3RD ADVENTURE - THE KIDNAPPING OF THE STORM GIANTS' DAUGHTER

"...and then BAM, I cut the evil priest down. Did I mention he tried to kill me with his Death Touch spell?", Donovan told the waitress, in an attempt to court her despite his meagre 10 points of Charisma.

"That's not how it happened, Donovan. We all know what killed him was Kharius's Lightning Bolt", Korvac corrected.

"Yeah, yeah, but I dealt a lot of damage too okay? I'm entitled to brag a little".

"You're lucky I was there, numbskull", Megalomagna interjected. "No other weapon would hurt that corpse handler as much as I did".

"Did your sword just talk?", the waitress asked, incredulous.

"I cast a spell on it, that's all", Kharius hastily explained, trying to outwit the girl.

"Maybe we should pay for the beer and leave", Bosco said, worried that Megalomagna would run its mouth again.

As the waitress collected the copper coins and went on, Megalomagna spoke again.

"So, I wasn't kidding, y'know", the sword said. "I feel like you guys should show more gratitude to me. Especially you, Donovan".

"What? But we are grateful! Last quest was your idea, right? We followed your lead, and we always appreciate your advice. What more could you ask?", Donovan asked, a little upset.

"I want to be pampered. I deserve it. You will encrust my hilt, pommel and scabbard with gems. Very precious ones. Nothing short of 20.000 gold pieces", the sword said.

"But that's 2/3 of the treasure we've found! We risked our lives inside that accursed tower, you know?", Bosco protested.

"I don't care, little hobbit. Do it or forget my powers. Better yet: I'll use them to make your lives a living hell! What do you say?", Megalomagna threatened.

The Party members scowled, exchanged glances, but ultimately surrendered to the sword's whims.

"All right", Donovan sighed. "Let's go see the jeweler".

"That's actually good timing of you", Kharius said. "I'm gonna need a week to study the Libram of Silver Magic we've found".

"Then we're set. Let's meet here in seven days. Dismissed!", Megalomagna said, flippant.

"You're not the Party Leader, sword!", Kharius yelled, as they went off in the distance.

***

Bosco was the first to arrive at the agreed time and location, but an odd scene caught his attention - and anything that startles a thief makes him hide as quickly as possible. A man with red hair and sumptuous clothing awaited in front of the Bard’s Tavern accompanied by two huge griffons. The mere sight of these fearsome hybrid monsters was enough to wreak havoc among the horses, their firm favorite food.

Hidden among stalls and lampposts, Bosco jumped at the sound of a voice right behind him.

“How are you, my fellow adventurer?", Kharius said, in an affable and lighthearted tone.

“Kharius? How did you find me here? You gave me quite a scare", Bosco said, recovering from the jumpscare.

“You do realize it’s broad daylight, right? Hiding in the shadows is much harder, especially from me, who knows you and your abilities”, Kharius reasoned.

“Oh, right. I guess you have a point", Bosco said, with an embarrassed smile. Straightening up, Bosco pointed to the strange visitors.

“Do you think they have anything to do with us?”, Kharius asked.

“Honestly, I hope not", Bosco said, frowning. “But ever since we found that sword, it seems like our lives have turned upside down, so I wouldn’t rule anything out".

Korvac and Donovan arrived practically together at the meeting point, and the red-haired man immediately approached them.

“Wait", Kharius told Bosco, who was already about to go to them.

“What’s wrong?”, Bosco asked eagerly. “Can’t you see those huge griffons? What if they attack our friends?”.

“Here, in front of everyone, that would never happen. Griffons are tough, but Donovan is much tougher. And everyone knows us around here. What caught my attention is that the man approached them without us being there", Kharius pondered.

“He probably wants to pay less for a mission. Come on, we have to make it clear to him that the payment will be for 4 adventurers, not 2", Bosco said and walked ahead.

Suspicious, Kharius furrowed his eyebrows and followed closely behind Bosco.

