Chapter thirty-six: Loud-mouth

“There is something. Can’t quite see it from here but looks like it has four legs. It appears to be alone.”

“Like a bird seeing the sky at last, our hero shoots out of the luscious forest into the more open fields.”

“Still a lot of large bushes and tall grasses. Way better visibility than in the forest, so I’ll take it.”

“In the distance, a few beasts can be found and many more hidden behind a flora or deceptive mounds.

These are the grounds upon which our hero will temper. Water to ice, sparks to flames, iron to steel, this is where our hero’s blood will bleed.”

“Really setting the mood. The atmospheric music is a nice touch.

I’m going to head towards that thing over there.”

“In our hero’s hand, a spell begins to form, slow and meticulous. Dirt gathers, turned to stone. The size of a finger.

After follows a sphere of water, it starts spinning, expanding on one side, forming a disc.

The subtlest of additions comes last in the form of wind, which further increase the speed of the spinning water, stretching it further, giving us a better view of the stone pebbles, acting as the spell’s core.”

“It’s beautiful, right? It came to be in a dream. A horrible nightmare involving a lot of sawblades.”

“Slightly trembling, our hero continues moving at his fastest speed. Readying his attack.

The beast-prey raises its head, most likely alerted by our hero’s wanton use of mana. As he gets closer, our hero sees how truly large this creature is.”

“Almost close enough.”

“The beast looks to be clad in both fur and scales, giving it an awkward appearance.”

“Awkward? The word is ugly.”

“After the beast notices our hero’s intentions, it roars with all its power, lightly lifts its two front legs before slamming them down.

The area quakes and would likely cause lesser experienced people to fall to their knees.”

“This is why preparing was so important”

“Of the ludicrous number of spells and abilities our hero conjured from his questionably active imagination, one was named |Water-treading|.

A rather convenient ability when treading on unsteady ground, and synergizes with the martial arts techniques; fluid steps”

“Still too far away, my effective range is still pretty awful.”

“Strange watery tentacles sprout from beneath our hero’s feet when they are a centimeter or three from the ground.

Like a launch pad they cause every step to lose firmness that comes with solid ground but effectively increase his speed and stability.

This ability just barely works due to his rather lightweight body.”

“Alright beastie! Try this bad boy out, Whirling water!”

“With all the power of a small boy, our hero attempts to throw his spell, the obvious movements would be easy to dodge.

It is fortunate for our hero, that the beasts has taken it upon itself to challenge the attack.”

“…”

“Raising its two stumpy front-legs, perhaps by wit or blind luck, its armored paws are efficient at defending from sharp attacks such as blades or this case, our hero’s spell.”

“What!? That’s cheating!”

“Erring on the side of caution, our hero has already begun gathering ambient mana and position himself at an optimal position.

The beast swipes with vigor at the incoming |Whirling water|. The force knocking it upright, revealing its awe inspiring height, casting a shadow five meters long.”

“It’s hurt! It’s bleeding!”

“A strange hiss erupts from the beast as it looks to its cut open right paw. The trusty scales ripped open by a combination of the spell’s shape and immense centrifugal force.”

“I can probably throw ten or so of these before I get too tired. Maybe less since I´ve been keeping up Water-treading.”

“Whilst attempting to circle around the beast our hero hurls another spell, leaving his prey with no other choice but to defend.”

“A few more should take it down.”

“Due to his lack of experience our hero projects a certain unlikeable arrogance paired up with a mocking smile.”

“Easy kill!”

“As the word leave his mouth, another roar is bellowed out. A brown-yellow light emitted and the air slightly disrupts.

The previously cast |Whirling water| has been reduced dramatically, making it easily blocked.”

“What was that? It has abilities?”

“With wild ferocity, the beast glares at our skimpy hero prancing around it.

It goes through the motions, appearing to be inhaling a monstrous amount of air, so deep and fast it feels like a strong gust had come through.”

“This can’t be good.”

“Without hesitation, our hero throws his third |Whirling water| and takes a decisive leap backwards, distancing himself even further.”

“Alright ugly, let’s see what you go.”

“The bloated creature looks on with furious anger before letting out yet another roar, a roar so primal it stirs even the most stables of minds. The brown-yellow air gushes towards our hero, rendering his spell inane.”

“Ehh…”

“Unable to even retort with his usual questionable wit, he launched himself like an arrow, assisted by water, wind and even the earth. Almost an ability by itself.”

“Holy what. What in the what was that.”

“The terrain ripped up in a cone, expanding as it stretched further from its origin. Despite this display of power, the beast lumps over, working hard to stand on its trembling legs.”

“You little shit! That could have killed me! My god, man.”

“With a cold-blooded grin, our hero conjures the fourth and last |Whirling water| and beheads the defenseless creature. Copious amount of blood gushes out, painting the ground red.”

“I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t expecting them to have spells or abilities, almost caught me off-guard.”

“Our hero lightly taps the body of the beast, having it vanish into his inventory. Presumably for later use.”

“Maybe we use the fur or something? I can probably cook the meat, bit too ugly to eat though. Right?”
