Chapter 29: The Battle Begins

Chen Xiaofei opened the window and leaned out, firing a burst of shots at the rear. The sound of gunfire scared the survivors in the vehicle, making them crouch together and scream while covering their heads.

Yang Cong had been tied up tightly to prevent him from causing trouble.

Zhao Gang was anxiously waiting, while Liu Chunhui held their little daughter tightly. The family of three was anxious but quiet, neither screaming nor causing chaos.

Wang Weihu drove aggressively, closely following Qin Luo's SUV.

Until Qin Luo signaled with his lights, he immediately understood it meant to stop and fight.

"No choice, we can't escape. Zhao Gang, you drive and take the others forward. You should be able to meet other rescue teams when you reach C City," Wang Weihu shouted to Zhao Gang. The bus had a full tank, and they had several canisters of gasoline scavenged from other vehicles stored in the back.

It was more than enough for them to reach C City. "You'll have to go on your own from here. Listen carefully, no matter what mutant animals or zombies you encounter, don't be afraid. Stay calm, and if you can crash through, just do it."

Although Zhao Gang's hands were shaking with nervousness, he nodded repeatedly, "I understand. But what about you? Can you handle that big thing?"

Liu Chunhui, pale-faced, also said, "There are only a few of you, how can you fight that monster? Why don't we all leave together? Just drive faster."

But Wang Weihu said there was no time left. "If we continue like this, none of you will escape. We'll buy some time, and if things get really bad, we can still escape. If we take you along, we can't fight freely, it's easy to get distracted."

After saying this, he stopped the car.

Zhao Gang didn't dare to delay any longer and immediately switched to the driver's seat. Because Wang Weihu had been driving, they had successfully put some distance between them and the snake-man, buying them a little time. He gritted his teeth and said, "Alright, we won't hold you back. Please be careful. If we meet anyone, we'll ask them to come and support you!"

Wang Weihu smiled and patted his shoulder, telling him to try to drive as fast as possible.

Their little daughter, curled up in Liu Chunhui's arms, opened her big eyes and said, "Uncles, you are heroes. Please be safe."

Wang Weihu reached out and patted the little girl's head, "Be good and listen to your mom and dad."

The little girl nodded.

Chen Xiaofei immediately pulled back from the window. He had just fired several shots, but could only manage to graze a few small wounds on the big fat snake. "Damn, this thing is so agile, can't hit it at all!"

Wang Weihu jumped off the bus, "Xiaofei, hurry up!"

Chen Xiaofei agreed and jumped down, then added, "If you want to live, you'd better not untie that dog, to avoid causing trouble."

The others were all trembling with fear. Hearing this, they all looked at Yang Cong.

If Yang Cong wasn't tightly bound and gagged, he would have been cursing loudly. He struggled with a terrified expression on his face, but couldn't move at all.

The others nodded repeatedly, understanding that this guy was the most likely to cause trouble.

Wu Zijie even said ingratiatingly, "Do you need us to take your little female teammate with us?"

Wang Weihu switched weapons, as did Chen Xiaofei. He suddenly remembered the scene of Xu Duoduo killing mutant monkeys with a chainsaw and involuntarily shuddered. He said, "Our teammate doesn't need that."

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Not to mention anything else, there were too many uncertainties in the apocalypse, and it would be too dangerous for Xu Duoduo to go alone.

In any case.

It was just one mutant snake-man, not necessarily unbeatable. At worst, they'd trade some injuries for the snake's life!

Even if Xu Duoduo couldn't help much, protecting her would be less troublesome than protecting these ordinary people.

Wang Weihu waved for them to leave quickly, and Zhao Gang immediately stepped on the gas and left.

The whole process took less than two minutes. The bus suddenly overtook the SUV on the side and drove straight ahead, honking as they passed by as a gesture of gratitude.

Qin Luo honked back, and then he and Bai Shu quickly got out of the car.

Xu Duoduo didn't need to be told; she could figure out that she couldn't stay in the car. No matter how sturdy the car was, it was no match for mutant creatures.

Staying would be like becoming canned food.

So she quickly jumped out of the car too.

Zhao Gang looked back in the rearview mirror. These young people were buying time for them to survive. Even though he knew it was their duty, it was hard not to be moved. The grown man's eyes reddened.

Liu Chunhui was also praying in her heart, hoping these young people would be alright, and that their busload of people could escape safely.

Wu Zijie saw the little girl jump out of the SUV behind them, and she actually didn't run away.

No crying, no fuss, no weak knees.

If nothing else, just based on this, she was definitely not the weak and delicate beauty that Yang Cong had described.

Looking at their own side.

The survivors were already too scared to speak, all sitting weakly in their seats, clutching the railings tightly. There was even a smell of urine.

It wasn't clear who had wet themselves out of fear.

For ordinary people to see such a strange giant snake and not go crazy was already considered psychologically strong.

On Xu Duoduo's side, the battle began. She knew her combat ability was limited, so when Qin Luo, as the captain, told her and Bai Shu to stay put,

She quickly followed Bai Shu and ran towards the slope beside the highway.

Bai Shu was in the sniper position. He had to quickly find a good spot and get ready.

Qin Luo took out a handful of small bombs from his storage card space, each about the size of a marble. Everyone's earpieces were quickly turned on.

"Old Wang, Xiaofei, hold this thing off. I'll come to support you right away."

...

Xu Duoduo followed Bai Shu through the woods towards the direction of the snake-man.

Instructions for their coordination came through the earpieces.

Despite Bai Shu's scholarly appearance, his movements were truly agile. By the time Qin Luo and the others reported their coordinates, he had already set up his rifle in position.

Xu Duoduo stayed by Bai Shu's side, on alert. The apocalypse had changed everything dramatically; even the insects in the forest had mutated. Colorful spiders as big as fists were everywhere. She fought her nausea and stabbed them accurately with her dagger, one by one.

Bai Shu, in battle mode, spoke very little, but he noticed that Xu Duoduo was actually helping him clear "obstacles"?

She quietly "cleared" everything that might disturb him.

The little team leader lived up to her title.

They stopped at a rock, surrounded by many trees, very well-concealed.

After Bai Shu got into position, he informed the other three that he was "in position." Then the battle officially began!

The sounds of combat were intense.

Xu Duoduo crouched beside him, driving away mutant insects. These insects in the forest, starving and cannibalizing each other, had finally found fresh meat. They all tried to crawl towards Bai Shu, only to be sprayed with insecticide by Xu Duoduo.

Finding it effective, she simply poured two packs of insect repellent powder on Bai Shu.

It worked well.

Bai Shu trusted her completely and didn't even mind what she was doing.

He entered a flow state directly.

One shot, one wound, but he couldn't hit the snake-man's vital point. He could only keep changing positions to avoid being discovered by the mutant snake-man.

Through the earpieces, they could hear how intense the battle was. Later, Xu Duoduo couldn't keep up with Bai Shu and stopped following. She looked towards the few people fighting not far away.

Wang Weihu was already covered in blood, clearly injured. Chen Xiaofei's movements were becoming labored. Qin Luo was still going strong for now.