***

“As I was saying", said the red-haired man, noticing the rest of the party approaching, “the mission I bring was requested by someone special. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal who they are in public".

“We need at least some details to accept a request. Whom are you representing, what needs to be done, and, most importantly, who are you?”, Donovan said, crossing his arms.

“Fair enough", the red-haired man acquiesced and, without any explanations, opened his arms and began to levitate.

“Your last question is easier to answer", the man said. “But you’ll need to trust me enough to ride the griffons".

The party members exchanged glances. Donovan gave Megalomagna an inquisitive look.

“What you looking at?”, the sword asked. “Find me pretty? Well, I really am, even though I still think that jeweler was a second-rate scam artist".

“I find you the same as always: a chatterbox and a pain in the nuts. Now tell me what you see".

“I see a man and two griffons”, Megalomagna replied. “And a lot of magic".

“A lot of magic, huh…”, Donovan muttered to himself.

“I don’t have any more time", the red-haired man said, moving towards the sky. “Either you mount the griffons and come with me, or I’ll have to find others for this mission".

“Okay, but if we notice anything suspicious, the mission is over", Donovan made it clear, to which the man responded with a nod, and they mounted the surprisingly well-behaved griffons.

***

After taking flight and distancing themselves from the city’s buzz, the red-haired man slowed down his flight until coming to a full stop, turning to face the party.

“I think it’s safe here", he said, and his humanoid silhouette was surrounded by a golden light, reshaping into that of a horse with a horn on its forehead, covered in golden scales, a thick golden mane, and two ever-swaying whiskers on each side of its snout. Its shimmering scales gave it the appearance of being ablaze, its eyes turned deep violet, and its voice became strong and melodious.

“Is that a unicorn? Something tells me it isn’t”, Donovan told Kharius, pointing at the creature.

“I’m not a unicorn, human. But I do not take offense, be at ease. I am a ki-rin".

“Ki-rin…a legendary creature from the Upper Planes", Kharius said, more serious than usual. “The people who sent you must be very important indeed".

“They are Storm Giants, my dear half-elf, and they can’t wait to meet you. Too bad the situation is so dire", the ki-rin said.

The party members exchanged worried glances.

“Let’s leave the details for when we arrive", the ki-rin said, and gracefully resumed flight, promptly followed by the obedient griffons.

***

After about an hour of travel, the party spotted a mass of white clouds in the distance. The legendary ki-rin headed towards these clouds, leaving the adventurers intrigued. The reason, which left them in awe, soon became clear: there was an island seemingly floating amidst the clouds.

Getting closer, they could see a huge and majestic castle, the kind the adventurers never imagined they would see in this life or in the next.

“We’ve arrived", said the ki-rin, indicating that they would land. The island consisted of vast fields, gardens, and vineyards surrounding the gigantic stone castle in the center.

Entering the castle, the majestic ki-rin led the party through vast halls until they reached the main hall, where two huge figures, measuring about 8 meters in height, awaited them seated at a dining table, and rose to greet them.

“Welcome, noble adventurers”, said the obviously male figure, with a thunderous voice. “I am Ormund. This is my wife, Helgyr”. Both had light green skin and dark green hair and eyes. The male giant had a large beard of the same color, while the female was beautiful yet sturdy—a typical female warrior. Both wore fine white tunics and leather sandals.

“It wasn’t easy to convince them to come, Ormund. They are indeed experienced warriors”, said the ki-rin.

“Thank you, noble ki-rin. Your assistance has been invaluable in finding a party qualified enough to help us", said the giant with his resounding voice. Then, he turned towards the party.

“I won’t waste your time with pleasantries. Helgyr and I have a very young daughter, still unable to defend herself. Because of this, a band of Ettin Giants hidden in a village near Faerûn kidnapped her in a moment of distraction on our part and is now trying to extort an unpayable ransom to return her. We won’t tolerate this, but at the same time, we can’t invade their lair, which is too small for our passage. Demolishing the lair is also out of the question, as it could threaten our daughter’s life".

