"This dungeon sucks!", Donovan said. "Check out this smell! It feels like an undead rat ate another undead rat and had a diarrhea".

"You accepted the quest, Donovan. For some reason you were appointed leader of this party, so it's on you", Kharius said.

"Stop arguing", Korvac said. "This is a goblin’s den, and they have great hearing".

"Precisely", Bosco said. "How am I supposed to survive if I can't even hide in the shadows?".

"Fine, fine", Donovan said. "Well anyway, it looks like we won't need to worry about that for now, since goblins just showed up!".

----------------------------------------

* 2d4 goblins appeared!

* Rolling 2d4 = 5

* The Party will be facing 5 goblins in this encounter.

* The Party rolls a 7 for initiative (1d10), while the goblins roll a 3.

* The Party will attack first in this battle.

Rolling a 1d10 for the Adventurers Party's initiative:

* Donovan Stride: 9

* Kharius Bloodmoon: 8

* Korvac the Blessed: 5

* Bosco Tumblefoot: 1+2=3

----------------------------------------

Donovan Stride attacks a goblin with his longsword. He has a THAC0 of 18-2 (due to his Strength bonus), and the common goblins have AC:10, so he needs to roll a 6 or higher to hit. He rolls a 14 and successfully hits the goblin. His longsword deals 1d10+2 damage. Rolling for damage: 7 + 2 = 9 damage. The goblin releases a shrill scream and dies agonizing.

Kharius Bloodmoon casts a Magic Missile spell, targeting another goblin. The spell automatically hits and deals 1d4 damage. Rolling for damage: 3 damage. The goblin's head explodes from the magical attack and its remains fall to the ground, motionless.

Korvac the Blessed attacks a goblin with his morning star. He has a THAC0 of 19, so he needs to roll a 9 or higher to hit. He rolls a 16 and successfully hits the goblin. His morning star deals 1d8 damage. Rolling for damage: 6 damage. The goblin’s throat is crushed by the blunt weapon and it is sent tumbling to his death.

Bosco Tumblefoot attacks another goblin with his short sword. He has a THAC0 of 19-3 (due to his Dexterity bonus), so he needs to roll a 6 or higher to hit. He rolls an 18 and successfully hits the goblin. His short sword deals 1d6 damage. Rolling for damage: 4 damage. The goblin’s chest is pierced and it falls to his knees, losing consciousness until it’s dead.

The remaining goblin attempts to attack Donovan Stride. The goblin has a THAC0 of 20, and Donovan has AC: 4, so it needs to roll a 16 or higher to hit. The goblin rolls a 15 and misses.

Donovan attacks the last remaining goblin with his longsword. He needs to roll a 6 or higher to hit. He rolls a 19 and successfully hits the goblin. His longsword deals 1d10+2 damage. Rolling for damage: 6 + 2 = 8 damage. The goblin’s head is cut off and falls to the ground, eyes wide open in terror.

"What a ridiculous amount of junk", Donovan said. "Ten silvers don't even cover the trouble of dealing with this mess".

"If you don't want it, you can give me the silvers”, Bosco said. "You wouldn't know what to do with it anyway".

"Enough of this discussion", Korvac reprimanded. "Everything we find on this mission will be divided equally; it's the only way to prevent greed from corrupting us".

"As always, the wise lord", Bosco said, with irony. "Let's move on; the stupid wizard's wedding ring won't find itself", the hobbit thief said, attempting to take charge.

"Wait", Kharius halted suddenly. The half-elf was so quiet and discreet that the group had almost forgotten he was there.

"What is it?", Donovan asked, hand on his sword hilt.

"Aren't you guys listening?", Kharius asked, cupping his hand behind his ear. "It sounds like a voice... singing".

The voice sang loudly: "LALALALALAAAA, WHO'S THERE LALALALALAAAA, I'M TIRED OF SINGING LALALALALAAAA, WHAT AN UGLY WIMPY THAT I SEE LALALALALAAAA...".

"Indeed, it sounds like a human voice singing", Korvac mused. "A rather foolish song, I must say".

