Chapter 98: The Grisly Truth Revealed

As Lynn pushed open the heavy metal door, the group was greeted with the sight of an expansive underground chamber that seemed to stretch on into the depths of darkness.

The air was frigid and damp, clinging to their bodies and chilling them to the bone. However, what truly overwhelmed their senses was the repugnant smell that filled the air - the unmistakable odor of decaying corpses.

Apprehension quickened their pulses as they cautiously stepped inside. Their footsteps echoed loudly, bouncing off the chamber's stone walls, intensifying the feeling of isolation and the weight of the unknown.

The further they ventured, the stronger the stench became. Several officers instinctively shielded their noses, trying not to gag as the smell overwhelmed them.

"Stay alert," Lynn advised, his voice reverberating slightly in the cavernous space. He swept his flashlight around warily, half expecting dangers to emerge.

The other officers nodded silently, their grips tightening around their weapons as they prepared themselves for any potential threats. Lynn's light served as a beacon, piercing through the darkness and allowing them to survey their immediate surroundings.

Without it, and given the fact that they had exhausted a significant portion, if not all, of their torch and lantern supplies to incinerate the previous monster, they would have been enveloped in complete and utter darkness.

As the beam of the flashlight illuminated sections of the vast space, an unsettling sight was gradually revealed. Scattered throughout were sturdy cages made of iron.

Some of these cages stood alone, while others were grouped. Each prison-like enclosure was constructed from sturdy iron bars, closely spaced together, creating a sense of impenetrability. A few still had their doors swinging open, emitting a haunting creak in the draft.

"This must be where that merchant kept his exotic animals," Lynn murmured, his eyes narrowing as the implications sank in. The cages were large enough to hold creatures of considerable size and strength.

He approached one of them for a closer inspection, which revealed a ghastly sight within. Lying crumpled in the corner was the remains of what appeared to have once been a human.

Stepping back swiftly, Lynn realized with a frown that this horrifying scene was not an isolated incident. As he and the others inspected each cage more closely, one by one, they revealed similar grisly scenes within—mangled and decomposing human corpses in varying states of decay. Some were little more than skeletons by now.

The gravity of the situation weighed heavily not only on Lynn but also on the officers accompanying him. Their expressions contorted with a mix of disbelief, horror, and unease.

Sheriff Cooper's face turned pale, taking on an ashen hue, as shock and revulsion coursed through him. He couldn't help but express his anger at the scene unfolding before him. His voice trembled with a mixture of disbelief and outrage as he uttered, "This is barbaric."

Meanwhile, Lynn, with a solemn expression on his face, had already started piecing together the puzzle. The gravity of the situation began to sink in as he connected the dots. He grimly remarked, " We've found the missing servants and staff members."

He finally had the answer to the question that had lingered since their arrival - where had the manor workers disappeared to? The horrific evidence was laid bare before their eyes.

These individuals hadn't simply been dismissed or sent away, as they had initially assumed. Instead, they had been imprisoned and mercilessly slaughtered, their lives callously extinguished within the confines of this underground menagerie.

Considering the state of the bodies, they probably served as food for the monsters, and maybe even as experiment materials for the mastermind’s strange research. The notion turned everyone’s stomach.

Lynn knelt near one of the complete corpses, and his extensive medical knowledge came into play as he meticulously assessed the time of death. Judging by the state of decomposition, it seemed this particular victim had perished approximately one to two weeks prior.

The process of decay was still in the intermediate stages, revealing distinct changes in the body's condition. Discoloration had set in, accompanied by the foul odor characteristic of decay.

His focused examination was abruptly interrupted when an officer urgently called for his attention. Startled, Lynn quickly turned toward the person who stood nearby. "What is it?" he asked.

The officer, visibly agitated, pointed frantically towards a nearby table that lay shrouded in darkness, its presence almost hidden from view. The beam of light from Lynn’s flashlight pierced through the obscurity, revealing a chilling tableau that sent shivers down everyone’s spine.

Spread out across its surface were various dismembered body parts - arms, legs, hands, and more. However, unlike the mangled corpses in the cages, these appeared fresher, with only hints of decay setting in.

Lynn's sharp eyes scanned the assortment of severed limbs critically. Although gruesome, it reminded him of the tidily organized displays found in medical school cadaver labs, each part carefully arranged for study.

But a critical difference set this macabre collection apart. Lynn noticed that some of the limbs seemed human, while others were distinctly inhuman, bearing anomalous characteristics.

One particular hand caught his eye. While five fingers were present, the skin was an ashen gray hue covered in tiny, overlapping scales. The nails were long, black claws that curved into sharp points.

His eyes widened as he scrutinized it. Although completely inhuman in appearance, the basic structure still recalled that of a normal human hand." Was it some sort of reptilian monster? Or perhaps a human artificially modified?” he murmured to himself.

The sheriff stepped forward to take a look. "Just what kind of diabolical experiments was that madman conducting down here?" Cooper asked, his voice tinged with anger.

Lynn's gaze lingered on the disturbing assortment of dismembered parts, his mind racing to unravel the significance behind this unsettling discovery. The inhuman hand was merely one piece of a larger, sinister puzzle.

"Experiments involving transplantation and integration of characteristics between different species," he started deducing, his voice grim. "The end goal seems to have been creating unnatural hybrid creatures."

He recalled the strange blend of attributes he had noticed during his previous examinations of the monsters he had encountered until now. The smiling creature exhibited an alarming mix of serpentine and insectoid features. Meanwhile, the bell monster showcased a variety of integrated offensive mechanisms within its bizarre anatomy.

At the time, Lynn's intuition had already hinted at the possibility of deliberate alterations and enhancements of creatures, but the sight that greeted him in this underground location solidified his deepest suspicions.

Although he didn’t completely explore this place, this area seemed to be where Knott, the mysterious figure he had been investigating, conducted his strange research.

Sheriff Cooper's expression darkened, matching the solemnity in Lynn's own eyes. "So the attacks we've faced have been tests of his deranged experiments," the sheriff concluded bitterly. The notion that innocent lives had been sacrificed by this disturbed individual ignited a simmering fury within him.

Lynn, sensing the sheriff's anger and frustration, placed a steadying hand on his shoulder. "Take comfort in the fact that after today, no more lives will fall victim to his machinations," he reassured firmly.

The area surrounding the table was strewn with a disarray of supplies and unfamiliar instruments. Among them were surgical tools, their purpose evident, and broken vials, their contents spilled.

A closer inspection revealed the lingering presence of dried blood on several blades and vial rims, suggesting they had been recently employed.

His gaze settled on an item that stood out from the rest. Lynn cautiously approached and carefully picked up the leather-bound journal, noting its aged and worn appearance. Tracing his fingers over the weathered cover, he sensed this small book held great significance.