Emotionally moved, the giant took a breath before continuing.

“Therefore, we need a group of reliable and experienced adventurers to deal with these abominable creatures and bring our daughter back. Needless to say, you will be generously rewarded upon completing this difficult mission".

“Ettin Giants… are they those ugly monsters with two heads?”, Bosco asked.

“That’s them”, Korvac replied. “It’s very common to see them accompanied by orcs and ogres".

"They are strong and dangerous creatures, despite being not very intelligent”, Kharius added.

“Exactly. For this reason, this magnanimous ki-rin will guide you there, ensuring you arrive safely".

“My pleasure, Ormund. I’m curious to see how these humans, known for eliminating the infamous High Priest Ryngoth, will handle this mission", said the ki-rin.

“Very well. Godspeed to you, adventurers. I trust my daughter’s life and wellbeing with you", the storm giant said and retired to his chambers, accompanied by his wife.

Taking flight again, the Party beheld the majestic ki-rin inexplicably soaring through the air like a golden wingless horse.

“Something has been bugging me”, Megalomagna broke the silence, thinking aloud. “Why would a ki-rin be so interested in the affairs of storm giants? They are big and shoot lightning from their hands, but there’s nothing Celestial about them".

“Megalomagna!”, Donovan admonished.

“I see you have a curious artifact there”, the ki-rin said without looking back. “There’s no reason to scold it for asking a pertinent question. The truth is, if you complete the mission, I will also be rewarded. What’s so wrong with liking treasures?”, the creature said, smirking.

Before anyone could say anything, a massive stone projectile passed by them.

“A war weapon?”, Kharius asked, astonished. “That looked like a bolt launched by a ballista”.

Another massive bolt passed a few meters from one of the griffons, which only remained calm due to the presence of the ki-rin.

“They are orcs”, said the ki-rin. “More precisely, they are orogs. Abominable mongrels born from the mix of orcs and ogres".

“We have to land before one of those bolts hits us!”, Donovan shouted. “Mr. Ki-rin, please give the griffons the order!”.

“As you wish”, said the creature, and a mere glance was enough for the griffons to understand the command. However, worried about the landing, the Party members failed to notice that a catapult was armed and waiting for the opportunity to launch a massive stone onto them, hitting them squarely and causing 2d10 damage.

"Steady, everyone!", Donovan rallied. The Party quickly gathered around him, but the griffons, having little morale, made a run for it without a second thought. The ki-rin gave it little importance, instead keeping its attention centered around the creatures operating the war machines.

Reestablishing formation, the Party realized that six creatures resembling large orcs were approaching.

“So are these ugly monsters the orogs?”, Bosco asked. “Putting them down will be a favor we do to them".

“They are well-armed. Get ready for a fight!”, Donovan shouted with Megalomagna in hand and rushed towards the monsters.

"I expected you to join the fray, Mr. Ki-rin", Donovan said, cleaning the blood from Megalomagna's blade.

"Was it really necessary? From my point of view, you blazed through them like hot knife through butter", the ki-rin replied.

"Guys", Bosco said. "You do realize there's a whole bunch of orcs looking at us, right?".

"They're probably common orcs from the village. I'd say there's at least 50 of them. It's gonna be trouble if they decide to avenge their chief", Kharius pondered.

"They have no intention to fight. Their elder is coming our way", said the ki-rin, as an old orc, probably a shaman, came riding a big wolf.

"Human. We. Want. Not. Fight", said the old orc, in poor common language.

"Then why did your strongest receive us with bolts and stones?", Donovan argued.

"You. Strong. Him. Dangerous", the orc said, pointing at the ki-rin.

Kharius raised his eyebrows at the old orc's statement.

"If you don't want to fight, we will let you live, as long as you tell us where the storm giants' daughter is".

"Me. Know. Little. See. No. Storm. Giant", the orc said.

