Doccia was kind enough to tell me where the caravan was headed: towards a place called an Elliptical Point. In such a place, an entity called a Satellite would arrive to take people away into the stars. After that, they would be reborn in a place called Earth.
“Hey, Doccia?”
“Hm?”
“How far away is this Elliptical Point place?”
“Well, without our antennas we can’t use the Nebula to know for sure...but I heard someone say we’ll be walking for at least another week.”
“Hmm...and how far away is Earth after that??”
“I don’t know, but it’s definitely a long way. If you look up on a clear night, you can see it in the sky as a little blue dot. Our Satellites have to work together with Earth Satellites just to get us there.”
“Wow...that sounds like a lot of effort.”
“Mm-hm.”
“Is going to Earth really worth it...?”
“I hope so...everyone makes it sound so nice in the stories. For one thing, there’s no Ordered World there— everyone just lives wherever, and no one has to work for anyone if they don’t want to. You can goof off all day with no consequences!”

“That does sound nice...I guess. I don’t really remember what the Ordered World is like, so it’s not like I have a frame of reference...”
“Well, take my experience, for instance: I got thrown out just because I messed up the stitches on my Noble’s dress! And it was only my second assignment, too…”
“Well, that’s not very nice...”
“I know, right?? Nobles are awful; they don’t care anything about us...they come all the way here from Earth just to have a chance to bully us around…!”
“Nobles are from Earth?”
“Yep: Our Lord Syzygy specially invites them here, one by one. Apparently they’re all lining up for a chance to live on Mars...”
“And all the people born here on Mars want a chance to live on Earth...”
“Heh! Yeah...it’s ironic.”
“...Do you think...would you really rather run away to Earth? Or would you rather just have Mars be a nicer place to live? For...us?”
“...I don’t know. I guess...I’m only a few years old, so it doesn’t matter that much to me. I just want to be happy somewhere.”
“Happy somewhere…”
“Yeah!”
“...That sounds good. I think I’d like that, too.”