"I'll hide in the shadows", Bosco said, quickly sneaking around the dungeon corners. Since there were no enemies around, his attempt was successful. "I'll go ahead; move slowly and make as little noise as possible, okay?", Bosco whispered to the group before disappearing from their view.

Bosco moved towards the voice, carefully treading between dead animals and leftover food as he traversed a damp and dark corridor. Ahead, he saw the light of a torch and soon realized that a goblin was holding it while examining something in the room. The thief approached slowly but didn't dare to attack before knowing how many goblins were there. The voice sang again: "ANOTHER UGLY WIMPY HAS ARRIVED, HAIRY FOOT AND SHORTY... COME OUT, LITTLE THIEF, CUZ I CAN SEE YOU".

Bosco jumped in surprise when he realized he had been discovered, and the goblins looked in his direction. He finally noticed that the goblin he saw wasn't alone.

----------------------------------------

* 1d6 common goblins appeared! Rolling 1d6 = 3.

* 1d4 assistant goblins appeared! Rolling 1d4 = 2.

* The Party will be facing 3 common goblins and 2 assistant goblins in this encounter.

* The Party will have a -4 penalty on their initiative due to the mysterious voice giving away Bosco’s presence.

* The Party rolls a 3 (-4) for initiative (1d10), while the goblins roll an 8.

* The goblins will attack first in this battle.

----------------------------------------

The three common goblins, unable to spot the entire Adventurers Party, focus their slingshot attacks on Bosco, who is the most visible in the dim light.

The first goblin takes aim and slings a projectile toward Bosco. The goblin needs to roll a 20 to hit. Rolling a 16, the slingstone narrowly misses Bosco.

The second goblin targets Bosco as well. Rolling a 19, the slingstone connects, dealing 1d4 damage. Rolling a 3, Bosco takes 3 damage, bringing his HP down to 5. His head hurts from the stone thrown at him.

The third goblin, encouraged by the near hit of its comrade, slings another projectile at Bosco. Rolling a 20, the slingstone hits Bosco’s nose, causing it to bleed, dealing 1d4 damage. Rolling a 2, Bosco takes 2 more damage, reducing his HP to 3.

The common goblins, satisfied with their initial attacks, cackle in goblinoid laughter, thinking they have the upper hand. The poorly lit chambers echo with the sounds of the ongoing battle. The Adventurers Party now prepares to retaliate.

Bosco, recognizing the threat posed by the close-by goblin assistants, takes the first action. He lunges towards the nearest goblin assistant with his short sword. He has a THAC0 of 16 and the goblin assistance has AC:8, so he needs to roll an 8 or higher to hit. Rolling a 14, Bosco successfully hits the goblin assistant, dealing 1d6 damage. Rolling for damage: 5. Bosco slices the assistant goblin’s throat and it suffocates on its own blood and dies.

Donovan, understanding the strategic importance of eliminating the stronger goblin assistants, follows Bosco's lead and attacks the second goblin assistant. Rolling a 17, Donovan successfully hits the goblin assistant with his longsword. With his strength modifier, the damage is 1d10+2. Rolling a 6, Donovan deals 8 damage, eliminating the second goblin assistant with a precise slash that cuts the goblin’s head in half.

Kharius, seeing the success of his comrades and wanting to contribute at a distance, decides to target one of the common goblins with his bow and arrow. Kharius has a THAC0 of 17, so he needs a 7 to hit. Rolling a 13, Kharius successfully hits a common goblin with a wooden arrow. Rolling a 4 on a 1d6, the half-elf wizard deals 4 damage. The arrow pierces one of the goblin’s lungs and it uselessly gasps for air, falling to the ground grotesquely, dead.

Korvac the Blessed, recognizing the need to support Bosco, casts Cure Light Wounds on him. Rolling a 6 on a 1d8 for the Cure Light Wounds spell, Bosco’s total HP return to its max at 8.

With the goblin assistants and one common goblin defeated, the Adventurers Party turns its attention to the remaining common goblins, who, still at a distance, watch nervously as the tide of battle turns against them.