"At least tell us where the Ettin Giants' lair is", Korvac interjected.

"Ettin? Cave. There", the orc said, pointing towards a large mountain to the north.

"Okay, that should be good enough for starters. Farewell, old orc. Let's be lucky as to not meet again", Donovan said and walked away, not waiting for an answer. He missed the old shaman scowling and muttering something to himself.

***

"You are quite merciful", the ki-rin said to the Party. "I've seen humans less powerful than you who would decimate that orc village for the chance of some loot or prize".

"Leave them be. We have killed the ones who were a threat, so there's no need for unnecessary bloodshed", Donovan said.

"Well said, Donovan", Korvac said. "I'm proud of you".

"That much chivalry can cause even a sword to throw up, you dolts", Megalomagna said. "Focus on the mission, will ya?".

Donovan sighed at Megalomagna's words but said nothing. As they approached the large mountain, they saw a large cave and a giant creature at its entrance. It was about 4 meters tall and had two ugly heads. Although standing, it appeared to be asleep, with each head falling towards its respective shoulder.

"Maybe I can backstab him if I can get close enough without waking him up", Bosco said.

"That's too dangerous, Bosco", Kharius said. "That creature has two heads: that's twice the chance of noticing you".

"Just heal me and it will be fine", Bosco said without looking back, and everyone turned to Korvac.

"There's no need to spend your priest's spells for such a simple task; here, allow me", said the ki-rin, and its horn emitted a golden glow that effectively healed the entire Party.

"Wow, thanks Mr. Ki-rin!", Bosco said, to which the creature nodded.

"All right, here goes nothing", Bosco said and went towards the giant, trying to stay clear of the two heads field of vision while silently approaching it, sword in hand.

"That was VERY reckless, Bosco", Donovan scolded.

"Yes, but it worked! I dealt a heavy blow on that thing. Who needs Megalonomad when you're this skilled?", Bosco retorted.

"IT'S MEGALOMAGNA, FOR FUCK'S SAKE!", the sword snapped.

"No swearing around me", Korvac said. "Keep your dirty words to yourself".

"Hmpf. My name's not even that hard to learn, you fools. Dollyvan Snide. Kognac the Stressed. Kharlos Bornfool. Mosco Smellyfeet".

"Stop fooling around. This monster was very strong and it's likely there's more of these inside the cave. We need to focus", Donovan reprimanded.

"Your leader is correct", said the ki-rin. “There are other giants in there, some even stronger than this one".

"You're not the only one who can detect life forms, horned horse!", Megalomagna yelled. The ki-rin raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

"Show some respect, Meggie", Donovan said, purposefully mistaking the sword's name.

"You damn musclehead...", it muttered.

Entering the cave, the first thing the Party could notice was the horrendous stench filling the stale air. Alongside the smell of carrion, what disgusted the Party members even more was the amount of carcasses, offal, and animal feces. If the mission weren’t so crucial, there would be a high chance that the adventurers might give up on it.

“I hope this little giant is pretty, and that the reward for rescuing her is even prettier!”, Bosco vented, sidestepping feces and rotten flesh as he walked.

“Very kind and important beings have requested this mission from us”, Korvac said. “They expect us to have the necessary resolution to face even the most hostile environments".

"Silence", Megalomagna interjected. "There's a life form very close to us".

"Where?", Donovan asked, looking around. "I see nothing".

"Watch out, Donovan!", Kharius shouted, as two ridged tentacles launched towards him.

***

"Holy moly, that was disgusting!", Bosco exclaimed.

"An abominable creature indeed", Kharius added.

"And sneaky, too", Donovan said. "If Megalomagna hadn't warned me, I could have been grabbed by both of those tentacles and that would've been bad news".

"I'm just glad we killed it before it could bite us", Korvac vented.

"Let's continue", the ki-rin asked. "The storm giants' daughter might be in danger".

"Look at that stupid horse, taking charge...", Megalomagna grumbled. Donovan gave it a disapproving side glance.

