After claiming salvage rights on this base things moved fast. First off was repairs, I managed to pay for them by selling off some of the weapons and armor that was stored here by the previous occupants. I won't need most of them personally anyway.
Next was the ship itself. According to the registration office it's called a Kodiak. It's a lightly armored dropship with light shields and no weapons. It's unfortunate but I can work with it, just need to hire a pilot I can trust to fly it when it's fixed.
As the constant crew gets to work clearing rubble and dismantle damaged walls and ripping out locked up security systems I pull out my data slate and begin posting job openings for the various positions as security, maintenance, and ship crew.
Once all that is set up the days start blending together. Multiple interviews and criminal records checks, most not to my requirements, as well as a close eye on galactic news network means my days are too full for me to regularly do what I need around the house. Thankfully father is understanding in that regard.
Suddenly I'm awoken from my thoughts by a notification on my slate. Another interview with a trio of humans. At least it'll be entertaining even if they don't pass.
I get up and let them into my office and once they are seated I immediately begin the interview.
"Hello. I am Arcadia. I'll be your interviewer. What should I call you three?" I ask with a polite tone.
Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit.
The first and largest speaks up first. A rather imposing male with pale skin, shaved head, and bushy brown facial hair. "Hello miss. I go by Nick, and these two are my siblings." He gestures to the smallest one who is a similar skin tone but with ear length brown hair. "My brother Jason" then to the third, a female of slightly lighter skin tone with shoulder length blond hair "And my sister Ashley. It's a pleasure to meet you." He states with a warm tone.
With introductions done I get right to it. "So, Nick, what makes you qualified for this job?"
And he immensely responded. "Well you have a position for a small ship mechanic and I have the qualifications needed, I just can't get a job at any shipyard in town."
His response if nothing else is throwing up no red flags. Though it is a typical response at this point. "If we were to get boarded or attacked would you be able to fight them off?"
His answer is very quick. "Yes. Because they would be threatening not only me, but you and the others as well. And I won't let that happen."
I lean forward and think on that a moment. It was definitely a more passionate response. Perhaps it was an honest one as well. Might be some history there. I turn to Jason. "And what makes you qualified for the role?" I ask plainly.
He responds quickly and in a rather excited tone. "Well I was a fighter pilot in the Terran navy for 6 years. Went on no less then 30 combat missions against various enemies. Pirates, mercenaries, and hostile nations alike. I got ace early on and have 37 confirmed kills."
A combat pilot. Useful. "And would you be able to fight off any hostile boarders?" I ask.
He gives me a peculiar answer. One I didn't even consider. "No. During boarding the blast door between me and everyone else stays closed so the enemy can't seize control of the ship and crash it into a civilian target."
I sit there staring as I process his answer. It's a very intelligent answer. It makes sense, a lot of sense.
I look at Ashley lastly and notice the stack of actual paper documents before looking at her. "Seems I already have my answers then. All three of you will hear from me as soon as a background check comes through. But so far I like what I'm hearing and seeing in you all. You'll hear from me soon." And with that I get up and walk them out before heading back and sending their info to be run through criminal background systems. Of course I know almost immediately that all three are clean, and hired.
With that I head outside and help the construction crew with cleaning around the front gate. It's being rebuilt first.