Now it's the 2 remaining common goblins turn. They must roll for morale first now that their superiors have died. Their morale is 10. 1d20 will decide if they still have morale in order to keep fighting. If they fail, they will run to the corners of the room and stay crouched, cowering in fear.

----------------------------------------

* Rolling a 1d20 for the common goblins' morale:

* Rolled a 15.

----------------------------------------

The goblins, despite losing their superiors, manage to maintain their morale. They steel themselves, ready to face the adventurers and continue the battle. The dimly lit room echoes with the sounds of their determination as they prepare to retaliate.

The first common goblin, aiming for Donovan, swings its rusty short sword. It has THAC0 20, and Donovan has AC: 4, so the goblin needs a 16 to hit. Rolling a 19, the goblin successfully hits Donovan. Damage roll (1d4): 3. The goblin inflicts 3 damage on Donovan, bringing his HP down to 18.

The second goblin targets Bosco. Rolling a 16, the goblin successfully hits Bosco. Dealing 1d4 damage, the goblin inflicts 2 damage on Bosco, reducing his HP to 6.

The third goblin attacks Kharius Bloodmoon. Rolling a 18, the goblin successfully hits Kharius. Dealing 1d4 damage, the goblin inflicts 4 damage on Kharius, leaving him with 0 HP.

Kharius falls to the ground, unconscious, as the two goblins press their advantage in melee combat.

----------------------------------------

Rolling a 1d10 for the Adventurers Party's initiative:

* Bosco Tumblefoot: 9+2=11

* Donovan Stride: 6

* Korvac the Blessed: 3

* Kharius Bloodmoon: Unconscious

----------------------------------------

Bosco, determined to eliminate the goblin threat, takes the first action. He retaliates against the goblin that wounded him. Rolling a 15, Bosco successfully hits the goblin with his short sword. Dealing 1d6 damage, Bosco rolls a 3, eliminating the goblin with a swift thrust to the eye that causes the goblin to stumble in pain until he dies of shock.

Donovan, enraged at witnessing Kharius being knocked unconscious, charges at the second goblin. Rolling a 12, Donovan successfully hits the goblin with his longsword. Dealing 1d10+2 damage, Donovan rolls 7+2=9, eliminating the second goblin with a merciless slash to its torso.

Korvac, seeing Kharius in dire need of healing, casts Cure Light Wounds on him. Rolling a 7 for the Cure Light Wounds spell, Kharius’s HP is brought back to its max at 4.

----------------------------------------

* A set of crudely crafted leather armor worn by the goblins for minimal protection.

* Small pouches containing a total of 45 silver.

* Necklaces made from the teeth of various creatures, worn as primitive adornments.

* A journal written in crude goblin language. It’s torn and unreadable.

The Party picks up the 45 silver and leaves the rest.

“WOOOOOOOWW. What a battle, goddamn. I would have clapped my hands if I had any”, the mysterious voice said.

“That voice again”, Donovan said. “Where is it coming from? The goblins are dead and I can’t see anyone besides us. Is he invisible or something?”.

"You wouldn't guess even if it took you a century", the voice declared, laughing. "This is your first adventure, isn't it? Even if you saw what I really am, you probably wouldn't believe it".

"Then reveal yourself for what you are", Kharius retorted, defiantly.

"Uhhhh...so, about that. I don’t think I can. Not while I'm inside this barrel. You're a wizard, right? Don't come close, or you'll regret it. I mean it".

"Barrel? Is there someone in that barrel?", Bosco asked, ignoring the voice’s remarks about wizards. Approaching with the torch, he noticed there was nothing but a sword inside.

"BOO", the voice uttered. Bosco was startled for a second by the jumpscare and was utterly confused. Looking at the rest of the Party, Bosco didn't know what to say.

"Come on, Bosco. What's in there?", Korvac asked.

"It's a sword", Bosco replied. "The sword talked".

"BINGO", the sword replied. "But I'm not just any sword. I am the best sword that has ever existed!", and let out a villainous laugh.