Walking through the ettins' lair, the Party moved carefully when suddenly a sharp pendulum passed inches from Donovan’s nose.

"Where did that come from?", he asked, perplexed.

Another pendulum crossed the corridor, almost hitting Bosco.

"Everyone duck!", Korvac shouted. Kharius remained impassive.

A third pendulum launched towards Kharius.

"Get out of there, Kharius!", Bosco shouted.

"No need. It’s just an illusion. Isn’t it obvious to you?".

The pendulum passed through Kharius’ body without leaving a scratch.

"You guys are just too gullible. Just look at the ceiling, and you’ll see there was nowhere for those pendulums to hang from", Kharius explained.

Continuing their walk, the party began to sweat due to an intense heat, and observed a light source ahead. Approaching the light, the heat became almost unbearable.

"Is this a river of lava?", Bosco asked.

"If this is also an illusion, it must be a very advanced one because this heat feels very real to me", Donovan pondered.

"It is an illusion. If there were real lava in this cave, we would have felt the heat from the moment we entered it", Kharius reasoned, casually putting his hand in the lava, to the dismay of his companions. The concern proved unnecessary, as the half-elf withdrew his hand from the lava intact and without any burns.

"Your intelligence is truly exceptional, Master Kharius", said the ki-rin.

"It’s nothing", Kharius replied, stern. "What intrigues me is the number of programmed illusions in this cav…".

Before Kharius could complete his sentence, an immense fireball flew toward the party.

"It was", Kharius replied, putting out little fires on his clothes. "It seems the illusions were just a diversion for the real trap".

"Uuhh, Mr. Ki-rin...", Bosco mumbled, but was interrupted by the creature.

"I'm sorry, I can't use any more healing for the day".

"I smell humans", a coarse voice could be heard from the depths of the cave.

"And I smell hobbits", a slightly higher pitched voice replied.

"No, it's humans. No hobbits. Humans smell stronger", said the coarse voice again, irritated.

"Hobbits smell stronger, I'm sure", said the thinner voice.

"You know nothing, shitface! It's humans, end of story!", the coarse voice yelled, to what the other voice responded with nothing but a low mumble.

Heavy steps were heard until a huge silhouette, even taller than the ettin giant they faced before, became apparent. What left the Party dumbfounded was that this creature, although similar to an ettin giant in stature and bad smell, had only one eye on each of its heads.

"Is that a two-headed cyclops?", Korvac asked, perplexed.

"Or maybe the bizarre result of a crossbreed between a cyclops and an ettin giant", Kharius added.

With a disgusted face, Donovan unsheathed Megalomagna. "Save the monster biology class for another time, will ya? That thing must be destroyed".

The biclops finally noticed the Party, and the reason one voice was higher pitched than the other became clear. The giant was lopsided, the right side being slightly more muscular and well-developed than the left. It pointed to the Party and the right head said: "See? Humans!".

"There's a hobbit too...", the left head said in a low voice, and the giant charged towards them with a giant club in each hand.

The Ettin Leader, battered and bruised, staggered but refused to fall, instead groping around until it found a wall to lean on. Leaning its back against the wall, the ettin giant sighed heavily and descended to the floor, leaving a dark-red bloodstain in its wake.

Donovan approached it, frowning. The stern look in his face wasn't enough to intimidate the wounded giant.

"Tell me where the girl is", Donovan said in common language.

"We know nothing", the giant's right head said. "And wouldn't tell if we did", the left head added.

"Kharius, check the rest of the cave. This guy is lying, I know it", Donovan commanded. Kharius investigated and promptly returned, shaking his head.

"The girl is not there", the half-elf said. "There's only one chamber there, with a few chests, junk and garbage".

"Last chance. Tell us and we'll let you live", Donovan said.

"We no bargain with cowards", the giant said, spitting on the floor, to Donovan's chagrin.

"Let me handle this", Megalomagna interjected.

"What are you gonna do?", Donovan asked.

