“Why are some of the races labelled as unavailable?” I ask.
“Well, for the Dragons, my request to Tiamat, the Dragon Goddess, for permission to create a Dragon body was denied with the words, ‘Do it and I’ll devour that planet you’re so proud of’.”
“A bit harsh.”
“I know right? She’s always been like that, thinking that her creations are the greatest thing in the Universe.” He sighed. “Moving on to the Watchers, they are the property of Lore. If I even thought about creating one of them, he would know, and make me clean his entire library as punishment.”
“That’s it? That doesn’t seem that b- “
“It’s Infinite.”
“…What?
“It’s Infinite.” He repeated. “It never ends. I could be cleaning it for 10 Billion years without making any progress whatsoever. The beings punished by Lore are never seen again, sentenced to clean his library for eternity. Interesting fact, after death, Julius Caesar’s soul was taken by Lore to suffer that very punishment for the burning of the library of Alexandria.”
“Good riddance, I have always hated that guy. The very thought of all that lost knowledge has filled me with anger on many an occasion.” I can feel it happening now just thinking about it.
“As it should. Now, lastly, we have the Ravagers. It is impossible for an intermediate God of Creation like me to replicate a race that has no soul.”
“Hold on,” I interrupted. “Ravagers have no soul? Is that why they can’t use this ‘System’?”
“Hoh, that’s a good question… one that I don’t have the answer to, I’ll ask Corren about that. To answer your question, no, Ravagers do not have souls. Souls were created by two of the Aspects, Life and Death. As the Ravagers are from a Dimension outside of the Universe they are not subject to the Laws of the Aspects, such as souls or the System.”
“Am I allowed to know all of this? All of that sounds like forbidden knowledge.”
“Don’t worry, It’s actually pretty common knowledge. Most worlds even have it as a subject in their basic education. Enough about this now, choose you race already, it’s taking a lot of power to keep you here.”

I do a Shaun says and think about my choices, with the Dragons, Watchers and Ravagers unavailable, that just leaves Psi-Humans, Elves, Orcs, Kobolds, Lycanthropes, Jötunn and Demons. There is also that custom option, but that warning about the chance of death, if that is even possible, is unpleasant. I’m already a dead, does it mean that my soul could be destroyed?
Straight away I decide to ignore the Psi-Human, Orc and Kobold races, I’ve already been a Human and it was a bad enough experience the first time. The Orcs… I don’t want to be a slave, plus, there is magic! Why would I become a muscle brain when I could be shooting fire balls or throwing lightning bolts!
The Kobolds, err… I don’t want to be a lizard. I bet all my sentences would in ‘-sss’.
“Death to all Humanssss!”
“Huh? You say something?”
“N-no…”
Ahhh! How embarrassing! Thank Shaun he didn’t hear me. Probably.
Back to my choices, starting with the Elves. Honestly, they sound like an evil version of the Elves I know of, and although I don’t have a problem with that, I am a fan of the World Tree mythology. Their attempt at harming it is sacrilege.
At first glance, the Lycanthropes seem like a great choice, with their impressive racial bonuses and ability, but constantly being on the verge of losing control and reverting to their past insane selves is too big of a burden for me.
The Jötunn, the Frost Giants of myth? Although it is tempting to be a 5-meter-tall, ice wielding, walking disaster, the constant fear of being hunted by the Ravagers would wear on my mental health.
The Demons, this is the race I am most likely to choose, even if you exclude their amazing racial bonuses, the opportunity to fight in a war against the Dragons is very alluring. Plus, the eventual control of the Gate might be my only way off Hoirus.
The final choice, Custom. Despite the warning of death, the opportunity to be a new, never seen before race, is highly appealing. With the Primordial energy within my soul, I might even end up as a Titan, how cool would that be!