Donovan's eyes gleamed. "A talking sword! We hit the jackpot, guys. This item must be extremely rare!", and he proceeded to take the sword out of the barrel.

"Who gave you permission to touch me, human? Do you even know who I am?", the sword asked, arrogantly.

"Actually, no", Donovan replied. "But it doesn't matter. If you're powerful, you'll be useful. If not, we'll sell you for good cash".

"NO ONE SELLS MEGALOMAGNA!", the sword responded with a thunderous voice. The Party members were startled by the unexpected reaction of the weapon.

"Megalomagna", Kharius said. "That name spells bad omens".

"And you, wizard, spell what? You are the embodiment of bad omens! Get out of my sight, you damned spellcaster!", Megalomagna shouted.

"Enough of the shouting!", Korvac interjected. "For a sword, you're too noisy. We're in a damn dungeon full of goblins, and you still keep screaming? Are you trying to attract an army of them to come and kill us? Are you so powerful that you're not even afraid a goblin may use you as a rat chopper?".

"Goblins don't understand how powerful I am, cleric. But you're right about one thing: goblins are coming. Since I'm so magnanimous, I'll allow one of you to wield me in order to kill them easily. EXCEPT THE WIZARD!", Megalomagna declared, and hurried steps could be heard. It was indeed a bunch of goblins.

----------------------------------------

2d6 goblin assistants appeared! Rolling 2d6 = 7.

* The Party will be facing 7 goblin assistants in this encounter.

* Rolling 1d10 for initiative. The Party rolls a 6, while the goblin assistants roll a 3.

* The Party gains the initiative and will act first in this encounter.

Rolling 1d10 for the Adventurers Party's initiative:

* Kharius Bloodmoon: 8

* Bosco Tumblefoot: 6+2= 8

* Donovan Stride: 5

* Korvac the Blessed: 3

----------------------------------------

Kharius, seizing the initiative, casts Magic Missile at one of the goblin assistants in the back. The Magic Missile automatically hits, dealing 1d4+1 damage. Rolling a 3+1, the goblin assistant in the back takes 4 damage. His body is bombarded with the magic projectiles and drops dead, poked full of burning holes.

Bosco, quick on his feet, engages one of the goblin assistants in melee. He has a THAC0 of 15, so he needs to roll a 7 to hit. Rolling a 13, Bosco connects. Rolling for 1d6 damage: 4. The goblin assistant is pierced in the stomach by Bosco’s short sword and enjoys a slow and painful death.

Donovan, following Bosco's lead, charges at a goblin assistant with the intelligent sword Megalomagna. Rolling a 16, Donovan successfully hits. Dealing 1d8+5 damage, Donovan rolls a 6, inflicting 11 damage. The goblin assistant is chopped in half by Megalomagna like a hot knife through butter.

Korvac, determined to contribute, attacks another goblin assistant with his morning star. He has a THAC0 of 17, so he needs to roll a 9 to hit. Rolling a 10, Korvac connects, dealing 1d8 damage. Korvac rolls a 6, killing the goblin with a blunt strike to the head.

The remaining goblin assistant in the front retaliates, targeting Donovan. With a THAC0 of 20, it needs a 16 to hit since Donovan’s AC is 4. Rolling a 15, the goblin assistant misses by an inch.

Another goblin assistant reaches for Bosco. The thief’s AC is 4, so the goblin needs a 16 to hit. Rolling a 12, the goblin assistant hits nothing but air.

The third goblin alive attacks Kharius: Rolling an 18, the goblin assistant hits Kharius. Dealing 1d6 damage, the goblin assistant rolls a 4. Kharius’s HP falls to 3, and he feels the blow.

The last remaining goblin assistant, unable to engage in melee combat, attacks with its slingshot, targeting Korvac. Rolling a 13, the goblin assistant’s pebble shot fails miserably. Grumpy, the goblin assistant throws a tantrum and will have a -2 penalty on its armor class the next time it is attacked.

