Prologue
In most epic tales of fantasy, magic, and adventure, there is a common thread: it generally involves a hero who is introduced but has no clue as to his destiny. Through circumstances beyond his or her control, something dramatic occurs which thrusts them into circumstances far beyond the scope of anything they had even dreamed of encountering before.
Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
Through luck and determination, the hero survives the awakening to their powers, finding themselves meeting someone mysterious and powerful who can further direct their tale: a guide, mentor, or some other type of being who points the hero in the right direction so that they stand a chance of fulfilling their destiny while leaving the outcome uncertain.
The hero then reluctantly chooses to continue on the path laid before them, fighting through trials of adversity and often joining others who shed new light upon different aspects of the hero’s plight or character. With the help of these encouraging friends, the hero finds a way to battle through countless battles, deals with inescapable hardships and sorrows until finally able to surpass their limits and expectations by surrendering to their fate.
But this is not your typical tale of magic and heroism. This story does not have quite such an amazing tale, nor a hero who overcomes a horrific final enemy to save the lives of those he loves. But it still needs a beginning, and it still needs a hero, and it just so happens that the hero of this tale has suffered a lifetime of disability and lost opportunities while somehow still maintaining the will to live and the ability to enjoy life, in no small part due to the love of his family.
This story starts on a warm summer day on the planet Earth in the year 2010 with a young couple who vow to give their newborn child the best life they possibly can. They take upon themselves the challenges of having a child with a physical disability, knowing full well the ever-mounting physical and financial hardships they and their child will face.
This is the story of that child.
