes lit up. “Now that you mention it...”

“Let’s save that for after,” Darius interrupted, giving Kalsei a dry look. “We’ve got skill points to allocate, and I think a few upgrades will make sure we’re even more prepared for the next round of quests.”

One by one, they reviewed their skill, each of them selecting new abilities to prepare for whatever challenges awaited. The system windows glowed as skill points were allocated, each choice making them stronger, more versatile.