----------------------------------------

Initiative roll (1d10)

* Bosco: 9+2=11

* Donovan Stride: 7

* Kharius Bloodmoon: 6

* Korvac the Blessed: 4

----------------------------------------

Bosco, nimble as ever, goes for another goblin assistant in melee. Rolling a 15, Bosco successfully hits the goblin assistant with his short sword, dealing 1d6 damage, Bosco rolls a 3. The goblin assistant is left with 1 HP, wounded and panting but still standing.

Following Bosco's lead, Donovan charges at a goblin assistant with Megalomagna. Rolling a 14, Donovan successfully hits. Dealing 1d8+5 damage, Donovan rolls a 6, inflicting 11 damage. The goblin assistant is cut down like a piece of paper.

Kharius, fighting through the pain but still cautious, keeps his distance and aims his bow at the goblin assistant cowering in the back. Rolling a 12, Kharius successfully hits the goblin assistant. Dealing 1d6 damage, Kharius rolls a 4. The goblin assistant cries in pain from the arrow to its knee and falls to the floor with a thump, dead.

Korvac, disgusted by the foul smell of goblin blood, attacks another goblin assistant with his morning star. Rolling a 9, Korvac successfully hits the goblin assistant. Dealing 1d8 damage, Korvac rolls a 3, inflicting 3 damage. The goblin assistant is left with 1 HP, staggering but still alive.

Before the goblins had the chance to react, Megalomagna’s blade shimmered a purple color. After a couple of seconds, the sword started to jape and jeer at the goblins in their own language. The Party could not understand what was being said, but it was easy to realize nothing but insults, taunts, mockery and derision was being thrown at the poor green monsters. The goblins quickly became infuriated and charged at Donovan.

“Careful, Donovan!”, Kharius shouted. “That was a Taunt spell!”.

“What?”, Donovan asked, but had no more time to chat, since the two remaining goblins were already lunging at him.

One of the remaining goblin assistants, enraged, attacks Donovan. Rolling a 16 (adjusted for the -2 penalty), the goblin misses, as Donovan skillfully parries the attack.

The second goblin assistant also targets Donovan, attempting to land a blow at the apparent utterer of insults. Rolling a 10 (adjusted for the -2 penalty), the goblin misses, as Donovan, vigilant and prepared, easily evades the attack.

Bosco engages one of the remaining goblin assistants in melee. Rolling a 13, Bosco successfully hits. Dealing 1d6 damage, Bosco rolls a 5. The goblin assistant dies immediately.

Donovan charges at the last remaining goblin assistant with Megalomagna. Rolling a 16, Donovan successfully hits. Dealing 1d8+5 damage, Donovan rolls a 7, inflicting 12 damage. The last goblin dies with an agonizing high-pitched scream.

"Did you seriously cast a Taunt spell?”, Donovan asked the sword Megalomagna.

“Yeah I did! How did you like that, huh? Pretty neat if you ask me. Those goblins were so pissed off, it was hilarious!”, Megalomagna said, chuckling.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

“So you think this is funny?”, Donovan retorted, irritated. “Those goblins came at me with so much bloodlust I thought they were going to eat my guts!”.

“Don’t be such a pussy”, Megalomagna said, causing Donovan’s eyes to open wide in surprise. “My spells are the best, and by taunting those stupid goblins I prevented them from attacking your weak party members and focus on you instead. You should be grateful!”.

“Aren’t you an arrogant piece of metal?”, Korvac asked. “If you would at least warn us that you’re going to cast a spell, we could at least prepare beforehand. What do you say?”.

“Hmpf. I will give it some thought, if I have the time. Now show me that map. I can read it better that any one of you”, Megalomagna said, and its blade gleamed brightly, indicating the use of a Light spell.

“A resourceful weapon, to say the least, uh”, Bosco said, nodding at their party members.

“Too good to be true, I’d say”, Kharius responded, skeptic.

Donovan stretched out the crude hand-drawn map.[https://imgur.com/SziJYkY]

“I don’t think we need a super intelligent sword to be able to read this”, Bosco said.

