Chapter 6

Chapter 6

The morning sunlight came into view and the small inn room was showered in a warm golden hue that engulfed it. A bed and a small wooden desk were the only furniture inside the room that greeted the warm light.

Elvyra sat on the desk that was in the room, she dipped her ink pen and began to fill the piece of paper that was in front of her with tales about her journey so far. Her heart brimmed with excitement as she wrote to her mother. Her partner Dino, slept peacefully by her side, resting with its tail curled around its body.

Elvyra wrote about the inn where she found herself this morning as she waited for the tournament to start. She wrote about the amazing food she ate from the beastman, and she had to agree with the tales that said that the beastman food was the best in all of Monstro Island, for it was the most delicious food she had ever eaten. The black ink flowed as she continued to recount her adventures and the friend she had made, Ace. The friendliest human she had ever met, who without his help, she would not have come so far in her journey in Monstria City. She decided to omit the rude humans she had come across to spare her mother’s undue worry. Besides, it was not the last time she would come across such rudeness.

“I’m close to finding her, Mom,” she wrote, deciding to not mention the tournament as well. She knew how her mother viewed taming battles.

Finally, after writing her last words in the letter to her mother. She carefully sealed the letter, preparing it to be sent on the winds of Monstro’s Island diligent mail bird, Skylar, a trusted messenger for the island.

Elvyra gazed out the window that was in the small inn room, taking a moment to embrace the beauty of the morning that had come to signal the start of one of the most important days in her journey thus far.

“Dino,” the small green dinosaur Monstro said, as it let out a yawn, as it awoke from its sleep.

“Ready?” Elvyra said, smiling at Dino as she grabbed her taming staff.

She looked at her tamer ID, her green eyes glowing, for it was a treasure worth more than gold to her.

It had been a dream since she was a kid to be a tamer, ever since she saw that stranger clad in black inside the elven forest that day, with his Monstro partner by his side. A dragon Monstro just like Dino and the only one of its kind she had ever seen. She looked at Dino and wondered if it too would one day ascend into such a form as that mysterious man's partner.

“Dino,” Dino said, as it smiled at Elvyra,

“Let’s do this partner,” Elvyra said, petting its head. Right now was not the time to daydream about such possibilities.

“Good Morning," Ace said, as she met Elvyra coming down the stairs of the inn.

“Morning,” Elvyra said,

"How was your sleep?" Ace said, as he stretched his arms, the bed of the inn leaving its traces on his body, which he did not welcome at all.

"It was alright," Elvyra said.

Ace raised an eyebrow as he looked at Elvyra and saw no such discomfort at all,

"Must be an elve thing," he thought, remembering how he had heard that sometimes elves slept on the ground by the elven forest, for she did not look as if the bed had been an issue for her as it had been for him.

"Is everything alright?" Elvyra asked,

"Dino," Dino asked as he looked at Ace with a puzzled expression.

"No, everything is fine," Ace said,

“We should get going, we don’t want to be late on our first day.”

"Agree," Elvyra nodded.

They both walked out of the inn and toward the Colosseum, on their way there, Elvyra noticed all the different tamers that were making their way to the entrance as well. She looked up and saw the grand Colosseum and noticed that it looked as if it was touching the sky itself. It looked quite majestic to her almost like the great trees in the elven forest by her village.

“The Tower of Tamers,” Ace said, smiling as he looked up at the tower.

“Is where tamers test their taming battle skills. “

“Is that where Aria is?” Elvyra said, remembering why she was here in the first place. This wasn’t just a taming dream for her, she was here on a mission by Gaia the goddess of Monstro Island. A great responsibility entrusted by her.

“That’s where the champion awaits, so we don’t have time to waste, shall we? “ Ace said smiling as they both headed toward the entrance of the Colosseum.

***

“Ticket number?” A large man said as Ace and Elvyra arrived at the entrance of the Colosseum, by his side stood a large minotaur monstro, its eyes leering at them both.

“Here you go,” Ace said, giving his and Elvyra’s number to the man.

“Very well,” he said, as he moved out of the way to let them pass.

As Elvyra entered the Colosseum, she couldn’t help but be in awe as she noticed the large tower-like structure to the far distant as well as people gathered around what appeared to be an arena.

“The Tower of Tamers brings quite the crowd, but don’t worry, the first battles aren't in the tower, so you won’t battle there, yet,” Ace said,

“What do you mean?” Elvyra said as she held her tamer staff tightly. This was it, she couldn’t fail, for both herself and Gaia.

