001 Nightmares part I

001 Nightmares part I

Inside a dimly lit room a young boy was quietly sleeping on the large bed. All across the floor shirts, pants and jackets of all colors and styles were scattered all around the room laid in a twin bed a small young boy of about fourteen years of age. His dark oak-brown hair ruffled from the evening bath the night before. The room had a simple decoration, with a wooden table adjacent to the bed. Scattered on the table are paper documents with scribbles of different speeches. Hanging from the chair is a brown leather scabbard attached to a holster.

Outside the room a maid, looking to be in her late teens’ early twenties, stands waiting in the hallway for her master to awaken to the morning call. Several minutes go by and she is getting more and more irritated at her young master and when she doesn’t hear the ruffling of her master out of the bed, she excuses herself in her mind and slams the door open, awakening the young boy with a scare.

- “Young master Will, is it good that you are sleeping on the day of master Mathil’s coronation?” Sabine asks angrily, knowing the person the young master is and how his father the king would react to this display in front of her. The startled boy, the second prince of Aclan, Will Marlow, is now sitting in his bed and is staring at the young maid with an annoyed expression.

- “Sabine, you can’t scare me like that! I know that it’s brother Mathil’s coronation today, but the ceremony is in the afternoon, I have plenty of time before it.” Will answers the now angry-looking maid who seems to not appreciate the reason for his late sleeping.

- “Young master, you still have a lot of tasks to prepare before the ceremony. You need to choose the proper clothing, help welcoming the noble families and be hospitable to the heirs and heiress of the other families.” Sabine explains.

Understanding the loss in the fight Will drags himself out of bed and puts on his ceremonial clothing. A white shirt underneath a royal blue jacket with golden embroidery and on his chest an embroideredcoat of arms of his family house, two swords crossed with a red and blue background. Pairing that with black pants with golden embroidery that connects to the golden embroidery on the jacket and on his hip, he attaches his personal short-sword, a silver blade, eighty-five centimetres in length, with runic etches along its blade. As is tradition in Aclan heirs to a noble family are given two swords on two separate ceremonies, one when they reach seven years of age and the second one when they reach adulthood at fifteen. This is due to the famous martial art of Aclan form sword arts, which requires a short sword in the off-hand and a longsword or a bastard sword in the main hand to deal quick slashes and thrusts in combat.

- “Young master, since you are not an adult yet your father the king has sent a ceremonial sword to use during the ceremony.” Sabine interrupts while Will is finishing holstering the blade to his hip as she leaves the room towards the corridor. She returns a few moments later with a sword covered by a blue and red cloth and Sabine gives the blade to Will. looking at the covered blade he unwraps the knot, removing the cloth from the sword as it falls to the ground and in his hands a beautiful steel sword, one metre in length with a dark-brown hilt and a blue pendant hanging from the pommel.

- “This blade is beautiful Sabine; I have to thank father after the ceremony.” Will exclaimed with joy and attaching the steel sword at his hip crossing with his short sword, similar to their family’s coat of arms.

Finishing putting on his swords and pinning a golden medal on his chest, two silver stars symbolising his position as the second son of the family, he looks at Sabine and asks if he looks cool.

- “You look elegant young master, just remember to be presentable to the other heirs and heiress to find maybe a suitable fiancée after the ceremony.” Sabine answers joyfully, hoping that the young master can have heirs to further the royal family in the next generation.

- “Sabine, you know that I don’t want to marry anyone yet, it is brother Mathil’s duty to produce an heir, I should focus on my swordsmanship and join the army.” Will exclaims with dissatisfaction at the mention of a fiancée, knowing that his only chance of reputation will come from the army or a mercenary band and not in the royal family.

Noticing the change in mood from the young master, Sabine asks Will if they should head towards one of the balconies to look at the garden where the ceremony is held. Will agrees and the scurry along, leaving the bedroom and heading in the hallway towards the balconies. On the way they walk past a large painting of a knight with two shining blades standing atop a cliff, beneath him are what seems to be an endless horde of monsters and bewinged creatures from the fairy tales.

- "Sabine I have a question, I have seen this painting almost everyday but no one has ever told me story of who the person is, do you know anything?" Will asks Sabine, hoping that maybe a story will make him forget the idea of looking for a potential partner.

- "Of course I know the story of Tíriel Cad Marlow, the ancestor and first head of the Marlow family. Your second name is taken from this legendary figure. According to myth, during the Age of Light when Cyril, the mother of life, was kidnapped and the siege of Balaam was taking place, one of the paladins of Sol, your ancestor, had to lead a charge at an impossible horde of enemies to give time for the four great celestials to infiltrate the fortress. He led a charge consisting of hundreds of paladins of Sol and Cyril and managed to give the celestials enough time to enter unnoticed by the forces of Balaam. He survived the enemy attack with the inch of his life along with eleven other paladins and Cyril rewarded their accomplishment by giving them each a piece of land on Terrum and they each created a house and today children of the royal family born in the month of Aguli, the month of Tíriel, are given the name Tíriel in their name to honor their ancestor." Sabine explains the story of her young master's ancestor and why he is fighting the horde.

She look over towards Will and she notices that his blue eyes are transfixed on the legendary figure, he then turn towards Sabine and asks her if he himself can become a legendary figure like Tíriel.

- "You never know young master, train even more and gain more experience, and maybe then you will lead your own army and fight like your ancestor." Sabine answers, hoping that Will doesn't become dissatisfied with the answers. But when she look at him again she notices that the young master have a glimt of determination and Sabine let out a small chuckle at the reaction.

- "Come now young master, we don't have much time until the ceremony, if you want to see the garden we have to leave now:" Sabine points out. Will comes to his senses and follow Sabine in the hallway towards their destination.