“Shut up, you midget!”, Megalomagna said harshly. “Can you read these goblin stupid letters? I suppose not. Then I'll tell you, but you’ll have to stay quiet. The most important thing this map shows is that the next room is the goblins’ living quarters, and after that is the throne room. Did you hear what I say? A THRONE ROOM. There’s a very big goblin here, and without me, you’re bound to become barbecue”.

“Yeah yeah, we get it”, Donovan interjected, annoyed. “You’re great, you’re awesome, we’re dead meat without you, now put the light down and let’s move. We will kill this big goblin you say and finish this quest before night. I’m getting hungry already”.

“And I’m the arrogant one, you say”, Megalomagna retorted. “Foolish human”. The sword cancelled its Light spell as the Party went on.

Following the map, they went through a corridor that led, as Megalomagna said, to the goblins’ living quarters. There were several hammocks in line, but in much greater quantity than the map suggests. No goblins could be found there, which was very suspicious.

“This might be a trap”, Kharius said, cautious as always. “Allow me to check for traps, then”, Bosco said, taking the lead.

----------------------------------------

Bosco checks for traps. His chances of detecting/disarming a trap are as follows:

* Find/Remove Traps – 5% per level (25%)

* Skill Racial Adjustment – Hobbit (+5%)

* Dexterity Bonus – 19 (+10%)

* Chances of disarming the trap: 40 out of 100

* Rolling 1d100: 28

----------------------------------------

Bosco finds a crossbow hidden in the wall containing a poisoned bolt. Carefully, Bosco removes the bolt from the crossbow and takes it off the wall without triggering the trap.

----------------------------------------

Bosco received 100 XP for disarming a trap. Bosco Tumblefoot has accumulated 1400 XP in total.

----------------------------------------

“Great job, little fella!”, Megalomagna shouted.

“Shhhhhh”, Korvac shushed. “Settle down, you crazy sword! There might be goblins in the vicinity!”.

“They’re not here. They’re waiting for you at the throne room. I can sense them”, Megalomagna said so pompously that it just sounded ridiculous.

“Whatever”, Donovan interrupted. “Let’s check these hammocks, there might be something worth our attention”.

----------------------------------------

Checking for valuables, the party gathers the following items:

* 1 vial containing an unknown red liquid.

* 1 vial containing an unknown green liquid.

* 1 arcane spell scroll – Kharius identifies it as a Magic Missile spell.

* 200 silvers.

----------------------------------------

“We should rest before going to the throne room”, Korvac said, breaking the silence.

“Isn’t it dangerous to sleep knowing that there are goblins expecting us?”, Donovan asked.

“You don’t have to worry, musclehead”, Megalomagna said. “I don’t need to sleep, so I’ll stand guard”.

“And why should we trust you, accursed sword?”, Kharius questioned.

“I owe you no explanations”, Megalomagna answered. “It’s on you: whether you rest and prepare for the next battle or not, it’s not my problem. I’m not the one who’s going to die”, the sword said, chuckling.

The Party members looked at each other, shrugged, and lay down in the hammocks.

“Wake up, everyoooooone! You useless slackers! I'm tired of waiting here; there are a dozen goblins behind that door, and here you are lying around for hours! ENOOOUGH!”, Megalomagna yelled.

The members of the Party rubbed their eyes and abruptly got up.

“Is everyone okay?”, Donovan asked. They all nodded. “Good. Let's go; the final battle awaits. And as for you, Megalomagna, I heard what you said. Show some respect to your Party, understand? Unless you’re down for a reforging”.

“Oooh, I’m being threatened. But it’s alright, warrior. Once you see what's behind that door, we'll see if you still want to throw me into a furnace. Just don't say I didn't warn you!”, Megalomagna retorted.

The members of the Party exchanged glances and headed toward the door. It was a massive door, making the adventurers wonder why it was so wide when the goblins were so small.

“Okay, are you ready?”, Donovan asked. “Once I open this door, I'll stay at the entrance to prevent the goblins from reaching you. But don't abuse my protection; I'm flesh and blood too!”.

