Inspector Michael's POV: Continued: Part 2
I reached the place of the incident. A constable was waiting for me at the entrance. I recognized him as the new constable Rajesh who had joined last month.
“Hi, Rajesh. So how is the situation here? And what do we have so far?”
“We have contained the place well. We are also trying to make sure no one knows about the news as much as we can."
"As for what we know, the two victims were found early morning by the person who cleans the area. The victimes are a boy and a girl. They could have been friends or a couple. They have been taken to the hospital. There seems to be some hope for the boy. Not so sure about the girl.”
“How about their wounds?”
“The girl was stabbed in her heart. She lost a lot of blood. The boy appears to be stabbed from his back. And he seems to have a serious injury on his head as well.”
“So, what do you think happened?”
“It is still too early to assume what happened. But this is what I think could have happened. We have found two vehicles parked outside the entrance to the peak."
"So we assume they came separately with plans to meet here late at night after closing time. Couples tend to come here late at night despite the ban. I guess someone must have followed them in a separate vehicle to this place. When the couple was distracted, the assailant must have sneaked upon them and stabbed the boy from the back. Once the attacker felt he was taken care of, he or she must have attacked the girl next."
"The assailant must have left in the vehicle after that. As this place far away from the city to leave on foot.”
“What about the injury on the boy's head?"
“We think when he got stabbed, he must have fallen and hit the corner of the sitting benches. Most of these benches are made of slabs and have pointy corners. The wound on his head looked a bit deep and serious.”
“Any tire tracks of the possible third vehicle or any other clues?”
“There was a lot of rain today morning around 4 am. It has washed away any tracks if it was there. It also washed away a lot of blood down the cliff. The scene itself is not very accurate at this point and not very helpful for our investigation.”
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
“Luck does not seem to favour us. The assailant should have come by car like you said, as it is not possible to come or leave by foot from here. But now, after the rain, I don’t think it will be possible to separate any unique tire tracks from the normal visitor's one. Anyways let’s check out the scene.”
We walked to the edge of the peak. This was the most popular spot on the hill, and there were many slab benches around the place. The team had highlighted the site where the bodies were found. It was near the bench that was at the edge of the cliff, close to the railings.
“Anything new?”
I asked one of the other constable present at the scene, whose name I was having trouble remembering.
“Yeah, we have found traces of blood on the corner of the bench near which they were found. We think this is where the boy hit his head. Most probably, he fell from the force of the stab from behind.”
I gave one more look at the scene and had a feeling that the press was going to have a field day with this. I’ll have to sort this out as soon as possible.
“Ok, I’ll head over to the hospital now. Is there anything else I should know or see before I leave?”
“There are the 2 cars that were left outside.”
“Yeah, lets have a look at them.
We arrived at the parking area. They were two cars there. One was a Mini Cooper. It seemed like a high-end model with all the extra fittings. Definitely not a cheap car. The other was a Maruti Swift. It seemed old, around 10 years old. It seriously needed some maintenance work done.
“Any information who they belong to?”
“The Swift belongs to one Jacob Matthew. He is an orphan. He just finished medical school. He was one of the top rankers in the All India Medical examination couple of years ago and is well known in the town.”
“And the Mini Cooper?”
“The Mini Cooper belongs to Priya Verma. She also went to the same medical school as Jacob. So we assume they knew each other very well.”
I could see from the constable’s expression that he wanted to add something more. But he was finding it difficult to decide whether to say it or not.
“And? What else?”
“Sir, she is the daughter of retired High Court Justice Verma.”
Shit. Just when I thought this case couldn’t get more troublesome. Justice Verma was a High Court Judge who retired a couple of years ago. He is a very well-known, respected figure and also very close to the Commissioner of Police. He also hails from a very well-to-do family. This was getting bad. I was getting far more than I bargained for.
At least that explained the Polo. The car was something that her family could easily afford. Probably a graduation gift.
“Thanks, Rajesh. Are we all good here, or anything you want to say before I leave now?
“No, Sir. Thats all. I’ll keep a lookout at the place to see if there is anything we missed in our initial search.”
“Good. Keep me posted if you find anything. Oh, one last thing, do you know who’s the Doctor that is looking into the case?”
“I believe it's Isaac Doctor."
“Also, who is at the hospital?”
“Constable Ajay is at the hospital.”
“Ok. Make sure no one leaks the news to the press.”
I made my way to the hospital. Things were getting much worse. I just hoped I would have better luck at the hospital.
