Chapter 2 - Her Most Important person
Mai always looked at me as if I was a living god. Since the classes hadn't started yet, I always invited her to mine or played over at her house. The PSP somehow became a secondary thing; nowadays I looked forward to meeting Mai. I used to play PSP for fun; now somehow I started playing it to make her worship me more. Not only that, I even took out my notebook and wrote down the controls for the game so that she can understand them.
But, soon I noticed that Mai was different. Unlike the boys in my class, she didn't pick up the controls quickly. I thought it would be easy but even after the third day, she still made mistakes, and somehow it irritated me. I wanted to scold her, but her puppy eyes made me swallow my words.
Finally, I decided to ask my grandpa, and he told me that girls are slow at some things, but they're fast at many others. So I should always be patient with girls. Understanding the reason, I somehow felt better. So it wasn't my fault, Mai was slow at games because she was a girl. And, grandpa did tell me that I have to be patient with her else I'm not a man.
Remembering the fact that a man had to be patient, I diligently taught her for the next two weeks. Mai didn't lose interest in games as grandpa warned, he said that girls didn't like games and may lose interest after some time but I shouldn't blame her because she was a girl.
I was ready to face her even if she lost interest as I still had many other things to teach her but instead, she became even more competitive. Of course, I could beat her with closed eyes, but sometimes I let her win. I don't know why but I liked her smile when she was happy.
One more week passed and the classes started. Since Mai was a new student, the class teacher introduced her to the whole class. I was somewhat nervous because Mai was shy so I decided to visit her class.
As the senior most student and the school bully, everyone gave way to me as I strode forward to her class. Once inside, I found Mai surrounded by boys and girls and anger sparked in my heart. How dare they bully her? I stormed forward to protect her but found her smiling as curious classmates surrounded her.
She wasn't being bullied. So I stopped in my tracks and stood still like a statue. Mai found me, and so did several others. My reputation was so legendary that practically every student in the school had heard about me.
Some told that I broke the benches in second grade, and I wrecked the whole school in third grade, and I made a slave out of a teacher in fourth grade. That I smoked a pack of cigarettes in one sitting and that I had a hundred followers and that I had a dozen girls by my side.

Since I never cared about my reputation, I never tried to clarify those rumors, but suddenly a fear sprang in my heart. What if Mai believed these people and distanced herself from me? I had to tell her everything before these people can but before I could utter a word, Mai rose from her seat and walked to by side. She hugged my hand and asked, “Ge, what're you doing here?”
(Ge - means elder brother in Chinese. It isn't just used for blood-related siblings but also used to call an older love interest or a person who promised to protect her like a brother. I love this way of calling. So please bear with me for the rest of the series.)
The others stared at me in shock. Ge, what Ge? Mai never called me Ge. She always called me Grey. Why now? Was she distancing herself from me? Was she telling others that she only knows me because I'm somehow her brother?
I looked at her pained by her words but her sparkling eyes filled with admiration erased all my pain. Wait! She called me her Ge. She was telling others that I was important to her. Of course, I was important than others; I taught her so many things. I threw back my head and laughed in my heart.
Maybe because she sensed that I was happy, Mai hugged me even more and introduced me to her new classmates. When they heard my name, some trembled while others gulped in fear. By the looks of it, Mai may not have heard anything about me, but the way she introduced me made even me feel as though it was a little overboard.
She called me the most amazing person ever, most caring, and the most loving person on earth. Some gawked, and some stared at us with their mouths wide open shocked by her words. But, I looked at her and decided then and there.
I am selfish; I'm selfish in all things, and I'll be selfish with Mai. I should be her most important person, and I'll be her only important person. I looked at everyone with a cold gaze, and when my eyes passed over the boys, even I felt that my stare could kill them a hundred times over.
Some felt the chill while others clearly saw my intentions. Satisfied with their reactions, I patted Mai’s head and said, “Take care of Mai. If something happens to her, I'll be here before you know it.”
