Chapter 7 - New Neighbors

New Neighbors:

In a blink of an eye, more than a month passed away. After Mai had moved next door, my life felt as if it was just too short. I couldn't believe that in six months; I would graduate from the elementary school.

It was a weird feeling; one I never thought that I would have. Ever since I could remember, I always wanted to grow up faster just so that I can do things I wasn't allowed to do now. But, now I was counting my days. Although I know that graduating wouldn't change anything between us, we would no longer be able to spend so much time together.

These days, Mai would often spend the night in my house. After Christmas, our families became a lot closer, and somehow Granny began to see me in a new light. I didn't understand it at first but later mom told me that she informed granny about the incident of me finding out about Mai's wish.

I was embarrassed but also relieved. I wasn't yet confident in my abilities to protect Mai. It was regrettable, but for now, I was happy that there were others who cared for her. Granny being Mai's only family truly did love her a lot, and mom told me that Granny was at ease that I was taking care of Mai.

I was selfish, yes but I wasn't selfish enough to think that only I should love and care for Mai. I was only selfish when it came to whom Mai liked.

Today was a Sunday, and both of us were curiously watching the movers move furniture into the apartment next door. I could still remember the day Mai and granny moved in, then, I didn't even spare her a glance, but after just six months, we were now inseparable. Who would have guessed such an outcome? Time is a funny thing.

Finally, our curiosity was answered; two twins walked in from the elevator holding the hands of a good looking lady. They were about Mai's age or maybe a little bit older, and they were cute. I smiled reflexively thinking that Mai now had two girls to play with, but my smile froze midway as the thought of the consequences of such a fate.

Mai might start spending more and more time with these girls and might eventually start ignoring me just like others. But, my interest was piqued as I heard their names, Kai and Rin.

Wait! Kai, isn't that a boy's name? Don't tell me there can be such a cute looking boy. The lady finally noticed us standing a little distance away and pushed the twins to introduce themselves. This woman was sure tough on her children.

But, the twins didn't seem to mind and came forward to introduce themselves.

“Kai,” the boy said a single word and remained silent.

The girl, however, didn't seem to care about her brother and cheerfully introduced herself, “Hi! My name is Rin, and this is my little brother Kai. We are going to attend East Elementary school, and we're both in fourth grade.” She concluded with a smile.

“Stupid, since we're twins, we'll both be in the same grade. Why do you have to say such a stupid thing? You're making me look stupid,” Kai cursed under his teeth, but all of us could hear him.

Rin glanced at her brother, and the smile faded away from her face. I saw her real character that instant as she smacked Kai's head without hesitation. Mai looked shocked, and even I stared dumbfounded by her sudden eruption.

“You dare call your sis stupid! It looks like, you haven't learned your lessons yet. Should I teach you manners again?” She shouted in anger.

Kai's eyes turned red; he was struggling to hold back his tears, but soon lost it and started crying and then ran away to his house shouting, “Mom! Rin hit me.”

Rin face once again turned cheerful as she took Mai's hand and asked in a happy voice, “Waah! You're so cute, just like a doll. What is your name?”

“Mai,” Mai replied in a small voice. She looked confused and afraid, and her hold on my sleeve tightened. I glanced at the Mai. I could understand her hesitance, but I didn't see a need to be careful around Rin.

As a bully myself, I could tell that Rin wasn't a professional bully. She was just a big sister, and that was a good thing. A plan began to form in my head; I was in fifth grade and will graduate in six months, but the twins were in fourth grade so they can look after Mai in my absence.

So I introduced myself, “Hello, this is Mai, she is in third grade, and I am Grey, I'm in fifth grade. We too attend the East Elementary school.”

Rin nodded her head; she looked like she wanted to talk to Mai more, but seeing that Mai was shy, she didn't force it. But, her eyes darted to Mai's hand which caught my sleeve and then she studied me for a long moment suddenly interested by my presence.

“Hello Grey,” she greeted and extended her hand. And, I smiled in return.

Mai only stood there in confusion waiting for me as I shook hands with Rin. I rarely greeted anyone, and Mai might not understand the reason behind my actions, but she would one day know that everything was for her.