Donovan then proceeded to open the enormous door with his exceptional strength. What he saw startled him: several goblins were ready with slings, while goblin assistants stood behind them with short swords in hand.

But the truly frightening figure was seated on the throne.

The throne was, in fact, a huge but old chair that could barely withstand the monster's weight. It was a giant Hobgoblin, with dark red skin and large fangs, wielding a halberd in his right hand. The polearm had a formidable blade that sent shivers down the Party members' spines. Upon seeing the adventurers, the Hobgoblin stood up and shouted:

"Humans! Ready to die? I hope so, hahahaha! Kill them, minions!".

The goblins then roared and prepared to attack.

“That was amazing! Really outstanding, pal. You reminded me of Alistair McDonnell, who bravely and boldly charged towards an army of bugbears with me in hand during the battle of the Forgotten Maze! Of course, he failed to see the gelatinous cube right in front of him, so he got absorbed by the cube, went paralyzed and the bugbears made short work of him. And I got absorbed by the cube as well! Talk about stupid. To make matters worse, the bugbears weren’t smart enough to realize what a legendary weapon I am, so they did what? THEY SOLD ME. AGAIN. Man, I hate money. What’s in it that makes people so greedy?”.

“You just can’t stop blabbering, can you?”, Donovan asked Megalomagna.

"I think we should cut the sword some slack", Korvac said. "It saved us with that last spell".

"And what a gruesome spell it was", Bosco said. "Did you see the state the goblins were left in?".

"It was an illusion", Kharius remarked. "But it was such a realistic illusion that the monsters couldn't discern between the real and the illusory, and this dreadful spell has the characteristic of causing real death to those unfortunate enough to be caught in it".

"Yes, yes, I am dreadful", Megalomagna said. "And this is not the first time I've made my enemies agonize like this. It was their own fault for messing with me! I am Megalomagna! Everyone owes me admiration and servitude!".

"Let's go back", Donovan said, ignoring the sword. "We've got what we wanted here, despite the scare we got from that Hobgoblin. The wizard will pay for not warning us about such a strong monster in the dungeon!".

***

“Welcome back, adventurers!”, the wizard said. “By the looks of it, you’ve had a great time in the goblins den. You even look stronger!”.

“We are definitely stronger, wizard”, Donovan replied. “And part of that is because we had to battle a fearsome Hobgoblin, armed with a fearsome polearm”, he said, swinging the halberd.

“Oh…that…I’m sorry, hehehe”, the wizard said, embarrassed. “If I had told you the whole truth, you probably wouldn’t accept the quest. It was too cheap a quest for an experienced party, you see”.

“And too dangerous for a novice party, you see?”, Megalomagna interjected.

“Where did that voice come from?”, the wizard asked, intrigued.

“Oh, it’s the sword. It’s a real handful, this one. It talks more than all Party members combined”, Donovan said.

“You found a talking sword?”, the wizard asked, perplexed.

“Not just a ‘talking sword’, feeble wizard. An ‘intelligent’ one. Know your stuff before you go cataloging everything”, Megalomagna admonished.

“Now that’s a fascinating discovery! How much for that piece?”, the wizard asked, his eyes shining with greed.

“Sorry, wizard. This one’s not for sale”, Donovan retorted. “It’s my weapon now, and I intend to keep it. Now here’s your wedding ring”.

“Okay…”, the wizard sighed. “Thank you for finding my wedding ring. My wife was about to kill me already! Here’s your payment…100 gold. I’m also interested in buying the Hobgoblin’s halberd and plate armor, and that ruby you’ve found, for 550 gold total. What do you say? As a token of my gratitude, I’ll also identify those potions of yours”.

Donovan exchanged glances with everyone to make sure they were in agreement. No complaints being raised from the Party members, they accepted the wizard’s deal.

“The vials with red liquid are healing potions, and the green one is poison”, the wizard declared. “Glad you didn’t drink the green one, huh?”, and he laughed a typical grandpa laugh.
