Chapter 4: Murder Snowballs

Chapter 4: Murder Snowballs

I backed up, the sound of heavy footfalls, the breathing, and snarling of what seemed like a massive creature filled the air, I was definitely not prepared to handle something like this, let alone fight it! So, I did what any sensible Hydra would do. I ran like a little bitch, yes, yes, I know I should stand my ground, but whatever that was… well, if it could have taken that deer out, then it would have no trouble taking down something less than half its size. Whatever it was, it started to chase me down, its footsteps in the snow rapidly approaching, my little legs just couldn’t go fast enough. I tried taking passing glances at whatever it was that was chasing me, but I was never able to get a good look. One time when I was looking back, I ended up tripping over a large rock, stubbing the hell out of my toes, and sending my rolling in the snow. I got back up as quickly as I could, but that’s when I felt one of my front legs get bitten.

I tried my best to shake whatever it was off, the thing is, whatever it was, it looked like a large snowball, about the size of a beach ball. At this point, I thought that it was some kind of weird parasite, finally using one of my abilities, to strike the creature, but my maw was quickly engulfed in snow-white fur, making me back off from it a little bit. The parasite bit down harder, but I retaliated with , slashing through the fur and hitting the creature right in its body. The creature let go and scampered away, leaving what looked like a canine-like bite mark. Before I had the chance to think about what had just happened, I felt two more bites one of my hind legs, and another one bit my other front leg. I let out a loud growl in pain, narrowing my eyes and rolling over, crushing them both below my body.

I stood back up, getting off of the flattened snowballs and staring at the large creature that was following me down, whatever it was, it was shrinking, wait, no, it wasn’t shrinking, it wasn’t a big creature at a- AH! Another one of them but right down on my far right head, I swiped it off as fast as I could. Weighting my options, I began to run again, both to think of a strategy and to buy myself time. I dropped the meat that I still had in my far left head’s maw and continued to run, The mass of snowballs stopped to eat it after I had dropped it, which gave me time to get some distance between me and them. After I had run quite a bit from the pack of snowballs, I rested against a tree, panting and sitting down. I was freezing, bleeding, and being tracked down by a pack of whatever the hell those were. I sighed and looked up at the sky, the moon was at its peak, midnight.

I rested there for a little while, a few hours maybe, I was both trying to make it so I didn’t freeze, sticking my fingers in my mouths to heat them up after clearing an area to lay down, By the time I was starting to get warm, the snowballs seemed to have tracked me down. I looked back from behind the tree after having smelled the scent of these murder balls approaching, and so I stood up, my stamina was almost depleted at this point. I could go in for a charge, and squash a few of them with my body, but the ones who make it out would be enough to overwhelm and kill me. I don’t have any skills that would be useful in a situation like this

I grit my teeth and start a mad dash in a direction, hoping that something would come up, but.. It was the opposite. I skidded to a stop, panting and looking down, I was at a sheer cliff… Damn it, I was still on the mountain! I look around, nowhere to go, nowhere to run, so I stand my ground, spreading out my body like a threatened animal would, staring down the snowball monster that was ahead of me.

That was until, the sun peeked over the horizon, Light starting from the tip of the mountain, where the Hydra had started his journey, all the way down to where we were, the standoff was excruciatingly long, but right as the mass of snowballs were going to attack, they noticed the light approaching. I saw their behavior change, instead of being in an attacking stance, they were resorting to scare tactics, making themselves look bigger but the newfound light made it so the illusion of the larger monster was broken, and because of this light, he got a good look at the creatures.. Wolves.. Little wolves. Small cat-sized wolves, covered in poofy fur, about 2ft long, like a huge body-sized afro, this made up about ⅓ of their total size, which was.. Pretty funny, not gonna lie.

Now that the nocturnal wolves were able to be seen, their surprise attacks were useless anymore, the two wolves sneaking up on both of my sides were exposed. I growled at the mass of fluff, giving my best ROARRRRRRRRRR, sending them scampering off with their tails between their legs, I swiped the one left of me towards the rest of the group with my tail, giving a prideful huff. This victory was quickly interrupted however. {Congradulations! The achievement: Wimp* has been gained. Reasoning: Run from a creature with less than half of your stats. Effect gained: [Sprint Lv2]}

…Well, I guess that’s comforting, as much as it can be really…”