"Just wait and see", Megalomagna retorted and its blade glowed purple.

----------------------------------------

Megalomagna has cast the spell Emotion (hopelessness).

----------------------------------------

The expression on the giant's face suddenly changed.

"No! No kill us! Us tell you. Ildjotunen planned all. Kidnap storm giant girl. Ransom good. Payment good".

Donovan was astounded at Megalomagna's spell, but he couldn't let the chance slip between his fingers, so he saved any questions he had for the sword for later.

"Where is the girl?", the sword asked.

"Volcano. Ildjotunen's lair. East", the giant said.

"Ildjotunen...what is it, any of you guys know?", Donovan asked the Party.

"Fire giant", Kharius answered. "That's how they call themselves in their language".

"Is the fire giant alone?", Megalomagna asked.

"Yes! He alone! Now please spare us! No kill us!", the giant begged, nearly crying.

"Too late. You're already dead", Megalomagna declared, and its blade glowed purple again.

----------------------------------------

Megalomagna has cast the spell Emotion (terror). The Ettin Giant Leader's eyes widened, and its face contorted in sheer terror. It gave one last breath before collapsing, never to breathe again.

"I have many questions for you, sword", Donovan said.

"I have a name", Megalomagna retorted, defiant.

"We do not condone your methods", Korvac said. "That was unnecessarily cruel".

"You maul that thing down, bombard it with spells and I'm cruel?", Megalomagna replied.

"Since when can you cast the Emotion spell?", Kharius asked, inquisitive.

"I learned it, okay? Don't you learn new spells all the time? Cut me some slack", Megalomagna snapped.

"You...learned it? A new spell?", Kharius asked, more to himself than to the sword.

The Party failed to notice how the ki-rin's eyes widened up in surprise and a smirk formed in its lips.

"Let's talk about it later", Donovan said. "We need to get to that volcano east of here as soon as we can".

***

Entering the base of the volcano, the Party immediately noticed it was an entirely different place compared to the ettins' cave. This was the den of something really powerful, and the almost unbearable heat made sure that no scavengers or undesired visitors would dare intrude.

"Listen", Donovan said to the Party. "A fire giant is no joke. This is gonna be our hardest fight yet. Prepare for the worst, okay?".

Everyone nodded.

"Then let's heal and go after that pesky giant!", he added.

"Maybe we should take a rest, just to recover a bit more", Bosco said.

"There's no time", said the ki-rin. "I'm sorry, adventurers, but Ormund's daughter might be in danger. We cannot afford to rest until she is safe".

"Besides", Donovan added, "l don't think we would be able to rest in this heat".

Defeated and resentful, Bosco followed the Party while keeping some distance. As they went on, the cave opened into a large hall with and elevation where a very tall yet squat man, resembling more of a huge dwarf, with a massive boulder under his arm, stood proudly.

"It seems that stupid Ettin spilled the beans and ruined our agreement. I hope he's dead or I'll make him wish he was", the giant said.

"He is dead", Donovan said. "Now hand us the girl".

"The girl? Me, handing her over? Hahahaha", the fire giant laughed out loud. "She is a good source of gold, and you're just a bunch of ants. Let me show you how insignificant you are next to me".

The fire giant held the boulder with its two massive hands and threw it onto the Party.

"Can you handle him in melee? Look at the size of that monster!", the sword replied.

"I have to. If I lose here, the giant's gonna add you to his treasure. Can't accept that", Donovan said with a smirk.

Megalomagna was satisfied with his owner's answer. Its blade glowed purple, as it usually does when casting a spell.

"You do have a stronger spell, noble priest", the ki-rin told Korvac.

With a thunderous roar, he stumbled, his 5.5 meters tall frame swaying precariously. "Well done, adventurers. The storm giants will be overjoyed to know their daughter is safe and sound", the ki-rin said.

"Is that a golden unicorn?", the giant girl asked.

