After the whole incident on the stairwell, Chrys had sat in the living room. Taking a seat on a large black leather couch that dominated most of the modest living room in the house. Micheal only had been in a home this small once that he could think of. Though his expectation of size he knew was warped because of his upbringing.
“Come over here Micheal,” Chrys said patting the couch near her, a grimace on her face as if she already was hating whatever idea was in her head already. Micheal seriously was having a hard time reading this woman so he just did what she said.
The sound of the TV playing was the only noise in the room for a moment as they sat near each other Micheal feeling awkward and a little confused.
“So… I have some ground rules that I was told that you must follow.”
“Told?” Micheal asked which was met with a withering glare.
“Stop asking so many questions human, I’m having enough difficulties as it is trying to answer the many you’ve already got.”
“Sorry.”
She sighed, “I don’t usually interact with your kind so this is new to me.” She crossed her arms, and legs, her skirt lifting a little. Micheal tried very hard to keep his eyes focused still remembering what he had seen earlier.
“First off, from now until you run out of the time you are to refer to me as your sister when we are out in public.”
“Why?”
“Because it is the simplest way for you to have your wish fulfilled while still leaving me able to supervise you.”
“Why do you need to supervise me at all?” He asked
“There are many reasons but I will leave it with this. Without me, your normal life would become something regrettable.”
“How?”
“Homelessness does not make for a normal life does it?”
“But I have a home.”
“No, you are not allowed to go anywhere near your old home.”
“But what about my family, it isn’t a normal life without my family.
“I’m your family now.”
“Did you do something to them?”
“No, just stay away from your family and anyone that you may have known in your prior life.”
“Why?”
She gave Micheal an evil eye. “Quit being difficult I am not allowed to explain everything, listen to me though and you’ll have a comfortable normal life.”
“The second rule, if you see anything out of the ordinary, run.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“You are in a sort of limbo Micheal, you may have noticed but you can interact with things that you were not able to before. Some things are mostly safe for a normal person. But you are special, at least now you are. You need to pretend that you can’t see or hear anything that you may not have been able to before. Because if they find out that you can see them, you will not survive your full year.”
Micheal remembered that ghost girl. He could touch her like any other person but she was able to go right through his floor.
“So are you talking about staying away from ghosts?”
Chrys shrugged, “Ghosts are the least of your worries human.” She pauses, “But yes, Ghosts can be dangerous as well.”
“Okay, then what should I watch out for?”
She stood up grabbing Micheal's hand, her warm delicate hand squeezing with the force of a vice.
“What the hell are you doing?” Micheal said in surprise as he was practically dragged from his seat.
“I will show you human, but be quiet and only speak when I say to speak.”
Micheal followed, his hand feeling like it was going to break from the pressure.
An interesting headline flashed on the tv before he was dragged off. “Sixth murder in what looks like a cult killing spree”
Micheal was finally walking on his own outside, the smell of fresh air invigorated him and he almost forgot about the vice grip on his hand at least until she pulled on him. He didn’t recognize the neighborhood he was in, though he did recognize a building in the far distance a skyscraper that he could see from his window in his hospital bed back before he had been moved to home care.
“What are we looking for?”
“What did I say in the house? Only speak if I tell you too.”
A strange feeling like he was being watched pervaded his senses before he could respond. A dull dread forced his mouth shut, he looked over to Chrys to see if she felt it too but she seemed to be acting normally.
“Something seemed to have stirred them up,” Chrys said, though strangely enough her mouth hadn’t moved at all.
“What?” Micheal said involuntarily.
“Don’t draw their attention. Act like you’re just a normal human.
Micheal gulped, he could feel something in the air and he swore he could see something in his peripherals. Shadows dancing in the alleys. The road they were on was mostly empty, too early in the morning, the sun just peeking out and suddenly Micheal felt stupid for following this crazy woman outside.