“The first battle takes place in the other arenas inside the Colosseum since the main arena is for when the tamers engaged in the final battle of elimination. Follow me I’ll show you,” Ace said, they both walked to one of the openings, where a small empty arena greeted them. There was nobody but other tamers with their tamer staff.

“This is where the first battles take place, and now we wait for our numbers to be called.”

***

Elvyra sat patiently waiting for her number as she saw other tamers engaged in fierce battles, putting everything on the line as well. She held her staff tightly and hoped that she was strong enough, no, she needed to be strong enough, this wasn't just a tournament for her, she had to win no matter what.

“Number 151! Number 151!” an announcer voice said. Every tamer in the arena looked around trying to find the tamer number 151, unbeknownst to them that it belonged to a young girl who was too deep in thought to hear her number being called upon.

“That’s you isn’t it?” Elvyra turned to her side, where one of the tamers from the tournament was sitting next to her. She was a beastman girl, she had short brown hair with her beast man ears poking out on top of her hair, and her tail floating behind her.

“Y-yes,” Elvyra said, looking at her number and getting up quickly, and apologizing, as she made her way to the arena to face her opponent. She looked to the other side and saw Ace, coming into view, he nodded at her and smiled. She had watched Ace battle and he was a natural, dominating his opponent with ease.

And now it was her turn to battle.

“You think she’ll be alright, that elf girl?” Elvyra heard whispers as she made her way to the arena,

"Aren’t Elves usually against taming?”

She had heard the stories about elves and their opinion of taming, they were not fond of it, for they viewed it as a dangerous and primitive art. They preferred to coexist with Monsters instead of using them as weapons. But she was different, she had loved taming.

Elvyra looked at her opponent, a human farm villagers. He looked to be around her age, perhaps a bit older, he was wearing a straw hat and a leather brown tunic.

“Ready ear girl,” he said, smirking at her.

“Both tamers ready?” an announcer said, and they both bowed their heads.

"BEGIN!”

“GO DINO !” Elvyra said, and Dino appeared from her staff.

“GO FOREARM!” the villager said, and a humanoid monster appeared in front of him. It had a rock-like body and a large muscular arm while the other one was skinny.

“He looks strong,” Elvyra said, it was the first time seeing that kind of monster, in fact, it was the first time seeing a lot of monsters, but she and Dino were strong.

“Dino use bite!” Elvyra said, and Dino dashed toward the monster, Forearm.

“Too easy,” the villager said,

“Dodge it and use heavy punch.”

Forearm dashed to the side, dodging Dino’s attack, and then dashed toward Dino.

“WATCH OUT! DINO !”

Dino jumped to the side, trying to avoid forearm’s punch, but still getting hit slightly.

“Are you okay?’ Elvyra asked, worried about her partner.

“D-Dino,” Dino said, shaking off the damage, its dragon ancestry giving him the strength to take such a hit, and ready to go again and prove he could win.

“Use claw attack,” Elvyra said, and Dino dashed at Forearm, ready to inflict damage.

***

Ace watched as Elvyra and Dino were being dominated by her opponent.

“This fight is over,” the young beastman girl said, putting her hands behind her head.

“Pity.”

“She’s right,” Ace thought, Elvyra still had the movements of a brand-new tamer, perhaps it was too early for her to try and compete in the tournament. Though he did wonder why she was so eager to participate, wondering just what elf troubles Aria was in.

***

“Use max punch,” the village tamer said, and his monster obeyed, gathering himself and dashing toward Dino with its muscular arm flying toward Dino.

"WATCH OUT !” Elvyra said as it watched helplessly as Dino was sent flying to the wall of the arena.

“It appears that this battle is over, the winner is Sam of the Village of Stone,” the announcer said.

Elvyra rushed toward Dino, as it lay on the floor.

“There you have it tamers, the first battles are over but the fight is not over yet, for every loser today still has a chance to advance toward the tamer of towers.”

***

“Is okay Elvyra,” Ace said, trying to console Elvyra for her loss as they both sat in the arena as other taming battles were going on.

“You’re right,” Elvyra said, as she petted Dino, having recovered from their loss.

“You only lost one match, you just need to win the last two and you’ll get to advance to the tower of tamers. We just need to practice.”

“Thank you,” Elvyra said, glad to have such a good friend like Ace with her on this journey. And she wasn’t going to give up yet, she needed to win, for not only herself but for Gaia as well.
