12 - Signs

I tried not think about that person stabbing their hand into the mech and pulling out a mana crystal. However I failed... It was impossible not to. Especially as I had a giant stack of the things right next to me, now useless as I mainly use the batteries I made now. If the military stopped sending mechs after them would they find their way in here beat me up so they could eat these ones?

I thought about making a bunch of of my old robots just so I didn't have them in here with me anymore... But that might provoke them into attacking me directly... Well, it's better like this because if they do break in to get at the crystals I'll know exactly where they're headed. In the end it was safest to just leave them in a pile, it's not like they were explosive like the blue goo batteries so there wasn't really an issue with it.

I still wanted to keep an eye on them so I made sure have my drones patrol around them, not going directly at them but if they were seen leaving their little spot in the forest I'd spot it on at least one drone. Then the paths of the drones would shift so they didn't get destroyed this time. Of course I made sure to link my drones into my new fire control system for the turrets. If the drones detected that person my turrets would swivel to aim that direction so they'd have less time to fire if they decided to approach.

But somehow, that person managed to get out of the ring of drones undetected. Suddenly appearing at the edge of my drone paths that up a sheer cliff face. The cliff was bare and I could only guess it had something to do with the disappearing abilities I saw.

Well, as long as they aren't bothering me I guess it's fine... no idea why they're still hanging around though. Of course I had to deal with the military sweeping the woods and removing all four ruined mechs with their dead pilots... Their bodies showed no sign of being eaten so maybe they weren't a monster? But I remember the sight of them directly comping down on a mana crystal. My machine brain had added a satisfying potato chip crunch to the video as it shattered between their teeth.

I tried not to think about it, they were just too powerful for me to do anything other than sit here next to this pile of bait with a cannon ready for them.

I couldn't keep Cameron in space forever, strictly speaking it wasn't his job. His contract was for robot maintenance and overseeing construction of the resort. So when he finished the fighter I called him back. Coalition to the ship and I lost sight of it as they determined if they did want this new fighter.

Coming down from space was a lot easier than getting up. Within a few days he was back and trying to flirt with his boss again. I think she was starting to like him actually, in that pathetic dog kind of way.

She still gave him a list of basic tasks that got him out of her office. Things like fixing a window that had gotten stuck, a machine in the gym broke down, and a broken floor tile from where two guys got into a drunken fight. But it was his job so he couldn't complain.

That was basically the schedule for the next for weeks. I wished I could do more research so I just started working on my own upgrades. My motors upgraded into magical ones. It went quickly, and a quick flex of my hand revealed that while they didn't provide more power they were certainly were much smoother. I was looking at what I needed to upgrade my sensors now too. Being able to see the surface of other planets and possible find the ores available would help a lot with deciding where to go next.

For the most part I remained still next to the pile of crystals. Ship designing took up most of my time, but I had yet to hear back from the coalition. I wanted to start printing ships in orbit already.

Then the next incursion by the swarm happened. Sure enough they had brought the big ships this time. Two of those giant meat ship destroyers, with well a swarm of smaller ships. There was no blocking everything so it was revealed then to the public that there was an invasion underway. Of course, my workers wanted to run back to the city. I sent Cameron a message to settle down the ladies and assure them that everything is fine. I hadn't just been selling robots and sending materials into space. I had made a fleet of those same fighters I originally made at the first ground battle.

Of course if things got too intense at the defense I'd turn on the laser turrets. Closer range but it'd be like running into a wall as they essentially had an infinite fire rate so unless they had sufficient mass to counteract the flash heat they'd be vaporized instantly.

I was watching the news as cameras were pointed to the sky watching the battle in space. I saw on my sensors as the defenses were obviously winning in space but it was no where near enough to stop the ships from making planetfall. After this, well regardless of what the coalition say I'm going to start printing ships on my new space station. Which because it was actually now a critical location was heavily defended against the swarm. But the constant stream of meat ships dipping into the atmosphere was making me worried. It was way more then just a single ship like the last time, and there was only two destroyers.

Of course the two giant meat ships took a lot of firepower. In the end it looked like they killed one as it fell to the planet. But of course I wasn't going to take chances. Multiple ships ended up landing or crashed in multiple places across the world. I was mainly worried about this continent as there was a lot of empty places meaning the swarm could easily build up with no one knowing.

Luckily it was impossible to hide the mountain sized pile of meat as it crashed into the planet. I was more worried about the smaller ones making some nest that got missed.

