Chapter 14: Fuck You Murphy!
Looking all around, Nevan only found this guy sleeping relaxedly in the chair. So he decided it was his noble duty to wake up this happily sleeping guy. As for him having deep bags under his eyes which indicated sever lack of sleep, his wellbeing wasn't even considered.
"Oi, wake up." Nevan put his hand on his shoulder and shook him.
"Ahh! There's an invasion? I will get hammer!" The guy woke up in a fright, took a battle posture and muttered something that Nevan couldn't make sense of.
"Eh! Where's this? Where's the invasion?" They glasses guy looked puzzled why he wasn't being attacked and looked about in search of clues.
1 second.
2 second.
3 second.
"Oh! Yes yes. I am safe now." Realizing he was not on a battlefield, the glasses guy exclaimed with joy.
"Erm, Excuse me. Where's this place?" Nevan inquired after realizing that the guy seemed to have recovered from his daze.
"Oh yes. You are the student. Hello, the name's Renoy, Renoy Leager. I am currently an intern working in the neuro-virtual reality department in Oztech Corp. Hehe, are you shocked? That's right, I am working on 'The' Oztech Corp. The number 1 virtual reality tech giant in the world!" The glasses guy Renoy was surely an energetic chap. He sprouted loads of info in one go.
Let alone shocked, Nevan actually had a blank expression. The only useful thing he got from the bombardment of words was this guy's name. As for the number 1 virtual tech giant, well all companies claimed themselves as the best. He couldn't care less. And besides he had heard the name Oztech for the first time.
Seeing Nevan's blank look, Renoy instead was shocked. "What the hell! You don't know Oztech? The Oztech?"
"I am not interested in virtual reality crap. It's for people who are tired of reality and wants to escape. I haven't even seen the world yet." Nevan disdainfully replied.
"Oh, I see. You are one of those reality supremacists. You guys really are stubborn and narrow minded imbeciles." Renoy didn't hide the apparent disgust that he felt for the reality supremacist people. "You need to understand kid, virtual reality is not all about-"
"Hello, Excuse me, Can I come in?" Renoy's passionate explanation came to an immature end as a girl around the same age as Nevan entered the room. Yes she entered the room and had already closed the door. But she was polite enough to ask for permission despite not caring whether she got permission or not.
"Why are you even asking?" both Nevan and Renoy had this thought but didn't voice it out.
The girl came to them, looked at Nevan and then looked at Renoy. She then handed Renoy a piece of paper saying, "Exam for Mahou Shoujo Magic Academy."
"OK, come with me." Renoy received the paper and led the girl to a capsule. He opened it and said to the girl, "Lie inside. Your exam is called 'Emotion and Strength'."
"I understand, I already knew of it." The girl briskly replied.
"Oh, saves me the trouble of explaining. Lie inside and your test will begin."
The girl then lied down inside the capsule and it automatically shut down. What was happening inside was a mystery to Nevan.
"Emotion and Strength? What sort of shady test is that?" Nevan had a huge doubt about the content of the test.
"Don't worry. Nothing can compare to what your test will be." seeing Nevan's suspicious gaze Renoy smiled. Thinking of the things that this reality supremacist will experience his mouth carved into a devilish grin. "Hehe, kid, tell me, have you heard of Murphy?"
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Nevan got a bad premonition. His heart started beating faster. "The 'Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong' Murphy's law Murphy?"
"Yes, exactly. The 'Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong' Murphy's law Murphy." Renoy's face was all smiles as if very happy that Nevan knew it.
"Wha- What's that got to do with my test?" Nevan stuttered.
"Of course there's a relation. Because the test you will be taking is called 'Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong'."
"Surely you are joking."
"I am afraid I am not."
"Isn't there anything else that I can take?"
"I am afraid there isn't."
'This demon! Is this his revenge just because I don't agree with his perspective?' Nevan wondered.
Renoy grabbed the side rim of his glasses and adjusted it and said, "If you were taking a specific academy exam then it'd been different. Since you are taking the combined exam, the best one is Murphy's test. It tests your mental ability to cope with crisis. Now, don't be a wuss, get inside a capsule."
Nevan was forced to enter a capsule against his reluctance. Lying inside, he couldn't help but worry.
"Hey kid, a piece of advice. Don't worry too much. What you are imagining won't happen." Hearing Renoy's words seemed to give some hope to Nevan's eyes.
Then he saw the devilish curved mouth of Renoy, "What you can't imagine will happen." With a wicked grin Renoy closed the capsule lid.
In Nevan's mind the terrifying smile of Renoy kept flashing. Shit shit shit!
"Nevan, don't worry too much. That four eyes is just being petty. It's just a stupid Murphy. No need to be scared. Besides, we are here. We can easily deal with whatever shitty ploy this test can bring out." Black Nevan courageously voiced his opinion.
