Ch 3 Protect

The citizens of Rotenburg set up a festival secretly, since if Lord Beltos found out, he might cancel it. Thankfully, Villager A and Villager B had some ideas.

"My Lord, what would you think about a celebration?"

"Waste of time and money."

"Ahh…haha! No worries, we were just looking towards a day of rest, since the last harvest will arrive soon."

"Oh, that's correct. Hmm…sure, but if the next day people aren't fit to work, you'll be punished instead. For each person, mind you. Get back to work."

"Yes, sir!"

Villager B looked at Villager A with pity.

"Don't look at me like that, I will make sure you're included!"

The town requested a traveling group of entertainers to come by, but there was some difficulty. There wouldn't be any money of course. Thankfully, one group agreed for the free food and a place to sleep.

Since it was only for one night, after all.

Villager C's cookies were passed around, and people enjoyed the music and merriment. At one point, Lord Beltos joined in, however, it was only for a cookie. He looked solemn as he listened to one of the songs.

The bards weren't paying attention, as they were too engrossed in their playing.

The song was about the initial collision between the humans and the Demons. There was bloodshed and violence, leading up to the Gods calling upon the legendary Hero of another world. The Demon King was defeated and the world saw peace for a couple hundred years.

Some of the villagers were sober enough to give warning glances at Villager A and Villager B, but they were too drunk to realize.

Villager C, however, was not.

When she saw Lord Beltos leave, she tried to follow him. However, several Kobold Guards stopped her.

The next day, people were nursing their hangovers while trying to walk in a straight line. They wanted to take medicine, but since it also had magic dust, they were afraid of getting drunk again.

Villager A and Villager B were crying to each other, waiting for punishment.

But Lord Beltos never left the castle. In fact, for three days, he never stepped outside.

The three approached the castle and were about to call for Lord Beltos when they remembered the second rule.

Don't bother him unnecessarily.

They returned to their posts. Some of the newcomers were being obstinate. They came from a different town, so they were used to having extra money in their pockets. Why did they have to give it all up?!

Somehow, this was what got Lord Beltos out of the castle.

"You don't want to work? Leave."

"Haah?! We live here, you Demon!"

The thuggish group was eyed with disdain by all the natives.

‘Causing trouble, just see how the Lord rips you a new one.'

They had already welcomed the Demon who saved them.

"No, you can only live here if you work."

"But we work, why should you get the money?!"

"Hmm…fine. Then don't blame me when a stray beast comes and kills you. You aren't under my protection from now on. You're not allowed to work anywhere inside the town walls and must live outside as well."

"Psh, whatever."

The group left, but the next day, a mess awaited them. Indeed, the Goblins never patrolled that area. They were told not to. Several critters had made their way onto their field and caused chaos. Their crops were ruined and the smell had attracted a large beast.

The group fled to the town wall, but the Goblins and Kobolds denied them entry. The group was killed in front of everyone. But no one was scared. In fact, when the Goblins surrounded the large bear, they were cheering.

"Get back to work!"

""""Yes, sir!""""
