Chapter 6

I am sitting on my legs in my dish wearing a leather hooded poncho Gizmo had given me. It looked like a poncho dress on me, even though it fit him normally.

“You can’t just do that to me little one.” He said. Crossing his arms. His attitude seems to have changed towards me since he walked in on me. I cant help but to shake in silent laughter. Do I get the goddaughter title in addition to my other two titles?

“I’m serious, and since when where you a girl? I thought slimes aren’t gendered?” he asks. I just shrug to him. I start to try and form facial features as I stare at him. Nose, lips ears. Gizmo stops his scolding and watches.

“Are you doing that now?” he asks. I nod in confirmation.

“Well, I’ll leave you to it.” He said returning to his work station. I turn my focus back to my body. So many things to consider. I know with human bodies, feet have the thickest layer of skin, for obvious reasons, so I should increase thickness and density of my membrane there, and my legs will hold all my weight, so the membrane there should obviously be thicker. My hands, as well. When all is said and done, I realize I’ve made myself look anorexic. I condensed to much. So I undo some of it, and hold the thickness though. With that, I feel less strained as well.

I sigh to myself, in body language alone of course. I want to form “hair” an experiment with eyes. But I’m already out off mass to allocate. Unless I pull from my hips and legs, but I like the shape! I cross my arms and think on it. If I pull mas from there I would thin out and defiantly look like a loli. I cant do it. So I go bald for now. I have the same problem with eyes, I don’t have allocatable mass to experiment unless I just want to revert into a half puddle state again.

I decide to see if I can even use my body to walk as I am. I go to crawl out of my dish, and that was a chore. I also kept catching on the poncho. I push the poncho with my hands as I crawl to one of the counter tops near by. By now Gizmo has stopped working on whatever he was to watch. I pulled myself up resting heavily on the counter. My arms where spraining and bending in ways that reveal I don’t have bones. Which you could tell just by looking through my transparent body, but I digress. My legs don’t hold up any better. The moment I sit myself up proper on my legs, they rupture, causing me to melt. I reabsorb my slime back into my membrane, but stay in the puddled state. Gizmo had rushed besides me with worry on his face. It was the most difficult thing I had done so far, trying to keep my limbs from bending, and supporting my weight.

“Are you okay?” he asked looking over me, wanting to comfort me or help me in some way, but not knowing how or where to start. I form my head and nod. I begin to pull myself back to and into my dish, keeping the poncho over top me. I guess I was jumping the gun. No walking or legs for now.

I roughly form myself back to how I was, but from the stomach up. With this, I decide to forgo the idea of being a more definable humanoid.

“You know you’re a slime, no need to look human. It looks like your trying really hard. Don’t strain yourself okay?” Gizmo said walking over to my dish. I shake my head side to side and cross my arms. They melt together. There goes my work on membrane density.

“Sigh, just, don’t strain yourself okay?” he said with a worried smile. I nod softly to him as I return focus back to myself. I pull mass to my head and form a sort of round bob cut that resembles a white haired android from my memories. The hair wasn’t made of individual hairs, but rather clumps that resembled tentacles, that sat in flat layers. I made all the hair into membrane appendages. I don’t think I’ll need any fluid inside of them.

From there, I decide to go with large eyes. Something that’d resemble a hyper realistic anime style. I form membrane marbles, and sockets for them to sit into. Nothing changed in my sight, but I could move them around as I pleased by utilizing optical nerve like attachments in the back of the eyes. I realized some of my features are a bit redundant, because I was completely texture-less. My body looked as clear as water. The membrane was only slightly more opaque than my more fluid like slime.

I decide to try something. If I can control the density of my slime and change the viscosity of it, maybe I can change other aspects. So with that, I hold my arm up and focus on it. I think and visualize the membrane on my arm becoming more opaque, like frosted or sand blasted glass. And it worked! It started in a single spot and spread to the rest of where I pictured it.

At that realization I undid the changes, and then focused on my hair and both of my scleras. I make the “whites of my eyes” and hair this heavily opaque look. I quickly follow with that train of thought and wonder if I can assign more than texture to my body.

The first thing I wanted to do was get proper sight. Mana sight was good and all, but it had a range. I cant see the sky, or anything beyond about fifty feet. It’s like a fog that starts at maybe forty or so feet, and grows thicker further out. Id like to see the rest of the fields and deeper into the forest that lies on the path to the city. And even could gaze. I internally sigh at the realization of how much I enjoyed seeing things normally.

With that I focus on my eyes, and recall roughly how eyes worked. Well I don’t have any special schooling on the subject, I went to school, and learned basic biology, and the Internet being a source of boredom alleviation decided to educate me in the subject randomly. Thus I recall how the eyes were meant to take in light and go to the back of the eye. But I don’t have nerves or anything so…

With intent, I focus on my eyes. Take in light, relay information to my core, like blue tooth! I must have gotten lost in time, because before I know it, Gizmo was kneeling over trying to get my attention.

“What are you up to little one?” he asked realizing he finally had my attention. I point to my eyes.

“Ah, eyes? But you can already see. With magi-sight I’d assume.” He said. I nod, but then hold both my hands up and move them up and down like a weight scale, and then cross my arms in a x like fashion. At that he cups his chin for a second and snaps.

“Ah, it’s not the same thing?” He said. I do weight scale motion again with a nod.

“Kinda? Hmm. Maybe try forming a voice. I’d love to be able to talk with ya. It’s hard carrying on these conversations by your self, haha.” He chuckled. At that, I pointed to my core, then my eyes, and held my hands parallel close together. Then I pointed to just my eyes and held my hands like before, then increased the distance between my hands until I couldn't reach any further.