"It's a ki-rin, a benevolent creature from the Upper Planes", Korvac whispered in her ear. "We don't know its name because...we wouldn't dare to ask".

She looked at the creature with inquisitive eyes, but quickly snapped out of it due to the extreme heat.

"Please take me home. I can't stand this heat anymore", she said.

As the Party left the volcano's cave, Kharius interrupted their march.

"Listen, I think we should examine the items we've found before going anywhere", the half-elf said.

"I understand your intentions, Master Kharius, but this girl's parents are eager to see her. Is it fair to keep them waiting?", said the ki-rin.

"She is fine, so I guess they can wait a little longer. Korvac, cast a Detect Evil spell", Kharius insisted.

Kharius noticed the ki-rin's demeanor changed.

"Is it really necessary, Kharius?", Korvac asked, confused.

"Yes it is. Those items could be cursed. Don't you remember what the old wizard told us?", Kharius retorted.

"Fine, fine! I'll do it", Korvac said, holding his holy symbol.

Kharius noticed the ki-rin snarled a little.

----------------------------------------

Korvac casts Detect Evil.

----------------------------------------

"I can see this bag generates an evil aura. Don't put your hands inside it, it could be dangerous! The ring is clear, the wand, the shield...".

Suddenly, Korvac took a defensive stance, heavy mace in hand.

"Who are you? Identify yourself!", Korvac demanded the ki-rin, startling the unsuspecting Bosco and Donovan.

With a wild growl that a real ki-rin would never let out, the creature started to change shape until it assumed the form of an enormous red dragon, more than 20 meters long.

"I should just burn you all down like some human barbecue, but that's gonna have to wait until another time", it said with a guttural, frightening voice.

"A red dragon?", Donovan shouted, perplexed.

"We have been roaming around with a red dragon in disguise?", Bosco asked, dumbfounded.

"Giants are either too stupid or too naive. And so are you humans. But I see I underestimated that half-elf's intelligence. Curse you and your kind!", the red dragon said with its fearsome voice.

"I knew something was wrong. You're not as smart as you think, dragon", Kharius challenged.

"Well, no matter. I'm satisfied with the results I've got. Soon we'll meet again, by which time I'll add that marvelous sword to my treasure. Farewell, vermin!", the dragon declared.

Flapping its enormous wings, the red dragon reached the skies in a second. But before leaving, it turned to the Party again.

"You said you wouldn't dare ask my name. Very well, let me tell you so you can fear it: I'm Ruin, the red flame!", the dragon shouted, let out a laugh and flew away.

"Great, now how do we leave this place?", Bosco asked, helpless.

***

"I'm glad you are able to summon griffons, giant little lady", Donovan said.

"You can call me by my name", the storm giant's daughter said. "I'm Mey".

"And we are lucky that dragon chose to leave instead of fighting. We were in bad shape after fighting the fire giant", Bosco said.

"Red dragons are greedy and covetous even by dragon standards", Kharius pondered. "It won't risk damaging treasure it wants to keep for itself. And it saw us fighting, so it probably knew it wouldn't be able to kill us without his fire breath".

"Does it mean a red dragon breath is hot enough to melt even a magic sword like Megalomagna?", Donovan asked.

"Of course not, what am I to you, a piece of iron?", Megalomagna yelled, upset. "Don't underestimate the power of my magic", it said pompously.

"Wow, a talking sword!", Mey exclaimed.

"I'm not gonna respond to that", Megalomagna said, annoyed.

***

"Thank you, adventurers, for saving our daughter. I'm utterly ashamed and disappointed with myself for failing to see through the red dragon's façade", Ormund said, refusing to lift his gaze.

"We are inclined to believe this red dragon wanted the fire giant's lair for itself", Helgyr reasoned.

"But it didn't want to fight the fire giant one on one, since fire giants are strong and resistant to fire", Ormund added.

"So it was much more convenient for the dragon to find a party that could get rid of him without dirtying its hands", Kharius reasoned.