However it was obvious it wasn't dead as it started spewing out monsters of meat and bone immediately. I hated this one, it was visible from my cameras it was so close. Of course a swarm destroyer landed right next to me. Luckily the other ended up staying orbit in orbit and didn't end up on the planet, that didn't stop it from spewing out smaller meat ships to harass the ships up there and come down to strike a particularly difficult position. I started constructing implosion cannons. Full sized ones as I could see the dark cloud that was forming above the new mountain. It was a swarm of flying creatures that would rip flesh from bone easily. Luckily I had planned for some implosion cannons on the roof of the resort. It would just have less of a relaxing feel to the resort.

However the clients were assured when they saw the construction dogs jump into action as a new construction was added onto the building. It would be a few days for them to be constructed. I wanted to wince as a ship crashed into a camp that was set up. No doubt everyone in that camp was now dead. I pushed a factory into making some handheld weapons just incase. Oh and some armor as well... Then I gave them to Cameron to distribute as he saw fit.

It wasn't yet at a critical situation where I would open the shelter I had built but I stopped ordering food and used what was being grown instead. I sent a report to the government that would let them know my resort could be used as a shelter if an evacuation was needed. Then the cloud of swarming beasts started swooping in. Everyone was already inside but were shocked when all windows were suddenly locked down with heavy shutters that were hidden. Of course I turned off the cameras in the gym instead using the monitors to show something else. No idea what to put there so I just put 'Please wait' for now.

Yeah, my gun turrets were already being overwhelmed so I turned on the laser turrets. Very quickly the air darkened with ash from the vaporized bats. Up close they were even worse to look at. The bat like wings with pink semi translucent skin made it seem even more gross somehow. The swarm of them was never ending. Luckily the lasers were also never-ending. I turned the gun turrets to shoot at ground targets that were still equally swarming but were less numerus because of the space they took up.

Of course Cameron wanted to see so he hacked into a monitor and put a camera feed of the outside. He saw the flashing lights of the turrets keeping the swarm firmly outside the walls. He didn't look surprised at the lasers but he did look impressed at the enemy numbers.

This resort was taking the full brunt of the attack from the destroyer. I could tell the laser turrets were straining my power network so it wouldn't hold indefinitely but once the implosion cannons were up the area of effect they had would help a lot. Not to mention the range. I could directly shell the mountain of meat from here if I wanted, which I very much did.

It took two days for the turrets to be finished. Occasionally a turret would overheat and a few bats would make it through but end up being killed by a construction robot. So when the bots came in to Cameron's maintenance room they were covered in ash blood and other things. He was showing off his camera feed to his boss who practically screamed at the robots bloody state.

She ran out of the room only to trip as the whole building shook. That was the implosion cannon's firing. The effect it had on the swarm actually did impress Cameron this time. I saw his raised eyebrow as he watched after the first few shots the swarm was pushed back. The laser turrets obviously firing less and less. Then stopping entirely before the gun turrets slowly stopped as well. However the building continued to shake as the cannons didn't stop firing.

Implosion cannons had timed shells. They would fire and the shell would explode at the time programmed into it. Of course the time was set automatically. I turned the monitors in the gym back on, but instead of showing the feed of the outside they usually showed instead they showed a the image of the roof and the intimidating cannon firing shell after shell. That way the people inside wouldn't be worried about why the building was shaking. It was us winning not the enemies winning.

However despite getting the worst of the assault the other camps that were in the way ended up collapsing under the mass of forces from the smaller ships. Mechs with shotguns were moved to intercept the swarms they help well but ended up having to back off for ammo issues.

This was the third day of fighting on the planet, the destroyer in orbit finally was killed so there was no more heavy airstrikes from a ship crashing into its target filled with acid moving at orbital speeds. I got lucky there, it seemed there might have been some kind of logic behind the bombings. Because I was dealing with absurd numbers and heavy forces of the destroyer on the planet none of those orbital strikes were aimed at me.

However my hope at shelling the mountain directly was crushed when heavy units replaced the swarm units that initially rushed at me. While not as effective at keeping the big heavy armored walking death spiders of bone plated meat the implosion cannons still packed a punch, especially if the shells were timed to explode inside the enemy.

There is no war crimes here, it's all about survival. But the pushback effect of my cannons effectively stopped progress on both sides. The heavy armor gave just enough time for another to replace them before my turrets could move on to the next.

I was now directly competing in an arms race with them. Except one hand was tied behind my back to remain hidden. I saw a storm forming overhead, seems the weather was providing some cover for me. I did a quick upgrade to my armor. I haven't actually tested the effectiveness of my own weapons yet, so I might as well. Especially since I didn't have to worry about some satellite in orbit snapping my likeness to give the coalition to come shut me down.

I was just about to start moving when I hear a voice, right next to me... It, no she spoke with an uncaring tone. It was that monster that could punch holes in armor and ate rock hard mana crystals! "You're heading out there then?" Of course she said that as she chomped down on a crystal.