"You are wrong. Didn't you notice what he said? Neuro-Virtual reality. It's most probably virtual reality that is directly created inside the brain. Not by the 5 sensors. Which means we won't know what's happening inside the virtual reality and therefore will be unable to provide any help." White Nevan spoke out the worst possibility for Nevan.
While White Nevan and Black Nevan are inside Nevan, they could only experience the world through Nevan's sensory organs. But it was only related to hearing and seeing.
Basically the two of them could only watch and listen what Nevan would. The touch, the smell and the taste were outside of the sharing jurisdiction. So was the nervous system.
If what the heavily sleep deprived sadist had said was correct then it was very possible that the virtual reality will be created directly within the neural system. So they would not be able to understand what will happen inside the reality that Nevan will experience.
Nevan could only sigh. A series of tubes with sucker head came and attached them to his head.
A sweet gas was released making Nevan feel at ease. Unknowingly he fell asleep.
….
When Nevan woke up he found himself inside a room. It was a traditional wooden room. Floor, wall, ceiling all made of woods.
A floating screen appeared in front of him. "Welcome to virtual reality world Murphy. You are taking a test in this world, therefore you are only given the body and ability of a adult human with no special powers. You need to survive in this world as long as possible. The longer you survive, the greater your score.
Surviving in this world does not mean not dying. You can die in this world. But you will still survive. You will be only considered unable to survive if your brain stimulation reaches a certain threshold. So the more calm you stay, the longer you will be able to exist in this reality. Good luck."
After displaying it, the screen banished.
"So that's how it is. I need to remain calm amidst the crisis. It's right up to your alley Whitey." Nevan informed the details of the test to White and Black Nevan.
"Maybe. I am not sure if I can remain collected in a Murphy's world." White Nevan replied.
"I am really interested in what Murphy's world has to offer. Hehe, don't disappoint me Murphy." Black Nevan excitedly added.
It was true that Nevan and Black and White Nevan couldn't see what was happening inside neither would they be able to provide much help, since they couldn't understand what was going on inside at the exact moment.
The connection between them still remained by which they could communicate. Their connection was invincible. They could connect to each other and talk. Till now, they had yet to find any restriction on this point. They literally always were with each other.
"Please proceed outside. The test begins now." A mechanical voice sounded.
Nevan took a step forward, stepping on the floor. His right leg pressed on the wooden board of the floor and an instant later, the board went downward because of his weight. His leg also went down, almost tripping him. Just as he realized what happened and what's going to happen-
*smack*
His face was hit hard by the other end of the wooden board that flipped towards him with great momentum.
Nevan held his nose in pain. You couldn't have been serious. There was no way this was possible. This was a scene from a cartoon!
"Haha, to think they would use such a cliche scene of getting banged by the wooden board that you step on. It's the immortal scene of cartoons, to think they would use such things here." Black Nevan laughed after learning the situation. He laughed so hard that it seemed he might cry from laughter.
"Wow, can't believe they would go to such lengths. There may be more of such comical cliche scenes. Be careful Nevan." White Nevan gave Nevan a warning. He wasn't laughing at the situation but instead seemed to be worried about how to survive.
This time as Nevan stepped on those wooden boards he made sure to test whether they were strong enough and whether they would flip upside down. With great caution, Nevan finally made it to the door.
"Have you arrived at the door?" White Nevan.
"Yes." Nevan.
"Don't open the door completely. Usually if you open the door totally then something will come flying straight at you and knock senses out of you." Black Nevan.
"So?" Nevan.
"Twist the knob, open the door slightly and get beside the door and peek through the little opening." White Nevan.
"Remain vigilant. Make sure you you don't lean on the wall beside the door. The region beside the door are also very dangerous in cartoons." Black Nevan.
How miserable! The simple act of opening a door now required too much cautiousness. This was Murphy's world.
Nevan twisted the knob, peeked through the opening and waited for something to happen while looking outside. Nothing happened and he couldn't see the outside completely either. So he let the door open completely while still remaining beside the door.
Yet nothing happened. A giant hammer wasn't outside to smash the shit out of someone when they opened the door. An army of soldiers weren't standing with guns locked into the door so that they could tear open holes the moment someone opened the door. A giant dragon wasn't waiting outside to burn someone to crisp the moment they opened the door.
With a sigh of relief. Nevan stepped outside. He was out of this house. Seeing what was in front of him made his face go white. The thing that was waiting for him outside wasn't a hammer, an army or a giant dragon.
"Fuck You Murphyyy!" was the last thing Nevan could scream before he was smashed by a giant meteorite that engulfed everything.