"It probably surmised the fire giant was young and arrogant, and for that reason it took advantage of the kidnapping to further its own cause", Helgyr pondered.

"I understand you were the first to see through the deception, Sir Kharius", Ormund said.

"I don't find unusual for a ki-rin to help storm giants, but that creature's behavior became more suspicious the further we went with the mission", Kharius said. "Its growing interest on Megalomagna is what gave it away".

"Megalomagna...", Ormund muttered to himself, with a hand on his chin, unintentionally ignoring what Bosco said. Helgyr cleared her throat, causing him to snap out of his daydreaming.

"Yes, yes, we must thank you properly. First of all, let me declare that this family is in your debt. If at any time you need help, you can call us personally and we will come to your aid".

"Next, allow us to present you with these gifts. They are a star emerald we have been keeping for a while - it's probably quite valuable; a short bow +1, +3 against evil creatures, perfect for Kharius; and about the last one... we would like you to wield it against that wicked red dragon: a dragon slayer sword +4".

"That won't do", Megalomagna interjected.

"What was that voice?", Ormund asked, troubled.

"Don't mind it", Donovan said. "This sword has been imbued with the soul of a parrot".

"You can act funny all you want, Donovan, but I won't allow you to wield another sword", Megalomagna said.

"Allow me? Are you trying to decide what weapons I can use or not?", Donovan retorted, outraged.

"I decide that from the moment you took me out of that barrel", Megalomagna declared. "Admit it, without me, you would be dead already".

"How self-entitled, egocentric, narcissistic and self-absorbed can you be?", Donovan said, incredulous.

"Are you by any chance arguing with your own sword, Sir Donovan?", Ormund asked, smiling.

"Please don't mind it, Master Ormund", Donovan said, embarrassed. "It has quite a temper".

"I think you are a good pair", Ormund replied. "I've changed my mind. You don't need a dragon slayer if you have that sword by your side. There is something else we can give you instead. Mey, bring me the armor".

The storm giant daughter's eyes widened.

"I have decided to give it to them", Ormund stated. "Go on, quickly".

After a few moments, the young girl came back, holding a marvelous piece of armor in her hands.

"A long time ago, a gold dragon gave us his cast-off scales as a gift for a guarding agreement we had. With the help of master dwarven smith Fyrfar Smokebeard, we forged this scale mail. It provides great protection, including against the raging fires of a red dragon's breath! It should definitely aid you when the time to fight the beast comes", Ormund said.

"This is too much, Master Ormund. We don't deserve a relic of this level", Donovan said, marveled at the armor's beauty.

"Of course you do. You saved my daughter, remember? I hope it helps you and keeps you protected".

"Well...thank you, Masters Ormund, Helgyr and Mey", Donovan said on behalf of the Party. "We will always treasure your friendship", he said as they bowed and left.

***

"Welcome, my friends! You look strong! Wearing dragon scale armor? Guess I should kill you all before you become too dangerous, huh?", the wizard said, with bloodshot eyes.

"The old man's strange. What happened to him? Even his hair looks more disheveled than usual", Korvac said.

"I have a bad feeling about this", Kharius replied.

"Old man, we want you to identify these items we have found", Donovan said, cutting to the chase.

"Oohh what marvelous items you've got there! A ring of fire resistance, a wand of fire, were you fighting fire-laden creatures? A bag of devouring, this could eat ya whole, ya know? Pesky little bag! Wow, a magical shield +2! This is quite a treasure! And this last one is the best: a flask of curses! It can do so many things, I just can't help myself!".

The old man opened the flask. A red vapor leaked from the flask, filling the wizard's shop with a smell of bronze and basalt, until the vapor took the form of a bulky and demonic-featured genie.

"An efreeti! Run for your lives!", the old wizard screamed and teleported away from the shop, leaving the genie, mad with rage, staring at the Party as if ready to burn the place down.

"If you guys don't kill that wicked wizard, I swear I will!", Megalomagna roared.
