The Doctor came back soon with a policeman with him.
From his uniform and his age, it was clear that this was a senior police officer. At least an Inspector. I wonder if I’m supposed to know him.
Both of them discussed for a while outside the room before entering. The police officer starts by introducing himself.
“Hi, my name is Michael, and I’m the regional Inspector of Police. The Doctor tells me you don’t remember anything due to the injury on your head. Is that correct?”
“Unfortunately, that is correct. I can’t even remember my name.”
There was clear disappointmet on his face. But still he continued.
“I’m sorry to hear that. Let me tell you everything we know."
"Your name is Jacob. You are an orphan and grew up in an orphanage. You are a very brilliant student. You got a state rank in the Medical exam and got admitted for a medical course on merit. You completed your course a year ago and finished your compulsory one-year practice a couple of days ago.“
I appreciated everything the Inspector told me. But I still felt like he was avoiding something significant, and I decided to be frank with him.
“Thanks for all that information. But could you please tell me how I got here and what everyone is trying to avoid telling me?”
He was clearly conflicted on whether to share more details with me. But he soon arrived at a decision and started speaking again.
“Does the name Priya mean anything to you?”
“I feel like I have heard it somewhere, but I can’t recall.”
“How about this? This was found in your pocket at the time of your incident.”
He took out a beautiful ring with a blue-coloured gem on top of it. It looked very expensive.
Beautiful. I believe this would look wonderful on her. It would be a perfect match for her beautiful blue eyes. I can’t wait to give it to her.
I jolt back from my trance. The ring brought back some memories. I suddenly realize that everyone was waiting for my answer.
“I remember buying it for someone. But I can’t recall for whom or when I bought it.”
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
The Doctor seemed happy with the answer.
“It seems that your memory is not completely lost. It just requires the right stimulus to bring it back. The stimulus required can vary from memory to memory as well.”
The Inspector didn't seem too happy about the answer, though.
“Jacob, I’m sorry, but I have to convey some bad news. Yesterday morning you were discovered on top of the Lovers peak. It’s a small hill here. People are advised not to visit the place after 8 pm as the terrain is not too safe.”
“You were found on top of the hill. We are not sure how long you were there or when you came to the place. When you were discovered today morning, the Police was informed immediately. We came as soon as we got the report and shifted you to the Hospital. You had a knife wound on your back and a head injury from a fall. Luckily, the knife wound was not too deep, preventing huge blood loss, but the head injury seems to be more serious than we had initially thought.”
After a brief pause, he adds.
“You were not alone there. You were along with Priya, who was your college mate and friend. From what we know so far, you two were in a relationship and were planning to get married soon.”
I could see the expression on the Inspector's face before he spoke the following words. And I could already guess what he was going to say next.
“Unfortunately, she was not as lucky as you. She had received a knife wound to the heart. By the time we could provide her with any help, she had already passed away.”
“This is a small town, and this incident has caused a huge public outcry. There is a lot of pressure to figure out what happened.”
“From what we know and from the ring we found in your pocket, we assume that you asked Priya to come to the Lovers peak on the night of the incident. We believe you planned to propose to her that night. But someone interrupted both of you. He or she killed Priya and tried to kill you as well.
He continued speaking seeing that I had no plan to interrupt him. I was still digesting all new information that I had got.
“There was heavy rain yesterday morning. So we have not been successful in finding any evidence so far, but we want you to know we are trying everything we can to find who was behind this.”
I felt lost. I think I’m supposed to feel sad. But the fact that I couldn't even remember her made me feel worse.
I love her blue eyes and wish I could always keep looking into them. I can’t wait to propose to her on top of the Lovers peak. I know it has always been her dream.
I wake up from my trance again. I remember Priya now, at least her face. She seemed like the most beautiful woman I had ever seen, and the fact that I couldn't see her ever again saddened me to the core. But I still couldn't remember her entirely.
I suddenly realize everyone in the room was waiting for me to respond. The Inspector continued.
“I realize this must be a challenging time for you. But we were hoping you could give us some clues or any clues about the person who could have attacked you. It would help the case and also help us bring the culprit to justice.”
“I’m sorry, Inspector. I still can’t remember much. Only very few flashes of memory and that too nothing of that night. I will let you know as soon as I can remember anything. I need to rest at the moment. I’m feeling tired again.”
“It’s ok. Do take rest, and I’m truly sorry for your loss.”
The Inspector soon left, followed by the Doctor.
The room was empty again except for me. I tried my best to remember. But my memory fails me again.
I feel upset, more at the fact that I’m unable to even properly mourn the loss of my loved one.
I wish I could remember more. But maybe it was a blessing that my memories eluded me. I believe it will be very painful.
Before I realized I drift back to sleep again.
