A stranger's visit

A stranger's visit

It is yet another lonesome evening for Lucinda. She glanced up and gazed at the stunning night sky. The beauty of the stars helped her endure her sadness a little. "I'm not so alone" She says, to ease herself and to forget that she is all alone. It has been two centuries of pure sorrow for her; ever since the war, she has lost everything. She lost her family, her kingdom, her warband, and her humanity.

If she ever encountered the witch who transformed her from a kind and gentle woman into a creature of the night and a bloodthirsty monster, she will show no remorse in slaughtering her even if it means she will bathe in the witch's blood. The witch wounded her soul and gave her inner torment. She glanced at the town far away from her castle. Everyone seemed so joyful this evening, but she cannot join them since she is a being who thirsts for blood.

Even the happiness of others can no longer light up her face. She can only leave the castle during the night to purchase fresh meat but she would have to wear a dark hood to cover herself and to not reveal her identity. Her facial expression has been the same for over two hundred years now. Only one word can describe it, dead. But it seems she already has enough supplies to last for a week. She will just stay and gaze at the wonderful night sky.

In Târgoviște, the capital of Wallachia, there is a boy named Stefan. Stefan isn't very lucky since he was disowned by his parents. He roamed the streets ever since he was nine. Now, he is seventeen and still roamed the streets as no one trusted him. Tonight, Stefan is starving and planned to steal food but was caught by the guards. They chased Stefan until they reached the forest. The guards lost track of Stefan and just decided to return to Târgoviște. Stefan was hiding behind a tree, but it eventually got darker. It got so dark that he got lost in the woods and could not find his way back to the town. He decided to sleep under a tree tonight. He just hopes nothing will try to hurt him while he rests.

The next day Stefan woke up and his hunger still wasn't gone since he failed to steal food. He searched the woods to find anything he can consume and help ease his hunger even just for a bit. He found an apple tree, and it already had many succulent apples. This can help ease his feeling of hunger for some time. He ate 2 apples and went on his way to find the path back to the town.

After hours of searching, he failed to find his way back. It was already getting dark again, and as he walked furthermore, he saw an old abandoned castle in the distance. He found it uncanny since it was old and the walls were starting to crumble. Stefan decided to step inside since it was beginning to get very dark. He settled and explored the big abandoned castle. Suddenly, he heard a noise from the cellar. He does not want to go but he gathered all of his courage and decided to check what caused the noise. He quietly walked down the cellar and he saw light on his way down.

He finally reached the last step then suddenly, he saw something that made him startle. There was someone in the castle and he observed who it was. It's a woman! He looks at the woman from behind the walls of the steps leading down the cellar. Stefan looks at the woman very carefully. He saw that the woman was very beautiful. She has dark hair, pale skin, beautiful eyes with red irises, she wore a dark style of clothing.

Stefan's heart is beating very fast because the woman is very mesmerizing. Suddenly, the woman glances at Stefan's direction and in an instant, she sprints so fast that Stefan did not even have time to react. At that moment they were face to face, and the woman revealed her fangs to strike fear into Stefan's heart. It worked since he ran upstairs very quickly that he did not even dare to look back. But the woman caught up to Stefan and pinned him to the ground.

"Who are you?!" The woman said, and she still continued to scare him with her fangs. "Please! Don't hurt me! My name is Stefan!" He said. "I just wanted a place to stay for the night!" He says. She stopped, then asked, "Your name is Stefan?" and he nods to her question.

The woman helps her stand up and Stefan is still shivering from fear. Stefan then spoke with a trembling voice, "My name is Stefan and...What are you? What's your name?". The woman responded, "My name is Lucinda Noptescu, and according to what you saw, shouldn't you already know what I am?". Stefan realizes that Lucinda is a vampire and spoke, "Lucinda... Please, don't hurt me. I was just trying to find shelter. I'm starving and tired. Please, don't kill me."

Lucinda looked at him with tears forming in his eyes. Lucinda speaks, "No! I'm sorry, I won't hurt you okay? It's just that, your name is Stefan and you look exactly like my late husband, and his name was also Stefan."

Stefan was visibly baffled by Lucinda's words. How could he look anything like her late husband?

During the year one thousand two hundred fifty, two hundred years ago when Lucinda's kingdom named Noapte had fallen. The Hungarians declared war upon them, and the kingdom of Noapte assembled all their infantrymen to prepare for battle. Lucinda and her husband's kingdom was the very last kingdom to siege.

Both Lucinda and Stefan fought against the Hungarian forces to prevent them from conquering their kingdom. But in the end, they failed to protect their kingdom and Stefan was struck by multiple arrows. He was pierced on his right arm, left leg, and his heart. As Stefan was slowly dying while he was on his wife's lap, and Lucinda could no longer hold back her tears. His final words were, "Do not cry my love, for this is not our end. I will come back and look for you. I promise you that. I love you."

Stefan died and Lucinda's life lost its meaning. After the war she hid inside the woods where she met an old lady. Lucinda was offered a gift and she accepted it. The old lady said, "I can help you dear, I can make the pain go away. Trust me."

Little did Lucinda know that she was about to be deceived by this old woman who turns out to be a witch. She transformed into a vampire. Her skin turned pale, her irises turned red, and she grew fangs. She hated herself after her transformation. She headed back to her castle which was now under control of the Hungarians. Lucinda had to look for shelter she could stay in for a while. She finds a small cave where she stayed.

After a few days the Hungarians eventually fled her castle since they did not see it being of much use to them. Lucinda saw the infantrymen leaving her castle and took this opportunity to stay there once again. Before the war began, she hid every treasure in a secret room. If her kingdom ever experienced defeat, the infantrymen could not find them. She also kept the pictures of her and her husband hidden and safe. These are all she has left in memory of Stefan.

Now, as she remembers Stefan's words, is this boy really her late husband who has returned?
