My Life... With a Twist
Chapter 4: Programming my life!

Chapter 4: Programming my life!

The smell of medicine and latex gloves permeate the air. Tons of people walk through the hallways, some in a rush, some depressed, and some joyful. One of them walks into a room, and is greeted by the scene of a sleeping mummified boy with a nurse standing by looking at him. The man stands at the door and lets out a cough to attract her attention. The woman immediately turns over.

The nurse admiringly stares at the owner of the voice. The man had dark blonde hair that reached his shoulders in an old fashion cowboy style. He was well built, around 40 years old, and had a lightly tanned symmetric face with a slight stubble. Around his neck was a closed locket along with a black and blue striped button-up shirt. With a bright smile  speaks out.

“Oh, hello there. You must be his-”

“I ain’t no one, just here to visit.” His voice was rough and had a thick southern accent. He stares at her as if trying to read through her thoughts and she just looks down awkwardly while holding her elbow.

“How is he?” The silence is broken and the girl lets out a breath of relief.

“He’s a strong kid. The doctors said it was a complete miracle that his bod-”

“How is he?” He gives her a stubborn look and she starts fidgeting nervously.

“He will be able to move by tomorrow.” She bows her head down and quickly walks out.

The man seemingly pretends she never existed and takes a seat next to the boy.

“I know you’re awake you lil’ bastard.”  The boy smudges his eyes and opens them slowly as if he just woke up.

“Oh, funny seeing you here old pops.” Erin lets out a shaky smile.

“Who’s old! This here man is still strong enough to beat you with his toes.” The man grabs the boys hair and scuffles it around.

“If you hit me I might just die!” Erin struggles to move his head away and the man lets go of his head. They both stay quiet for a few seconds then he speaks up again.

“How are the Jeffersons treatin’ you?” He leans back on the chair and puts his feat on Erin’s bed. Erin looks up as if trying to find a hidden meaning behind those words.

“Mom and Dad treat me just fine, although they are a bit strict on school.”

“You best do good in school, or I’ll-” The man is interrupted by the sound of his watch beeping.

"I know that sound..." Erin remembers his extreme hate towards that noise.

“I gotta go, I’ll see ya later boy. Oh and if anyone asks about what happened, tell them you don't remember.” The man slaps Erin on the knee and waves back as he walks out the door

Erin continues to stare at the doorway after the man left. Although he might have talked normally earlier, inside he’s still shocked and confused at what happened. It’s a mentally-numb state as if he’s watching a movie instead of actually living life. Did that really just happen? How am I still alive? How long was I out? Erin could only marvel at himself until finally-

'It's been three months, my dude.'

‘What does Light Yellow mean?’ Erin was hesitant to see the full status of his body.

‘Light yellow means your body just escaped disaster, or the red zone, and is healing. Light Green means your body wasn’t in top shape, and Green would mean you’re in good shape.’

‘I have so many questions…’ Erin lets out a breath of air and closes his eyes.

‘There’s a lot I don’t know either, but all we have is time so feel free to ask away.’

‘First of all, what exactly are you?’

‘I am you, but also independent. Think of it this way; if you were a computer, I would one of your processors or ‘cores.’ Right now I have control over the involuntary functions of your body, like your chemical secretion levels and your heartbeat.’

‘The status screen shows that there are seven other cores, what do I do with them?’

‘Give them a job to do. Even we only have speculations on how your power works. We only know what you know, but can see more than you do. All the things that you don’t have time to think about is easier than breathing to us. You'll see what I mean once you move into the soul.’

‘You make ‘the soul’ sound like a weird cult. I’m going to experiment with my powers. Can you still talk with the other cores?’

‘We can still communicate, yes.’

‘Show Computational Power’ Erin feels a strand of information enter his head.

‘I don’t think I will ever get used to this. The feeling of the information is so vague and it leaves me no chance to ponder on it. Maybe I can do something about it…’

‘Sweet! It isn’t much, but I can work with this. I just hope it works like I expect it to.’

‘Open Command Prompt’ Once again, Erin feels the slithering of information within his mind, this time in the form of an open space.

‘Log Start: Proper Visual Effects

Def Information(....)

If information = True:

‘Close Command Prompt. Looks like my programming class really came in handy this time!’

Erin spent what felt like hours within his mind, if it wasn’t for Core #1 then the only thing he would have gotten done was sleeping. Luckily the system also notified Erin when there was an error with his programming, or else Erin might have brought a disaster upon himself.

Within the dark space of Erin’s eye lids, a little blue screen pops up and disappears once Erin acknowledges it.

‘So much better. Before, it was so easy to lose track of everything; now I can slowly take my time looking through everything.

After a few minutes of investigating Erin figured out a couple of things.

One: Downloads are things that are being taken into the system.

Two: Uploads are most likely taken out of the system

Three: Programs are programs.

Four: Saved files are actually an organized compilation of his own knowledge.

Five: Memory Storage is actually a dimensional space with 14 meters of space!