“Ah, you wanna see further? Couldn’t you train your magi-sight? Eh just a thought. Any ways, I thought id let you know, I have some new golems made. You’ve seen em, they’ll be out hunting for you. You’ll have plenty to eat, without… dissolving… a hole in my coin purse!” he said laughing at his own joke. I slouched my shoulders at the lame joke but shook in silent laughter all the same.

I had seen the golems he was talking about. One looked like a wolf, and the other a man. They were basic in looks resembling mannequins. Unless he was talking about the arena models. I feel like he would take a while to make some more of those, since two of the five I know of got destroyed. I could also see him refining them if he made new ones. He doesn’t strike me as the character to just put out what was destroyed previously. He’s got his pride after all.

Pulling myself out of my thoughts, only having been a couple seconds, I look at him and point to my throat, and shrug. I know of vocal cords, but not enough to really do anything with or work off of.

“Ya Don’t know how to give your self a voice?” he asks. I wave my hand in a so-so fashion. I could just form a air sac in place of lungs, and play around with stands of membrane until something works. I just wish I had more to go off of.

“Well, I can't help much with that. I don't know how the voice works after all.” He shrugs as he gets up. I shrug as well and give him a thumbs up. He smirks and heads back off to his work station.

I return my focus back to my eyes. I focus on them, with the intent of getting visual feed back transmitted to my core. I did this for presumable till night, and then till morning, if Gizmo leaving for a long while and then returning is anything to go by. I feel drained in a way. It didn't feel like I was missing anything as far as mass would be considered.

“Well, I’ll be…” Gizmo said, coming over to greet me. I gave him a questioning head tilt.

“It looks like you did something. Hmmm.” He started. He was looking really closely at my face. I repeated my earlier motion. I don’t know what he’s hinting at, because I only feel mentally drained, and am still seeing with magic-sight, as Gizmo calls it.

“Those eyes are enchanted, but it doesn’t look like like your powering them. Do you know how to use mana?” he asks. I shake my head.

“Well, for humans and other folks like us, we have a sort of capacity in the immaterial plane, the magi-plane, not to be confused with the astral-plane. It’s one of many, normally, unperceivable planes. Having magi-sight, you are seeing by throwing your mana out, like a blind man swinging his cane around. Might I suggest either redirecting the mana you’re throwing out to use magi-sight, and run it into your eyes? Or you could just throw more mana into those eyes. It depends on your natural capacity to regenerate mana to your natural limit.” He suggested, pinching and twisting his mustache. The entire time he had his eyes close seemingly recalling the information.

I cup my hand to my chin and ponder that a moment, so this entire time I had been using mana like a walking cane. The source of that would obviously be my core. I focus on it, and feel for where the source might come from. Gizmo watched me to see what id no no doubt. I search through myself and think I find something, but it didn’t make sense.

I mimic Gizmo and snap, like he does when he realizes something or comes to a conclusion. Instead all the sound I made was a *splik*. He said it was a immaterial plane, so thats why I was having trouble. I was looking in my core. That’s the right place, spatially, but not dimensionally.

With that I focus on my core, but focus more on the plane my sight seems to come from. I didn’t even consider my current sight to be a magi-plane representation because my previous human experience seeing light from the physical plane. With that, things become much more clearer, I now loose “sight” but see other things, like a ball of mana sitting in my core. Not to mention Gizmo’s mana core, over lapping with his heart, and one in his head. Huh, heart and third eye it looks like. It’s in the right spot in his head, and seems to be projecting out of the middle of his brow.

I return focus back onto myself, and reel in the cloud of mana I see leaking from myself. I redirect that towards my eyes. And with that, I could see. Things where still blurry, but I know this was seeing with the eyes I made, and not magi-sight. I blink a couple of times.

“Looks like you found it out.” Gizmo said, adjusting his goggles. I nod my head vigorously. I think I actually feel excited? Accomplished? I don’t know but I can feel my outer membrane vibrating. I had to train myself to feel this in my last life. Any time I had accomplished anything, it just felt like I did what was expected. I’m happy this self trained response followed me to my core. And that! Im glad the snappishness, or rather, enjoyment of things working out for me, or beneficial things elicit this response from me.

I nod to Gizmo, realizing I hadn’t responded to him.

“Are ya in pain? Or excited? That shaking is new. It doesn’t look like your straining your mana, but be careful anyways.” He said, smiling at me. I hold up two fingers, bouncing up and down, stretching my body up and bouncing back down.

“Ah hah! That’s nice to hear! I understand the feeling too! Having a brake through is the best feeling for a magician! Hah!” he laughed. He joined me in my excitement.

“So what was it, how’d you enchant your eyes?” he asked, Smiling. I pointed to my head, and tapped my temple. Then I put my hands together and then spread them apart.

“Ya thought about it? Hmm… All night?” he said piecing it together. I nodded and pinched the membrane on my left arm, then pointing on at my head again.

“I’m a little lost…” he said. I showed him my arm, and made it opaque, then pointed to my eyes, then my head again. Then I pulled my finger to my core.

“Hmmm, you thought about being able to see with your eyes…. The same way you changed the texture of your skin… and connected the enchant to your core?” he finally pieced together. I do a so-so hand sigh and then nod happily.

“Well, that's a surprise, no magic circles? No rituals? You just… willed your eyes to be able to see?” he asked. I nodded, and then pointed to myself with a thumb, and then to my head. I then pretend to read a book, and point at my eyes.

“So you know how eyes work?” he asked. I gave him the so-so reply and nod.

“Well, I guess that’s why you have the sage title. Now I really want you to work on your voice. Maybe you can teach this old dog a few new tricks!” he laughed. He had decided to sit on the ground with me by this point.

We continued to communicate and I roughly get the point across that the eyes see with light, and the eyes tell the brain what it took in. It took a lot of charades, but he looked inspired and was ready to work on his new golems.
