I remember being in the deep, the voice of a boy telling me to hold still, that he made this view to keep me calm as he worked. He said my name, told me things about myself, when I tried to look to see who it was all that broke away. My name, my qualities, statuses, my shape, I saw it all clatter out into the twisting fog of the deep dark down deep dark of the below, and the boy scolded me.
I wept silent tears as I watched myself, my self, glitter into the not yet anything as the boy went back to work. Onto key concepts and assumptions I felt knowledge bolted on, foreign from another place but connected threw what I knew, like a library of things I could relate to but never experience on a fundamental level. Where once was me was inserted roots of something not me, shapeless and strong but born like any other creature, it would be me in time.
As I stared and felt I could describe what twisting inkblots of cloud and coral I saw there was something laid over me, a helmet it felt like but it was smart and embraced me close. Then I was in the sky, looking down at the weird quilt I vaguely recognized as my world. In it and infront of it I was seeing all the things I could do, with a little knowledge on how to do them, like an overlay.
That was when the girl spoke to me and said all the things I'd need to know.
"Me and the brother maintain this place and are in a struggle to continue our existence, we fight a reactive battle against one who would extinguish all, you are meant to be part of a proactive solution, not a key piece but one that will help many of the other parts we already have in play." I took this in and saw how the sun was siphoned off to power the stars with ate of meals not of flavorful mana but of something deeper.
"There are things eating your food, you have made predators to exterminate them. I am to counteract the countermeasures of the pests, yes?" I turned to look at her, see the reaction, I saw something that looked like a cloud made of clockwork and sugar. So many glittering crystals that dimmed at my words.
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
"I have made traps for them, my brother made predators, you are an extractor, interrogator. You draw power by taunting and pricking at the parasites, you smell like so much food to their hosts, but you must take care that you are not eaten." She says and I think I understand. Then something glows inside her and I am surrounded by brass crabs, milky crystals all over their shells as they poke faceted claws into sensitive places.
I do not wince, I trust them after all, they are a part of one of my creators.
All along the ground my vision twitches, like a blurry film has been extracted and my perception shuffles around, getting the right mix of things together in one 'sight'. One moment the world in colorful sand, tiny grains everywhere with massive crystals lumbering around scraping and chaffing on others, then there's a tarry bubbly goo webbing the world, gathering on grid points of heat. One mode sees only a massive Duck looming black and resplendent over all the land, another everything looks normal, just a little dull in some spots. An alarming one shows a tree, red and infectious until it turns green, and I overlay it read, and the crabs make my overlay green, where I make it transparent and turn the base vision red hued.
Eventually my vision settles, seeing the landscape, full of color, with overlays of the flavor of mana in local zones, between the land and the stars is a web or a net, it's hard to tell cause it's been torn and repaired so many times. One crab stands in the middle of my vision bonking me with the blunt of his claw and I wonder 'is this a permanent thing or is he gonna go away some time?'
The web flashes and I see a bright spot tugging an orange one behind it, the pin pricks of light where they bounce between grumbling up at them as they go, all the way up passed me. The wrecking ball hovering next to the cloud girl as I see words in my vision. Most of it reads as gibberish or sorting commands but at the end of it there's a little 'diagnostics complete: RDY' before I'm sent soaring into the ground.
All that was before my life even started, maybe a little before I woke up proper, but I'm awake and just basking in the sun. Basking in the sun...with a whole library of books. I wander what comes up when I just reach in and pick.
"Early 20th Century Scientific Developments and Their Impact on Warfighting Capabilities" this might be a bit too fluffy, some advancements making healing or building things strong easier would be a bit boring.
